    You asked about elves. Vex and Vax are half-elves with an elven father and dead human mother. Keyleth is a half elf with different parents. Pike and Scanlan are gnomes (also long lived species, smaller than humans as shown...), Percy is human. Grog is a goliath in the game, they just refer to him as a half-giant in the show. Hope you enjoy the show. Like so many, the first few are just introductions, but when it gets rolling it really gets rolling!

    Yeah, "Half-Elves" are more like "mixed blood elves". At some point she has human ancestry from both sides of her family which is where her half-elf nature comes from. The twins are proper half-elves while Keyleth just has some human relatives a couple generations back@@ghurcbghurcb

    I saw someone post their classes and roles, but for some more nerdy breakdown. Vax'ildan Vessar - Half-elf Rogue -Voiced by Liam O'Brien Vex'ahlia - Half-elf Ranger - Voiced by Laura Bailey (The twins in game, and the show, good friends in real life who happen to share the same birthday) Grog Strongjaw - Goliath Barbarian - Voiced by Travis Willingham (Laura Bailey's Husband) Pike Trickfoot - Gnome Cleric - Voiced by Ashley Johnson Keyleth - Half-Elf Druid - Voiced by Marisha Ray Scanlan Shorthalt - Gnome Bard -Voiced by Sam Reigel NPCS Silas Briarwood - Voiced by Matthew Mercer (The DM, husband to Marisha Ray, who also cameos as several characters throughout the show, which makes sense as he was all of the NPCs in the game.) Delilah Briarwood - Voiced by Grey DeLisle Emperor Uriel Tal'Dorei - You guessed it, voiced by Khary Peyton, who played a guest character in the second campaign before this show came out. General Krieg - David Tennant Another neat note, the children in the village are played by the children of Liam O'Brien and Sam Riegel, who have been friends since high school.

    Welcome to the Critter family. Really enjoyed your observations and reactions. You caught most of the clues or question marks. Grog - Barbarian. Rage and damage reduction Pike - Cleric. Healer and holy support Vex - Ranger. Archer and animal companion. Can sense dragons. Vax - Rogue. Sneaky. Pick locks. Find traps. Throws daggers. Percy - creator of first gun. Special gunner class. Creates gadgets. Scanlan - Bard. Magic from song and performance. Keyleth - Druid. Magic from Nature. Wildshape.

    Small correction: I believe that Percy's class in DnD terms is Fighter, his subclass is Gunslinger. Not a big difference in terms of the show but thought I'd mention it

  • @AnxietyRat

    @AnxietyRat

    7 ай бұрын

    @@trollnystanyeah, Percy is, mechanically, a fighter in the actual campaign but he and Matt homebrewed a gunslinger class for Taliesin, Percy's actor, because a gunslinger class did not exist at that time... I think it does officially exist now but yeah, back when they ran the campaign a gunslinger class did NOT exist and so they had to homebrew it and tweak it as they went.

  • @trollnystan

    @trollnystan

    7 ай бұрын

    @@AnxietyRat @AnxietyRat They homebrewed a subclass, not a class. Artificer is the closest thing to an official class that has to do with explosive projectiles, and even then you have to pick the subclass Artillerist to get a cannon or use the optional rule to give them firearm proficiency. Gunslinger is still considered a homebrew SUBclass to Fighter. Source: going through all the official and Critical Role DnD books.

  • @AnxietyRat

    @@trollnystan yeah, I misspoke I meant they homebrewed a new subclass of fighter. But I wasn't sure if the gunslinger had been made into a class of its own in the official D&D or not ...I guess it hasn't... Guns are definitely a thing in some settings so maybe that's what confused me. 🤷‍♀️ Cool though. good to know this information. The rest of what I said still stands.

    You have no idea what you've started. If you enjoyed the first two episodes, you will dig the entire show. The kids were voiced by Vax's daughter and Scanlan's son. New people discover Critical Role all the time; Critters are well-practiced in avoiding spoilers.

    Yes that is indeed Khary Payton as the sovereign, he's a friend of the shows' cast so when they were seeking a kingly voice they knew where to go. In their other series/campaign he actually made his own character and joined them at the dnd table for a short time as a guest, which we will hopefully see in the animated adaptation which is in production.

    Grog is a "Goliath", one of the playable fantasy races in D&D. However, since this show takes great pains not to use any terms or names that are _specific_ to D&D (whether copyrighted or not), he is referred to as a "half-giant" in _TLoVM._ Keyleth, Vex'ahlia, and Vax'ildan are all half-elves. Pike and Scanlan are gnomes. And Percy is a 100% purebred Angsty Anime Boi. 😁 Oh, and by using the interjection "Respectfully" you have already endeared yourself to Critters everywhere. 😉

    I don’t know how much you know about critical role and d&d, but The Legend of Vox Machina started as a d&d campaign, the players are a group known as Critical Role. They started live-streaming their game sessions and grew a fan base. The show started as a kickstarter that raised 11 million. Prime Video saw potential in it and gave them a place to premiere the show, while allowing them to keep full control of the story. A cool thing to note, the original voice actors from the campaign also voice their characters in the show. You should take a look at the cast at some point, you may recognize a few of them, like Ashley Johnson (the voice of Pike in Vox Machina, and the voice of Ellie from Last of Us)

Bahaha! I snorted my drink, because that's a running joke from a *different * DnD liveplay show. I'm wondering if you've watched some Dimension 20 and were referencing it, or just accidentally quoted one of the players :) Either way, it made me laugh. (D20 is similar to Critical Role which this show is based on. Various DnD campaigns played in front of the camera. Both shows are a lot of fun :) D20 aren't in competition with CR, in fact there's a lot of friendship and collaboration between the two groups, with some players appearing in games at both tables.) [/waffling ] ANYWAY, sorry for the tangent, the question just made laugh and wonder if it was a deliberate reference :) Great reaction, great questions! I don't think anyone has explained this in the comments but Keyleth panicked when they first fought the dragon because dragons have a skill I think it's called like frightening roar or something... And so Keyleth got frightened and physically couldn't do anything in that moment and had to be kind of shaken out of it. So yeah, she got the condition of Frightened and couldn't do anything for her turn.... so they had her freeze while everyone else was attacking to kind of show that D&D mechanic in this visual medium.

    @@AishaWilson yeah, there's been some reacters who are like come on "keyless just pushed through it!" but it's a D&D mechanic you can't just push through... you roll your dice well against the effect... If you roll too low you're still effected. It wasn't necessarily her just being a scaredy cat coward ...it was like a mechanic in the game that honestly frequently happened to her and the others. Except not grog, because grog is immune to frighten when hes raging. But yeah, I totally agree that even if it wasn't a D&D mechanic... keyleth was absolutely valid to be absolutely terrified because they were NOT going to win that fight against the dragon.... That was pretty clear from the get-go. Lmao. I would be pretty scared too!

    YO. I'm very interested to see your reactions. Been watching idk... since wandavision? maybe before? This show is an animated reimagining (sticks mostly pretty close) to a D&D campaign from the channel Critical Role. Be prepared for the critter hug of death hahaha (critter = CR fans). And we genuinely love to welcome people to the community. So, in advance: Welcome! Idk if people in your patreon or whatever have recommended or given the lowdown, but in case not... it's based on their first campaign (they are on their third now). It was funded on kickstarter within like 20 min and by the end broke records enough to make the news. I mean they broke all their initial stretch goals before their official online launch announcement that evening. They asked for 750k to make a little miniseries and made almost 11.4 million by the end of the month. They only went to kickstarter bc no studios really "got" what they were bringing and they couldn't get it made. Then this happened and Amazon was like... hey so about that... S1 was successful enough they greenlit and funded S2 & 3. An adaptation for their second campaign (different main characters) is also currently in development (v. exciting) and they get first look at any other movies/series. Heyo. Nerds show up, especially if you rep the source well (or simply don't interfere with the creators haha). Anyway... I hope you have fun with the show! It's a wild ride with more depth and heart coming than you might expect on first meeting these bumblef*cks.

The incident does make it into this show, but not until season 2.)

    Yeah, Percy is on paper mechanically a fighter class. But Matt and Taliesin homebrewed a gunslinger class because the gunslinger class did not exist at the time.... I think there has been an official version of the gunslinger class released now but yeah when they ran their first campaign the gunslinger class did not exist so they had to homebrew it and tweak it as they went.... So he's technically a fighter with a subclass of homebrewed gunslinger.

    Hello! So... I confess, the following comment is a copy and paste of one I wrote quite a while back, have tweaked several times, and so now I fall back on it to give a Critical Role explanation. Yes, it's a bit longer than average, but... there's A LOT of stuff to cover, I summarized as best I could. Welcome to the world of Critters. Once upon a time, many years ago a talented voice actor was about to have a birthday, and to celebrate Matt Mercer, another well-established voice actor and talented GM (Game Master) offered to run a role-playing game for a group of friends... who also all happened to be voice actors. So, a group of nerdy ass voice actors sat around and played D & D. The group had so much fun they made it a regular thing, Felicia Day of 'Geek and Sundry' heard about this game and approached them with the idea of streaming it... and it became a hit in its field, eventually growing into its own company and channel known as Critical Role. Parting on good terms with their previous home, Felicia Day has a small role in the beginning of episode 2. Vox Machina was the group of characters they played in Campaign One, there has also been a Campaign Two, in which the cast plays a whole new group of adventurers. Both are set in the same world, but on different continents, and Campaign Two is set a few decades after the end of Campaign One. Each campaign ran for over a hundred episodes which are all over three hours long, and we are over 70 episodes into Campaign Three. They have also put out a bunch of other content, from talk shows to shorter games in other Role Playing worlds. They have played live shows to sold out theaters, become the number one channel on Twitch, have merch stores in multiple countries, have comics and actually published books of fan art (there are some talented as F*** Critters) they also started a nonprofit charity to... "Leave the World a Better Place." The whole cast would all tell you that they never expected any of this, that it has been a wild ride and they are just trying to hold on and be worthy of it. A few years ago they started looking into the possibility of an animation, but no one was buying, or at least not on their terms, so they went to the Critters to try and raise upwards of $700,000.00 over the course of 45 days in order to make a two-part special for themselves and their fans.... The Critters laughed, and smashed through not just the goal amount, but also ALL of their stretch goals within an hour. By day 45 they had raised nearly 11 and a half million dollars, added a bunch more stretch goals, and the two-part special became a season. Amazon took note and basically funded a second season (3rd season was green lit just before season 2 dropped) to get the streaming rights, but the show is created by Critical Role. Those Nerdy Ass Voice actors are the producers and have full creative control. Most of the people they hired, from writers to artists and composers are also fans who love and know the story and its world. It is one of the truest examples of a project of love I have ever seen. During the production of season one of the animation they put out a series of videos to keep their fans in the loop of how things were going. Interviewing the people behind the scenes and giving non spoiler info about the production. It's a good watch and will really help you understand the devotion and love that went into this project, as well as introduce the cast, the people who created these characters and this amazing story. Personally, how the lead composer got the job is one of my fav stories. Here is that play list. kzread.info/head/PL1tiwbzkOjQwJdoNetaNJE1zZVOE7xi8u The latest big news is that Amazon has signed off on producing a season based on the Campaign Two group, known as The Mighty Nein! And no I did not misspell Nein. They have also reached a multi year agreement that Amazon gets the first look at any new shows OR movies Critical Role wants to produce. Many a fans ears perked up at the mention of possible movies given the popularity of a particular 4 episode and done Campaign, “Exandria Unlimited Calamity” It is a separate adventure set in the same world, but way, WAY, before Vox Machina's or The Mighty Nein's Time. Once again, welcome to this new world, hope you enjoy your visit and stay for a while... it's a devoted community with a lot of heart... and dicks... so many dicks... LoL. Let Chaos Reign!
