The David Tennant interview for the show was so great: "I think it's fantastic. I think this is how all shows should be pitched. They should all start in somebody's front room and end up on television. Why not?" And as Matt Mercer said in regards to his performance: "Let. David. Tennant. Go. Full. Scottish. MORE." I got into CR shortly before the pandemic started, beginning with Campaign 2 and it kept me sane through much of it. Travis especially has been a huge inspiration for me and has led me to finally, after many years, playing my first real D&D game - we're still early into it but it's been a blast so far. Looking forward to the rest of your reactions!

Oh hell yeah! Bit of of a background info for those who don't know, this show exists thanks to one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in history. The initial goal was set to $750k … it got funded within 40 minutes of launch. 45 days and 88,887 backers later and they raised over $11M. Then 2020 happened so it got delayed a bit but we got there and I still can't quite believe it happened.

Paula, Calamity is Amazing!, it's way better than the first EXU, Brennan absolutely crushed it! I wouldn't necessarily watch it with Kat as it's got a lot of lore dump in it that might be overwhelming for a new Critter, but maybe not, she's probably used to nerdy technobabble from the copious sci fi she imbibes daily lol. I also think it'll hit much harder emotionally if you have C1 and C2 under your belt first (Which you do so Yay!) Could be a good reaction to do though if you want to, at least it's not Filled with spoilers like the other EXU stuff and some of the other Campaign related one shots.

Whooo! Continuing the trend of reaction channels I already love getting in on TLOVM. Since Paula's a Critter, I can't imagine this will be news, but just in case: Geek & Sundry aired a Doctor Who RPG campaign back in the day (featuring Amy Dallen as The Doctor) with guest appearances by Matt Mercer, Taliesin Jaffe and Darin De Paul. Very worth looking up for DW and actual-play enjoyers. (Taliesin's role is a particular favorite of mine, but then I admittedly appreciate him in basically anything.) All on KZread as "Eric's TBD RPG."

I had to chuckle at Katrina talking about saying "goodbye" for the first time to her character. Being an Old School D&D veteran (Basic, Expert, Advanced up to Edition 3.5 and Pathfinder (the unofficial Edition 3.75)) I can say that getting to the end of a campaign with your character is quite the accomplishment. It was rather routine to get killed every two sessions or so. Sometimes not lasting the night, sometimes making it three game sessions. Sure, some might get jaded and cynical but those of us who "get it" learned to put in the effort to make a complete character each and every time, even if you are rolling up your third character of the session.

  • @ryanbaillie11

    @ryanbaillie11

    2 жыл бұрын

As someone who currently runs old-school D&D (B/X and AD&D 2e), that's - uhh - quite the death count. I mean: that's a ridiculously high death count for a single player. Hell - that's a ridiculously high death count even if distributed over a group. Between having retainers between you and danger, monsters rolling morale, and monsters having reaction rolls: there's a lot baked in to old-school D&D that seperates a player character and death. Making it to the end of a campaign is still impressive - granted - but every player rolling up a new character every couple of sessions (never mind multiple _per_ session) is insane. All of the above can be negated by players making dumb decisions that get them killed, but unless the group is *brand new:* old-school D&D really isn't that much of a meat grinder. We just finished a Ravenloft campaign in B/X a few months back, and the party would see character deaths every 7-12 sessions. Still more than an average 5e game, but a far cry from your description above.

  • @chrisbullard5901

I always found D&D both fun if I could find a group that would play with creative thinking and problem solving skills, but mostly frustrating because most sessions broke down into two fat guys barking at each other about weapons proficiencies.

@@ryanbaillie11 Yeah, it seems a bit excessive. It reminds me of those d&d horror stories you read about where a sadist dm puts a bunch of new players through hell and tell them that's how d&d is supposed to go. Either that or the dm didn't know how to balance an encounter. Either way not a dm I'd want to play with.

Hoo boy, you guys are in for a ride. You've probably heard, while the first 2 episodes are decent, they are NOTHING compared to how things progress and ramp up once you hit the main season plotline at episode 3. Anyways, you guys know Critical Role, I'm preaching to the choir, haha. I'll have fun following your reactions! My advice? Don't space out the episode watching sessions to far apart. Also, imho watch them in 3 episode mini-binges (the way it was released) because that schedule seems deliberately paced to fit different cliffhanger points and so on. And otherwise, don't wait long between reaction sessions! Still having everything fresh on your mind as you go into each episode makes such a difference at several points! Have fun!

If not, it's a fan created project, where they took the musical Hamilton rearranged and retexted the songs to tell the story of Vox Machina (covers the arc after the Briarwood Arc) and it's very good. It's on KZread and it has excellent subtitles (which is sometimes helpful for telling who is singing at the moment).

I'll be honest - I'm not quite in love with the first couple of episodes? I know they were trying to establish this as an adult fantasy show and replicate the raunchy tone of the live stream sessions, but I sometimes wonder if they went a little too hard and alienated new viewers in the process. Later episodes I think balance the tone better, but if you're already in the know it's great fun right out the gate!

They had two episodes to catch people up on the game before they started streaming, establish the character personalities, and set up things that will be relevant later. That's not a whole lot of time. And from what I can tell, it's actually attracted a lot of new viewers BECAUSE they have a better understanding of things that those of us who were familiar with the group already knew. But I've heard PLENTY of people that never even heard of Critical Role get into it because of being introduced by this series.

@@captin3149 Critical Role definitely gained popularity for this series but I've spoken to many people non critters who stopped watching after the first episode. Reasons? Nudity violence and foul language for no reason other then for shock value. That's what I mean by hitting too hard to fast. Pull those things back a little. Don't remove them entirely but less of it especially in the first episode. Get them interested in the characters and the story. Then once hooked you can increase the intensity. I personally think they would've had even more people like the show had they done that.

Would you be able to react to Warehouse 13 please? I’ve never seen any channel react to any of it and it’s really good. It’s also a complete show with no spin offs, sequels or further content besides interviews with the actors and creators. It’s a live action sci-fi show with fantasy elements, it’s also a family show with a detective theme and fun historical references. Please, please, please do it. It would make my day, my month and my year. Either way I think you’re great and have been watching since you were on the other channel.

Actually, Kat? Go back to a podcast called "All Work, No Play" of Liam O'Brien and Sam Riegel, about the very first session of what is now the Vox Machina campaign. And fun fact, if not for Resident Evil 6, Critical Role wouldn't exist. Matt Mercer (Leon S. Kennedy), Laura Bailey (Helena), and Liam O'Brien (Voice Director) all worked on RE6 together, which is what led to Matt basically coming up with the idea of a one-shot D&D game for Liam's birthday. And now look at how far things have come, and how big things have gotten. It is amazing how much Critical Role loves the Critter community, and how much creativity is in the Critter community. If you want a taste of Critter talent, here is a short list of fan-based material, both compilations and original: The Mighty Nein, Love Makes People kzread.info/dash/bejne/n46H0sSwiKi-m7A.html Critical Demons kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIqeq5WuqbSpoMo.html What Journey, Megami (A CR Fan Song) kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXuastZxqrOwm9Y.html Comin' Are the Nein (A CR Fan Song) kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnaixKOoismomto.html Time For The Nein To Go, Lyv (A CR Fan Song) kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKpmwdyop7Wun7A.html Odds Are, Barenaked Ladies (A CR Fan Compilation) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYmis8qYZNHZqM4.html Edit: By the way, Kat, in D&D, there are several types and colors of dragons. Some, like the blue dragon, have a breath weapon based on an element: Blue = Lightning, Black = Poison, Red = Fire, White = Ice. Usually, when a dragon has an elemental breath weapon, that element actually heals them or they are immune to that type of damage -- hence the blue dragon being immune to lightning. Oh, and before I forget, dragons, being magical creatures, have the power to shapeshift into other forms -- including human.

Oh boy, if you haven't seen EXU Calamity, let me just say, as a massive critical role fan and the genre of live play shows in general, it is the best live play show I've ever seen. Yes, I understand the gravity of what I'm saying. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Or even, watch you guys react to it? :O

I liked Calamity but honestly didn't think it was great. I had no emotional investment to the characters myself. Story telling was good but drawn out. Brenden was good even great. I really missed C3. I think I'm just too in love with Matt and the original cast. Changes to that mix always feel a little off.

i like how the opener starts with a TPK, side note if you liek the animation style, I'd suggest looking at Invincible. done by the same people. also an awesome super hero show, that puts a twist on things, throwing you off from the typical Marvel super hero movie tropes

I’m going to have to skip this one, since I’ve never seen this show. Have fun! I’m not sure if you take suggestions, but if you ever need to fill a slot, I’d recommend the Umbrella Academy. I think it’d fit in well with the rest of the current content

I recommend watching it. 12 episodes and they are about 25 minutes each. So not a big investment of time. Just make sure you watch the first three before giving up on it. As episode 3 is truly when the show comes into its own.

It is disappointing that CR with their big influence in the D&D and ttrpg community had to use Amazon Prime when there are so many other streaming options. Bezos is so terrible to his workers/employees. A missed opportunity to make a statement from Mercer and CR crew. Also, why does the gnome not look at all like a gnome?

Bidet. Paula you should get together with Kat and watch Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. Granted it is not the full standard cast, and Matt is nowhere to be seen, but it is short, and it is awesome. Quite possibly the best RPG I have ever seen. Maybe you'll turn her into one of us along the way. Even though I must admit, having a background in D&D playing does help, and having lots of patience and enough freetime to watch lengthy content, is really helpful. ;)
