This review was originally posted in December 2015, and unlike the other episodes I've re-posted, this one is identical to it's original version. That's because this review was uploaded to KZread at the time, but I was afraid to make it public in case of any problems (at the time, I had only recently got my monetization back after it had been blocked for the best part of the year, without any notice or reason). So this has been sitting quietly private on my account since then, and since Kingsman is out this week, it seems like a fitting time to put it up. Obviously this means the review was made before Roger Moore's recent passing, so bear any comments in mind. For those who haven't seen this one, enjoy!

The NC and Channel Awesome as a whole seem to have been rather reticent on the topic of James Bond. What are the chances of a Bond season for Bad Movie Beatdown incl. the worst of each Bond - Diamonds are Forever Octopussy A View to a Kill Tomorrow Never Dies Quantum of Solace Think Licence to Kill and Die Another Day have already been reviewed by others and Licence to Kill is nowhere near as bad as the rest of this list but you could add those too. OHMSS is a stone cold Classic!

The documentary on the making was fascinating especially for the special effects, sets, and model crafting. ILM was busy so the studio basically said "Fuk it, we'll start are own company. How hard can it be?" Very. I'll let wiki stress the point. Since NASA's Space Shuttle program had not been launched, Derek Meddings and his miniatures team had to create the rocket launch footage without any reference. Shuttle models attached to bottle rockets and signal flares were used for take-off, and the smoke trail was created with salt that fell from the models. The space scenes were done by rewinding the camera after an element was shot, enabling other elements to be superimposed in the film stock, with the space battle needing up to forty rewinds to incorporate everything. The climactic scenes of the space station disintegrating were created by Meddings and other members of the special effects team shooting the miniature model with shotguns.[5][21] The superimposed big shot of the battle had everyone sweating bullets because if they messed it up halfway. Throw it out and start over! Thankfully it came out in one and was Gorgeous! Not to mention how often do you shoot your own miniature with shotguns while recording in high speed?!

Something about this movie's silliness and camp that I can't resist. Bad, but I love it.

I find it a useful divider between eighties babies and nineties babies: what is your tolerance for camp?

It’s the best Bond movie. I can watch this over and over and it stays fun. The modern serious Bond movies are better but I can only watch them once or twice. But with Roger Moore, I never get tired of him so he has better longevity for me.

The best thing that came of this were the Moonraker references in the GoldenEye 64 game. They gave us Jaws as a playable character, the moonbase level as an unlockable mission and the ability to dual wield laser guns.

@@93MANIAC The spectre thing has been overblow given in that film Bond and Blofeld pretty much knew each other for a couple of Summers while the Powers gag was an acknowledgement that hero and villain were clearly played by the same actor. Powers was a big factor in why Bond ditched the old formula and went more serious with Craig [as the man himself put it 'Powers f-ked us'].

I know I should hate Moonraker for being ridiculous, but I like the movie. Moonraker is more ridiculous than other Bond movies, but I always have a fun time watching it. Roger Moore is great as always as a more lighthearted James Bond, and Lois Chiles as Holly is one of my favorite Bond women.

Tommy Deonauth's Archives I don't like that Jaws was used for comedic effect. Moonraker has it's stupid moments, but I do enjoy the movie.

One thing I think you missed about Jaws is that for all his nasty killings, he DID have the very same Looney Tunes style fatal-yet-not-fatal accidents in the previous movie too - that scene where he collapses the house on himself, or where he drops a boulder on his own foot. So Moonraker just took that and made more of it, really - Jaws was always a villain you could laugh at despite being scary.

A common criticism of "scary" people, good or bad, in entertainment like Jaws got here is whenever they get a scene showing a significantly soft/funny side to them. The critics argue that we lose the fear we had for the character. That fear led to their respect and somehow, they argue, any heartwarming/funny scene with that character sparking or hinting a change in character/SMALL humour is a call for lost respect. I'm finding that argument stupid and dry now. Shouldn't we be pleased to see a bit more expansion/different sides to a character ONLY defined beforehand by the fear they provided. Before you argue, "That fear is enough! It's the only thing this character needs! Any other bits are unnecessary!", I'd say, "Wouldn't it be lovely to see lovely parts to this simply-defined character? Many times, it worked! And the development/humour you get from those precious moments are NEEDED for the plot and for the work, respectively! And yes, I know some works did it incorrectly or over-exaggerated it but Jaws' was done right, with unexpectable style, with proper pacing and ADDED DEPTH to his CHARACTER & the STORY. His worked just fine; and the trope in general CAN; no need to be extremely strict about it, critics. BTW, if any critics, though impossible it may be, provide a counter argument here, I'll be long gone. Cheers and adios.

As cheezy as this movie is, I love it. I still pine for the Roger Moore era of Bond, where he was funny and witty, not as grim and serious as Craig's Bond, and where the threats to the world were larger than life and fantastic. And honestly - I felt giving Jaws a love interest and a happy ending was a nice touch, given how most Bond villains usually end up horribly killed, regardless of how fond we are of them.

Oh my god. "Ew, James!" Is my favorite catchline for any awkward Bond moments. Period. XD

It's hilariously ironic how the novel version of Moonraker was considered dated at the time, yet it feels less dated than Broccoli's treatment of the story (hearkening back to the cold war tensions that would soon be apparent in the next couple movies) Science Fact indeed! XD

You can still see parts of the braces behind the rim of the glass when she drinks the wine. For some reason, they edited/removed the braces in later cuts of the film (including all VHS, DVD and Blu-ray releases). Which is a shame because the reason Jaws instantly falls in love with her is because it's revealed she has a metal mouth just like him. That's why the romantic music swells just as she smiles at him.

@@razzle2429 I've heard the suggestion that it was edited as the makers panicked, thinking the braces would suggest Dolly was a child (along with her pigtails). And that Jaws was having a romance with a school age girl.

When a series that didn't start off in space goes there it's usually a sign they're running out of ideas.

I've always thought Drax was the single "greatest" villain in all the Bond films (as far as his ultimate plan goes).

Same! I don't even mind his heel-face-turn either, because it makes sense in context. He doesn't just change his mind because he doesn't like Drax's plan, he changes his mind because he realizes that he and his new girlfriend wouldn't be a part of Drax's master plan. Jaws has gigantism and his girlfriend has poor eyesight - they would both be exterminated once Jaws' usefulness is over.

"Moonraker" was nominated for an Oscar for best achievement in visual effects in 1980. It went to "Alien" instead.

Great choice. And, speaking of Alien, I'd also genuinely kill to see what would happen if the Academy did 2 ceremonies a year. 1 a "Summer" ceremony choosing a random year, 10 years old or more, for a retrospective re-look and 1 the normal end of year ceremony. And, yes, wins in this retrospective would count as wins for all talent involved. Even if the person is dead.

I think I may be the only person to have spotted the Alan Partridge reference at the beginning. Well done, sir. "No, no, no!! Stop getting Bond wrong!!"

True story; I first saw Moonraker on a recorded from TV VHS, the tonal whiplash of the cut to Bond playing Cowboy had eight year old me thinking somebody had taped over the rest of the movie

this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. its very campy and pretty silly but i love it for that

I remember watching this with my dad in 1979 at UGC cinema in the newly built Palais des Congres, Paris, I was 6. First Bond movie ever. It was entertaining. Roger Moore was interviewed and rightly pinpointed this. You do not go to the cinema to leave feeling miserable....it should be an escapist experience. I even had the Corgi model with the satellite inside. Bond was a fantasy under Moore and I thank him for that. Moore was to Generation X what Connery was to Boomers.....

I will note that the Soviets did make a photo flashbulb laser that would burn out the lighting element, but yield just enough juice tot burn a hole into a space suit. We weren't having space battles, but preparations and considerations got pretty far... then the Soviet's magnum ops, an orbital laser, had a glitch that sent it straight back down instead of into orbit.

What helps differentiate Stromberg is that he genuinely believed in his rhetoric and thought he was ultimately doing what was best. Drax on the other hand has a God Complex and wanted to tout himself as the greatest in existence by means of disposing of human life on Earth so he could be the one to reshape it and get sole credit for that.

That Q Boat was later purchased by a man from downstate Illinois, funny enough.

Wow! This was... Quite the ride! I know that this Bond movie is aware of its ridiculousness, but it really feels like they wasted its runtime with all these comedy action scenes and had to rush the space gimick! At best, they feel like something out of an MGM cartoon! But hey, at least Roger Moore had fun with this role... It's not a groundbreaking role... But certainly a memorable one.

A true guilty pleasure, and shame on you for not mentioning the quite superb score by John Barry, and despite the fact that it has so many flaws its a perfect popcorn film of its time, especially compared to some of the big budget franchise dross thats churned out these days.

yes the bond movies have tendency to both be super dumb and silly and super awesome at the same time. like for example the man with the goldengun the car flip scene is awesome except they ruined by adding the sound effect and no one can take that scene seriously even though lets consider that the car actually did that flip.

Well, people having laser weapons in 1979 actually makes sense in-universe: after all, someone was able to build a Space Laser eight years earlier (Diamonds are Forever) powerful enough to blow up submarines underwater. Scientific plausibility is not a feature of _any_ James Bond movie, aside maybe the first Daniel Craig one.

Moonraker is 45 years old! Made $210.3 million on a $30 million budget being the highest grossing film of the bond series at that point even getting an Oscar nomination for best visual effects Also the first time the space shuttle was shown to audiences This has all the cool action mainly an all practical opening that involves free fall, a cable car fight without any safety harnesses, a speed rocket simulation sequence that's quite suspenseful, a brilliant score by John Barry, a wonderful theme song by Shirley Bassey, and beautiful locations from France to Italy to the Amazon The late Michael Lonsdale as Drax makes for a deliciously slimy villain, Lois Chiles as Goodhead is also a very capable Bond girl being sly able to resist Bond's charms being progressive (Moore looks very comfortable on screen despite their lack of chemistry) and the movie still holds the record for the most wire work ever used on film next to the most use of breakable glass Its also great to see fan favorite Jaws back again by the late Richard Kiel even if he gets the Mandela Effect so to speak with him finding a love interest Plenty of lush sets by Ken Adam as well as beautiful photography thanks to Albert R. Broccoli's team clearly showing every penny of it There's even one portion where one of the Bond girls faces a horrific death almost like out of a dark fairy tale The climax in outer space is very exciting too being an gravity free battle The film has been criticized for its over reliance on gadgets; for some it'll be a distraction but again director Lewis Gilbert is having fun with the concept despite all the over-the-top moments, even Moore expressed his made fun of the plot's absurdity Heck Austin Powers would parody a lot of this decades later not to mention the MCU's Black Widow lifts a few influences It has fun with itself while also poking at the casual sexism of women in the space workforce Drax is obsessed with the conquest of space so he has a plan do establish a human colony as a flawless perfect race with no genetic flaws even down to using poison gas in small containers on Earth This does tie into our own fascination with reaching the stars given what happened with the moon landing and Sputnik A lot of preposterous campy fun to be had here thanks to this script by Christopher Woods even if it deviates heavily from the book Yet it did take substantial risks in storytelling remaining relevant in the cultural landscape being fun escapism

Wait a second....A British Spy teaming up with a Female agent from the CIA... So that's where they got the Second Austin Powers movie from!

I gotta admit, when I was a little kid and saw this movie for the first time, I absolutely loved Jaws' good-guy turn. It's so idiotic, but I thought it was so cute. Oh well, I was five or so.

A few things: 1. Wow, Venice had it really rough back in the day, with James Bond and Indiana Jones wreaking havoc across it within 10 years of each other! 2. 17:25 - PffffftHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh my God, this is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I've ever seen. First of all, I've seen this kind of protective/combat gear, but I'm sorry, he just looks ridiculous. And secondly - and this is the biggest reason why I can't take this guy seriously - jumping out and screaming like an idiot completely defeats the purpose of a sneak attack. 3. 24:10 - Oooookay, so apparently there are women out there who have a thing for 7-foot men with metal choppers. But hey, who am I to judge, there are also women who find Ralph Fiennes sexy even in his Voldemort form! ....... I'm just kidding, ladies. Whatever floats your boat. 4. 25:15-25:28 - And people bitch about the product placement in Man of Steel! 5. 27:28 - Wow, that's NOTHING like the Union Jack parachute scene from The Spy Who Loved Me.

He's attempting to assassinate Bond with a kendo stick... and wearing a kendo suit. Why not just use a katana? Why wear a kendo suit outside a sparring environment where it's utterly worthless? Why is Chang, a Chinese name, so damn Japanese?

I think we all can agree on one thing, John Barry's score is better than the film.

I consider Jason X just got over-hated.

I liked Moonraker, because it was in space, and had Jaws. So the daftness was not a problem. It was very silly, but silliness was to be expected by that time.

It's amazing how this is such a remake of Spy lol 😂

Other odd thing is a Moonraker is actually a from of sail used in ships that allows for a fast pursuit or get away mainly used by pirates and smugglers.

One correction. In They Spy Who Loved Me, they never said Stromberg wanted to repopulate the surface. In fact, he wanted to live under the sea. One thing Moonraker corrects is the fact that they never said WHY Stromberg needed to start a holocaust. We saw a grand total of 2 women in his organization and they were both killed early on. Everyone on the tanker and sub crews were men. We didn't see anyone besides Stromberg in his city at the end.

I'm not particularly familiar with the Bond movies, so the thought of a villain whose ultimate plan is "live under the sea" is just hilarious. I can't think of why the sea is better than the land considering how much trouble it would be to go through just getting stuff like _air to breathe_.

Well the guy was one of the richest men in the world and simply had an obesession with the sea and sealife. It's kind of like Goldfinger's obsession with gold. In the film, he made the usual comments about mankind being decadent, but also stated that living under the sea was the only hope for mankind's future. I think he was supposed to have some sort of environmental slant, but if he did it ended on the cutting room floor. Alternately, the original plan was to use Blofeld as the villain (making it even more of a You Only Live Twice copy) and when they couldn't use the character, changed the name and quickly came up with a weak motivation so they could do the car-sub and jetski bits. It's still much better that Moonraker

Most hilarious Science fiction part was the Moon Rakers boosters having enough fuel to sustain flight

Bad as this movie is, I still enjoy it. It's a damn sight better than any of the Daniel Craig movies, at least...

You gotta love Moonraker. It’s peak camp Bond, but with a good balance of serious elements. Drax is a great villain, Jaws’ return was neat, as well as his redemption, the score is grand, the space effects are great, Ken Adam knocked it out of the park with his sets, and Roger Moore still delivers his awesome performance. Moonraker is no less cheesy than The Spy who loved me, so I don’t see why the latter gets all the love but Moonraker doesn’t.

Just look at the pre title sequences of Spy and Moonraker and you will see the difference. The former ends it's sequence with a spectacular dive off a mountain and Bond opening a Union Jack parachute. Moonraker? That ends with Jaws flapping his arms about and crashing into a circus tent. I think that appropriately summarizes the difference. Spy Who Loved Me is cartoonish but it's primary concern is thrills. Almost every Moonraker action scene seems to be just building up to a gag.

This movie may be stupid as a sack of shit, and it jumps the shark pretty high, but it is still fucking entertaining.

Hugo Drax is the best Bond villian ever.

Manuela is my favorite part of the film and one of my favorite Bond girls ever. It's a shame she's only in the film for 10 minutes or less to only hook up with Bond and be manhandled by Jaws. Emily Bolton was so insanely gorgeous.

webkilla Pretty badly... But considering how the Austin Powers movies killed the more campy side of Bond movies by spoofing the ridiculous elements up to eleventy seven... It would look like a rip-off of those movies.

Now is a good time to do it actually. Private space travel and even private low orbit living is legitimately science fact. Pulling a space Bioshock with James Bond could be really gripping.

It would be too serious and not much fun. I grew up with Roger Moore as Bond but I don't like him in this role, I wanted Michael Caine to be Bond, and Daniel Craig have nothing to '70s Michael Caine, Moore was pretty much parody of the whole character, and I don't think that Moonraker is his worst, that goes to Octopussy, sexual pun even in name of that movie, for me the worst Bond movie ever (Quantum of Solace was pretty close but it is the second worst). Spy who Loved Me is my personal favourite, the best Bond movie, and I was in love with Barbara Bach as Bond girl in this one, only thing that would improve thas is recast Timothy Dalton (my number one Bond) instead of Roger Moore. But hey, I am somebody who actually likes In Her Majesty's Secret Service, not for George Lazenby but still.

How generic, it almost could be a plot for another Jason Borne's movie. That I can accept, Jason Borne as a hero in this kind of movie.

Don't forget Xenia Sergeyevna Onatopp and her lethal kegels of death. But mind you these films weren't for the pornhub set. These were for guys with tricked out vans with shag carpeting, a full stereo 8-track tape deck, sturdy supension and an actual woman. ...and all the Hai Karate and Courvoisier fumes she could stand

I suspect that the "women are pets, not people" theme of this movie, was the result of a national backlash of insecure males, against the progress of the feminist movement. In the 1960s, the Pill put contraception solely in the hands of women for the first time in history. The 1970s saw laws passed against sexual discrimination (including paying a woman less than a man, for doing the same job), sexual harassment (if your male colleagues or your boss groped you, you could now report it to the police, and press charges; and sue if you were fired in retaliation), Roe Vs. Wade allowed women to legally terminate their unwanted pregnancies, there were millions of more women in the work-place than there had been since WWII (and not just in traditional "women's" jobs) and on top of that, for the first time ever, strong women were starting to appear all over popular culture. Shows like Wonder Woman, Police Woman, Bionic Woman, Charlie's Angels...etc. inspired millions of little girls (who took lunchboxes of the aforementioned shows, to school, and played with the action figures) to believe in themselves, and inspired them to be brave, strong, and independent. Strong female leading characters also started showing up in the movies: Ripley from Alien, Princess Leia in Star Wars...etc. And all of this terrified and enraged men who were insecure of their masculinity. This movie was for them. But even so, is no one going to comment on the fact that they apparently chose a 13-year-old child to be Jaws' love interest? I think that even the average misogynist would look at the two of them, and think, "Dude, that's messed up".

Anyone, men or women, taking Bond's character seriously (especially when portrayed by Roger Moore) is over-intellectualizing IMHO. These movies were meant to entertain..... plus Jaw's love interest is not meant to be a 13 year old child but a ridiculous, immature adult. Unworthy of the "master race". I certainly do not think the directors thought of any pedophilia repercussions. Blanche Ravalec, the actress was 25 at the time! It is all "messed up" and supposed to be!

Cheshire Kat; And history seems to be repeating with a new generation of insecure males who are aggressively assaulting vocal women who expose the misogyny and male privilege of today's society. These self-entitled, social status nutjobs spit out derogatory terms such as "feminazi" and "SJW" with vile, visceral venom. Hell, there's even two new hate groups for these charming chaps now... (MRM and MGTOW). Check out the self-proclaimed "incel" in Toronto who recently plowed down innocent people on the sidewalk in a van (killing 10, and hospitalizing 16) all because he was turned down by one-too many women and then got the bright idea from another MRM nut who did the same crime in California.

Except there are woman who take femanisim WAY to far. The whole point of feminism is to make men and woman equal in term of opportunity and what they can do. But some want to tip the scales so woman are in control and slander men so hard as to convince those that fallow them that all men are evil. I remember a story of a woman who had a male classmate removed from class because him simply sitting near her made her uncomfortable. I'm not saying this is all woman but the extreme side of the movement has created big problems. It's gotten to the point a lot men in work places fear working with woman because they fear one misstep or misinterpreted sentence and the woman will accuse them of sexual harassment and they will be fired. There are also woman who want more female presence in media, which is certainly a good thing, but don't care about the quality or the movie or franchise. Just that it stars woman. Amy Pascal from Sony is a perfect example. She insisted the new Ghostbusters be all female and said anyone who didn't like it, regardless of their reason, was sexist. Kathleen Kennedy did the same thing with Star Wars. When people didn't like The Last Jedi she said those who hated it where just man babies intimidated by the fact a strong female was the lead.

Seriously?... You're going to hit below the belt and discredit an entire equal rights movement by focusing on a very small niche of women who can't tollerate men (presumably because of traumatic abuse in their lives)? ...Classy. If you take the time to search, you'll find people like that in any equal rights movement, be it feminism, black civil rights, gay pride or transgender support. There will always be the minority that vocally hate the oppressors. Don't be shocked.

Egalitarians actually want equality between men and women. Feminists are just female supremacists trying to pass themselves off as an equal rights movement. They're convinced that all men are sexist pigs who want to rape every woman and are convinced that there's a nonexistent conspiracy of men called "the patriarchy" who want to take away their rights. Feminists also make women paranoid that there's rapists waiting for them around every corner and are convinced that anyone who doesn't give them their own way just because they're women is sexist.

As bad as this movie is, the stunt work on the cable car scenes give me chills because there were real people on that car, no CGI like today.

Fun fact: Adam West was offered the role of James Bond

A lot of people are not that fond of the Roger Moore era, otherwise know as "The era of the Eyebrow", due to the silly comedic moments that all of his films had shoved in, that were not present in any of the other Actor's movies. That is until the last couple of Brosnan's outings and those caused them to completely reboot the "feel" of the franchise for Casino Royale.

Worst part about this review is that it marks the end of "Ready to Roll" being the opening theme replaced now with bleep bloop bullshit even on the very rare occasion that Film Brain does BMB (though I think the series is defunct now)

LOL, the girlfriend in the glasses looks like proto-Bernadette from Big Bang Theory.

Way to go Jaws!!!

Great movie! Piss off!! The title song is beyond beautiful.
