WTF Happened to The Hateful Eight?
Ойын-сауық
Upon winning his second Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the western DJANGO UNCHAINED, Quentin Tarantino wanted to ride it high…by helming another western, but getting THE HATEFUL EIGHT to the big screen-like, the really big screen-wasn’t easy. Plagued by uncooperative weather, technological tip-toeing, two significant leaks, and more, THE HATEFUL EIGHT was one of Tarantino’s most difficult shoots and one of his worst-received films - initially.
So tighten up that noose and tune up the Martin guitar as we find out…WTF Happened to this movie?!

I know why it's underrated, even as a Tarantino fan, I had to rewatch it to understand it. The story seems pointless until you realize the character arc of Walton Goggins. He starts off a Confederate racist son-of-a-bitch, but in the end, is bound by loyalty to Sam Jackson's character. When you understand this redemption arc, it makes sense.

I really appreciate how much Quentin Tarantino loves the Western. Good year for Kurt Russell too, as he was also in the horror tinted reimagining of John Ford's 1956 Western Masterpiece, The Searchers. The reimagining was S. Craig Zahler's Bone Tomahawk.

Honestly, I never had an issue with this movie. I thought it was a great contained drama / thriller. Not QT's best work, but not his worst.
My favorite QT movie. There's just something indulgent about its slow pace and deliberate lack of focus. It's almost the anti-movie, and I love it for that.
I normally dislike westerns, but Q really knows how to make a flick.
It's easily one of my favourite Quentin Tarantino films.
today I learned people apparently don't like this film? It's genuinely top 5 for me
This movie was quite a gem, I've watched it several times, and for a movie to fall on my rewatch list is an accomplishment 😂 I had no idea the "hate" around it, guess many out there would rather watch another regurgitated movie than true art!
Me and my dad got lucky. I found out that the 70mm he used was perfect for us. Because our local imax theater is one of the few in the states that has a 70mm projector. So we actually seen this film the way Quentin wanted us too.
I'm surprised that someone think it's his "lesser" or "worst" movie. I enjoyed it way more than I did Django or even Basterds, it's much more rewatchable imo, the cast is great, the atmosphere is superb. One problem I noticed is that tension oftentimes is very quickly relieved by irony or some gag, but other than that it's a really immersive movie. Also I'm surprised to learn that the whole thing took less than one year to film and edit, with all the complications and difficulties around it.
I got so excited when I saw the opening because I still have that shirt Jackson is wearing. I actually wore it yesterday!
This movie is a masterpiece.

I fail to understand how people consider this movie a major step back in Tarantino's filmography. This film is a masterpiece and highly underrated. It has great tension, great dialogue, great humor, and great suspense from beginning to end. I love The Hateful Eight a bunch and I have always considered it one of Tarantino's best works. I actually liked it much much more than Django Unchained. Sue me, I don't care.
I was shocked watching this movie because it flew under my radar which was weird for a Tarantino film, also the movie was excellent, one of his best for sure. Not sure why it was under-recognized, pretty sure it had nothing to do with him hating cops or being a "misogynist" though. Maybe because the scale wasn't as large compared to his other works? Django is an entire world, same with Bastards and even Once upon a time. Hateful 8 takes place all inside a cabin but to me the entire vibe of the movie felt very comfortable, like you're actually there drinking coffee during a blizzard. And the story was extremely well paced, dialogue was clever and witty, acting was phenomenal (Especially Walton Goggins). Each character was so intriguing as to be almost comical, like the movie is a satire on the mystery genre.
It's weird that this movie isn't more acclaimed, because it's one of my favorite movies
I can see why alot of people weren't too excited about this movie. But I really liked it even though it was long as hell.
@molasorrosalom4846

Westerns aren't as popular as they used to be. Plus, I think they released this around the time of Force Awakens.
If Hateful Eight is his "worst", then his worst might as well the "best" for other director. Hateful Eight is amazing. Trust me when I say that in 50 years, it will be regarded as aesthetically important. It will be appreciated by the future generation
I like this movie more than Django Unchained actually. It's sort of a throw back to Reservoir Dogs in that it's about a group of people stuck in one location who all hate and don't trust one another
Me and two other friends went to see it when it premiered in my country and it was one of the best experiences at the cinema. The theater was packed, the only thing that bothered me is that there wasn't an intermission in my screening, and by the halfway point I was dying to go to the bathroom, but I managed to remain in my seat 😂

Where are you from? Ive never heard of intermissions, im from France and when you need go to the toilet you just go for it
The thing is QT's filmmography overshadows his lesser known movies, like with every Pulp fiction you have a Jackie Brown, with every Kill Bill you have your Death Proof & with every Django Unchained you have your Hateful 8
We could SO get a badass sequel. Let's say that the Domingo Gang was actually not joking and actually did have more gang members waiting at Red Rock....That could be an awesome sequel if they take it to Red Rock with the other very much alive gang members terrorizing the town. We all know that Tarantino would put together another amazing cast for it. I would freaking love if Chris Mannix survived the first movie...Just call the movie "Red Rock". I'd go see it LOL

Looks like this is a pipe dream since Quentin Tarantino's final movie is the movie critic
I disagree with this film being one of QT worst received films... I thought it was a masterpiece. JJL, KR, WG, BD and SLJ gave epic performances.
Tarantino inspiration was his own Reservoir Dogs and John Carpenter The Thing none of the characters trust each and someone is not who they say they are
The movie was great. Not sure what JoBlo is smoking. I understand if it was one of those where critics rate it low and audience high, but both critics and audience loved this.
I watch this everytime there’s a snow storm here. I live in New England so we have rough winters. Snow storm tonight 😊
They sure do string her up at the end. His 1st and final act as Sheriff.
I don't get why this movie isn't up there with Django, and the rest. This is one of my top movies of all time I love the dialog and interaction between characters
It's a feature length character driven, chamber piece, close quarters bottle episode in 70mm. This could be a Broadway production or off Hollywood play in Burbank. It's his most dialogue driven piece since Reservoir Dogs. This movie is the lipman test that separates Tarantino Tourists from true Tarantino heads.

Jesus Christ, the entire movie was practically a carbon copy of Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, only with guns!
I don't think this was a bad movie, but it was certainly a hard film to watch. I got the DVD through my Netflix subscription, and NOBODY in my home wanted to watch it with me past the first few minutes. My sister and her fiance stayed for maybe ten minutes between then. My wife trailed into the room during the guitar scene, but I was the only person who watched it from beginning to end. Even having watched it, I'm hard-pressed to give it another viewing because the characters are all thoroughly despicable; while the story is engaging, it's not something that cries out for repeat viewing like THE TERMINATOR, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, THE GODFATHER, DEMON KNIGHT, ALIENS, or THE PROPHECY do for me.

@todo5183 I think perhaps I was too negative the first time. The film is beautiful. I really mean that. It's gorgeous. From the bone-chilling snow at the outset to the gruesome bloodshed--even the poison-induced vomiting--it's all captivating. The characters are each compelling in a myriad of ugly (and rarely noble) ways. The motivations are relatively straightforward, so it's a matter of, "how will these people interact, and who will survive?" The film has great bathos and pathos, and even without a protagonist or a hero, it felt cathartic to finish. I was sad none of my family wanted to complete the experience with me.

It's a slow burn movie that you can't really show to a party/gathering
I went to see this movie in, then, one of the few big theater left in my city. I don't know if it was because of the color grading or the theater's projection bulb was dim, but my first impression was that the screen didn't looked bright enough. Also, the theater was extra cold from the A/C and not many people in the seats, which kinda added to the experience.
Destroying that expensive and historically prized MARTIN guitar was a CRIME 😒
This is one of my all time favorite movies. Wonderful story. Wonderful dialogue. Maybe it’s just me. I watched this movie on the big tv in my living room late at night in the middle of a snow storm in Tennessee. Smoked out. I felt every sentence and coldness lol. Amazing film.

One of my favorite QT movies and favorite Westerns of all time. I can't wait until he makes it into a play.
It gets better with each watch. I think it was just so different from Django, which is so much fun. Once I got over that expectation it really grew on me.

How the hell wasnt i subscribed, been watching ages.
It was actually better than Django Unchained and Inglorious Bastards. Which really isn't saying a whole lot.
With all due respect I could not even finish watching this 12 minute clip about the film - you cannot strike gold every time
I remember cutting those rushes from Gunsmoke at film school. 😂😂
I've watched this movie probably 5 times in 2 years. Including the last 2 times as the 4 part extended series on netflix. This is literally right up there with pulp fiction for me. I love this movie!!!!
My favorite movie ever! I can recite all the dialogues to this day.
@10:23 I grew up with that picture above my couch!!!
I can't believe they got to shoot here in Colorado. I know my state is one of the few that will not give tax breaks or incentives to film here in Colorado. That's why most scenes supposed to be shot here are really shot in Vancouver. At least, that's how it used to be.
One of my favourite movies. Maybe my favourite QT movie. That said I "hated" my first viewing. Thought it was slow and hoping it would getting going to the good stuff. Many years later I revisited understanding its pace beforehand made me appreciate and chew up every scene just for the acting. Might go watch it tonight!!

This was a great movie. I recall watching it via download weeks before it came to a theater.
I love this film and all the stories behind it.
This one is actually one of my favourite, if not the favourite Tarantino movie. Because it's so slow and because of its dialogues. Closing the characters in the haberdashery gives the actors a chance to shine. It's Tarantino in a nutshell: just talk, talk, talk.
One of the best Tarantino movies alongside Inglorious Basterds, i've had countless movie nights with friends rewatching this on a winter month, i dont know why its so hated.
I wish I could go back and watch this movie for the first time again.
It was pretty entertaining as always, but the self-parody is a good word to describe my feeling about this one and Django. He can't seem to end them in a non self-conscious way, he seems to think more about ending them in a Tarantino way, with the typical tongue-in-cheek violently happy and cynical tone, rather than writing a good ending that serves the story. The difference is that Django was much more memorable.
HIGHLY UNDERRATED!
I saw this in the roadshow and took my Dad and we had a great time. I love this film
I met the love of my life because of this movie.
Definitely thought this was better than Django and one the most interesting movies made
Was really looking forward to it 70mm, intermission, Morricone, "Roadshow" edition...left the cinema being hugely disappointed. Have not watched it since, but feel it may be time to give it another chance
As much as Id love to work on a QT film. It's shit like how he forced the crew to freeze their asses off in a REFRIGERATED STUDIO for the Interiors! instead of just using a little cgi for the actors breath condensation, that crosses the line from Film Passion to Film Psychopathy.
HELP what's this clip from @2:50 😭 I NEED HELP
I loved it, well I mean I don't know if "love" is the right word; the characters are truly hateful and there's no real lesson to be learned, but esthetically it is just magnificent. Most of all, I don't get how you can call it "forgetable" or "not that memorable", at least if you watched it all the way through. I get it if you say it's not his best work, or that it's too long or not as well written, but forgetable?? The picture of Daisy brutally hangin' by the neck stayed in my head for a week after I first watched this movie in the cinema; or Major Warren's monologue or characters vomiting blood, heads exploding, it's brutal in a way you really don't see often, I don't know how can you forget such a thing, unless if it was too brutal for you so you repressed it into your subconcious.

That’s nuts that it’s his lowest acclaimed film. i had no idea. this is his Unforgiven. his Open Range. It’s nearly perfect for the genre. maybe that’s the problem. it’s too true to the genre and not wacky enough like django or Basterds.
