    I think your MEANT to know the killer, it shows who it is in the very first scene where his mum dies, so Matt's point didn't make any sense.

    You're not supposed to detect them that early, their identity is meant to be a surprise (the Simmons character is meant to be a red herring, which wouldn't work if we knew who he was). That they cast an actor that looked exactly like the younger version certainly didn't help, but that wasn't the only reason it was obvious. There's a scene with the character halfway through where he suddenly moves into focus, and it was then I twigged it.

    It's Charlotte Gainsbourg's doctor boyfriend, one of the few roles not played by a major actor. There's a point where the killer, posing as Harry's fumigator, plants his medication in his house, and she discovers it with his name on it later, and she freaks out over it. Weirdly for a detective, Harry doesn't think much of it at the time, which in itself is incredibly dumb, and it takes him some time later to really figure it out. I figured it out even before, because he's a background character that then takes a train ride with Harry, and that scene pretty much gives the whole game away.

    I can't help but believe that Fassbender is soley taking movie roles now to keep the franchise trend where he stars in it. X-Men, Assassin's Creed, Alien, This. He needs to pick some better roles.

    The director seems to be lying about some of this. He says they ran out of time and didn't shoot some of the script, but elsewhere he admits he didn't notice they didn't have the needed footage until the editing process had already started. You can't both run out of time AND not realize the footage wasn't shot until the edit.

    Honestly, The Snowman sounds like another victim of studio meddling. Thomas Alfredson is a great director. Even if you don't like his previous films, there's no way you can say these films weren't directed brilliantly.

    Fully agree with this review, perfectly reflects my opinions on the film; The Snowman is a real stinker. I'm also glad you pointed out Fassbender's lacklustre performance in this film; he's obviously capable of much better and I think a lot of reviews gloss over this point (out of deference to his previous performances?). On a side note; I wonder if this is going to be the death knell for Scandi/Nordic-noir? It seems to me that on television as well as in the cinema, it's a genre which has run out of ideas and is now something of a diminishing return at this point.

There's plenty of smart tv on right now... I don't think the dumb audience excuse holds up. May be the length of the movie or lack of action to break up that length. With a television series you can break all the time up and pace it to your needs.

    The weirder thing about the serious is that Tomas Alfredson should know how to make a dark comedy considering that's what got him famous. He was part of a comedy group called Killinggänget which has some of the most famous comedians in Sweden and when he joined the group their comedy turned super dark (recommend you all, if you can find it with english subtitles, to watch Torsk på Tallinn, one of the most depressing comedies you'll ever see) and his father was very famous entertainer over here. This should've been right in his ballpark.

    As a Jo Nesbo fan I agree, this may be the worst film I've seen at the cinemas. It fails as a crime movie, considering there's no red herrings, as you mentioned, inconsequential plots keep coming through and through and all the females are either victims or pointless. (I didn't know about Val Kilmer's health problems so that explains why he's edited like Steven Seagal.) There's little to no character development, it squanders Jo Nesbo's writing and like for me, I don't understand why they chose Pop Corn as their leitmotif? (which you've guessed it, they dropped this little bit after the second scene it's brought up in because?) Like surely if you were going to use a '70s song as your leitmotif, why not do a '70s song where the main character murders people by turning them into snowman and where the main killer's M.O is marking their scene of a crime with a snowman? I mean god damn, there's a song which is literally this film and you don't use it, why? (The song in question by the by is Snowbound by Genesis.) All in all, it fails as a crime movie, it fails as an entertainment spectacle and it just fails full stop, like if it wasn't for the fact that Norway's such a lovely looking place and the cinematography of the outside scenes is beautiful it'd be a perfect 0 stars but alas I give it */*****. (Blade Runner 2049 on the other hand I give it ******1/2 stars/*****.)

    Timothy Sillery What a disappointment, I'm a fan of Jo Nesbo's book too (well maybe was, didn't quite digested Police yet) and while I was apprehensive for the movie (this kind of story is quite tricky to adapt), I was still hoping for at least an interssting take. Not hat awful mess. Anyway, on an unrelated note, I used to live in a city called Sillery.

  • @Campbellzilla

    @Campbellzilla

    6 жыл бұрын

    I don't know if I'd say X-men is on the downfall. Granted the main X-Men series saw a noticeable decline in box office and critical reception from Days of Future Past to Apocalypse, but even with the decline Apocalypse still made $500 million against a $178 Million budget. And with Deadpool and Logan still posting good numbers there's still life in the franchise. And even people who didn't think Apocalypse was very good, including Mathew, still said Fassbender was the best thing in the movie. I will however give you the Assassin's Creed and Alien debacles because from what I understand he had producer credits on those and should be held accountable.

  • @4Everlast

    @4Everlast

    6 жыл бұрын

    Sure, but then again, Deadpool norr Logan mention his character and he's not seen in either of those movies. DOFP and Apocalypse are like night and day in qualitty. And aren't there a new line of jung X-men on the way? Like a soft reboot of Fox/X-men universe?? And JES his character has a certant progress in Apocalypse and it is the best part about the movie, but when did studios care about qualitty?! It's all about nombers, man, all about the money. If Fasbender was sutch an asset, they would give him as they said they would, a stand alone Magneto film, and now after so many bombs at the box office, the suits, will say it's him that's box office poison, disreguarding the fact that evrything EXCEPT him was bad. But that's life for you, what you gonna do.

  • @Campbellzilla

    @Campbellzilla

    6 жыл бұрын

    Valid points yes, and the fact that the only upcoming movie Fassbender has on his resume is X-Men: Dark Phoenix is certainly a cause for concern. But as bad as Alien: Covenant and Assassin's creed were I believe they still broke even. As for The Snowman, it's a barely a blip on the radar(especially if the weekend box office numbers are any indication) so I am reasonably hopeful that Fassbender can bounce back from this rut because he has shown us time and time again how good he can be so he's nowhere near the level of Bruce Willis or Nicolas Cage at this point. And to answer your question regarding the young X-men, If you're referring to The New Mutants series that Josh Boone is directing that's more of a side series that will connect to the keystone franchise down the road but for the time being is doing its own thing and is more of a horror film than a superhero film.

  • @4Everlast

    @4Everlast

    I agree. On the toppic of the new X-men franchise, i hurd or read somewere they're building a new universe, pushing evrything that was buildt thus far, a side. • @FilmBrain

    I think he brings a real intensity to Magneto, a swirling ball of anger and grief, and he's one of the strongest parts of the prequels. Fassbender's best work is usually in his smaller films away from franchises (Shame comes to mind), but I am beginning to grow tired of his very serious performances, and he is getting a bit close to being a pastiche of himself. The man desperately needs to show a lighter side.

    I always recommend people watch The Snowman because it is so bafflingly and obviously terrible yet is a top-dollar blockbuster with an intriguing story and trailer, that I believe it makes people appreciate other films more. Also because the film is terrible at its core, but not all of its other facets which is actually very impressive. Most terrible movies have garbage acting with no-name actors, a very thin & stupid story; The Snowman is a different beast altogether. -Tim

    Brendan Milburn Even so, if he could take all the material that he was able to shoot, including scenes in the trailer but not in the film, and maybe try some serious restructuring and trimming to help the film flow better, I'd be interested in seeing it. Even if that's not possible, the least he could do is include deleted and alternate scenes on home video and a script PDF, and then maybe someone could stitch together a fanedit.

    As a Norwegian, this is pretty disappointing. It's very rare that we get any kind of recognision outside of Scandinavia, so when a famous Norwegian crime novel gets adapted into its first ever international film, it's a massive let-down when it bombs this badly.

    I had so the trailer for the movie TO many times on KZread. So much so, that I got sick of it. And usually, if a movie is being advertised that much, it's probably not very good.
