This is a recut version of a previously two-part episode originally posted in September 2010, that stitches both versions together into a single video, and loses 2m 46s in total. Cuts have been made to reduce dragging, cut down movie clips, and obviously the intros and outros for each part. (The first ad break is where the first episode ended.) I've also made other tweaks: I redubbed a line to correct an error in the early recap, and I tried to fix the aspect ratio issues with Welshy's segment as well. As far as my feelings on this review, I do regret that I kept calling it a "children's film" instead of a "family film", because that's a small but important distinction: my point, however, that I feel that the opening is very out of step with the rest of the movie still stands, even if I could have articulated it better. This remains, to date, the longest film covered on the show, but I found myself not having a lot of material to work with in the two-part format, which is something I should have noted as it highlights the lack of real story as the film stalls the previous film's conclusion. So this is a review I have somewhat mixed feelings on, but I know this is a fairly popular one, so enjoy!

Thank you for this review. I love the whole POTC universe. BUT this was honestly the weakest/annoying films out of the 3 original films and I laughed so hard at "ejackulate on the audience". I will say that I never thought the films were intended for children. I always have thought they were intended for teens-young adults.
This movie really has two big problems. The first is that while all the deals and backstabbing and disregard for life may be realistic, it makes it hard to follow what's going on, and hard to root for anyone when all the characters are murderers. The second problem is that the whole pirate king and pirate laws make the pirates way less interesting. Pirates are fun because they are outlaws who don't follow rules or laws except their own morals. Putting them in a structured society of kings and laws takes away what makes pirates fun.

I never thought of the Pirate movies as for kids. (Or families in general except for families with older teens.) Disney or not, these movies are made for adults.
@FilmBrain
7 жыл бұрын
I'd agree that it's made for a slightly older audience, but it's still an escapist Disney film aimed at a very broad audience (like most blockbusters are, but especially theirs, even the PG-13 ones) so kids are definitely meant to be part of the audience as well. They are, after all, based on a theme park ride.
@JamiJR
7 жыл бұрын
Even the original ride wasn't really meant for kids though. It used to be the pirates were chasing women with the intention of raping them. (Except for the fat lady who was trying to rape a pirate.) Course they changed it all to chasing for food. I know people think Disney = kids, but I think Disney wants to branch out to more adult stuff.
@FilmBrain
7 жыл бұрын
Disney has, most notably with the sub-labels Hollywood Pictures and Touchstone, branched into more adult material, but the main brand has always been consistently family entertainment, even as they branched into PG-13 territory. I'd say the Marvel Studios films are the closest they have these days to "adult" material, given those other labels are all but retired now.
@JamiJR
7 жыл бұрын
Well, since you're the professional and this is your passion I'll bow to your superior knowledge. I'm just a fan with an opinion which I fully admit I could be 100% wrong. I just never felt the Pirates movies were family movies but rather movies meant for adults who grew up watching old Errol Flynn movies. Just like "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?" seems more meant for adults despite the cartoons in them. (And the book it's based on, *extremely* loosely, is even more meant for adults.) Maybe with the success of movies like Deadpool Disney will realize you can have fun movies with a R rating and branch into more and more grown up stuff. Now that Marvel has the rights back for Blade as well as Spider-man I'd love to see a Blade movie so eventually we could do a Blade/Spider-man crossover and introduce Michael Morbius, the living vampire. And those movies would need to be R-rated.
@WoodyWoodpecker19843

@@JamiJR The Rock was an R rated Disney film made by Hollywood Pictures and Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films but Disney have never made an R rated film under their family friendly banner.
I think what movie reviewers often forget with children movie sequels, is that the children the original movie was intended for, aren't children anymore. Mathew here forgets that "That World's End" didn't come out the same year as "Curse of the Black Pearl". Those "children" this movie is intended for are at least four years older now! Black Pearl (2003) was rated PG-13, so the youngest of this movie's intended audience are now 17 (World's End came out in 2007), more then old enough for darker material and probably looking for something more adult in their entertainment. So movies of this nature should grow up with their audience, because their audience doesn't exist in a timeless bubble. Of course you want to draw in new audiences as well, so you don't want to completely lose the kid friendly tone, but you don't want to draw in new fans at the expense of losing the old. Most movie critics forget that.
@davidjames579
3 жыл бұрын
But by that logic the film should be R Rated. Also they need to sell toys off of this. While you don't want to lose the first kids who watched this, ostracizing younger kids is a terrible idea. You can balance both with the original's tone, with a darker film you only keep one audience. Also bear in mind viewers of all ages might like the tone set in the first. If you change this you're effectively selling them a different franchise, and they might not be into that darker tone.

+Petrino Not really a myth; just a convention that's not as absolute as people think. Technically speaking under common law a wedding doesn't need to be officiated by anyone; two people can just live as man and wife without the benefit of a ceremony. A wedding ceremony is more for the sake of tradition than to make a marriage legally binding. But it is a tradition among many countries and cultures that a captain of a ship, while that ship is at sea, can stand in as someone to officiate a wedding.

These movies are not meant for kids either. The first has skeletons in it, which is too scary for them. The hanging at the beginning sets the tone. It shows how harsh the west indies are against pirates. Yes, the movie is still the worst of the first 3 movies. But it has its charm, its funny moments and good action. Well, to disagree, Pirates of the Caribbean is not generally targeted at a child audience. The films were meant to target both kids AND adults, thus having more mature content and themes. It was never meant to be strictly for kids. If youre making a movie that you want to appeal to both kids and adults, then thats what you do. It has a PG rating(which it shouldnt really) , so "TECHNICALLY" little kids wouldnt be watching it without their parents.

Yeah, as note above, it's made for a "family" audience, so it does have material aimed at adults as well. I'd argue the opening goes too far to that side of the spectrum, especially when it features the death of a child. It's a bit unnecessary for an escapist blockbuster, even one that is going a bit darker than previous entries.

I saw these films at a young age and personally I didn't feel traumatized by the hanging scene - nor did any of my other friends echo such a sentiment. Are we forgetting Clayton's death scene in Tarzan? This isn't unprecedented imagery. It's not like we're watching the entire Dance of Death on screen. As a kid I played and consumed tons of violent media - and I think tons of other guys in my generation did too - so this wasn't really that shocking for me. Hell at age 10 I killed my first deer and my dad made me take a bite of its raw heart. If that didn't disturb me, a movie certainly won't.
Lo and behold, Kingdom Hearts 3 actually has a Kracken boss fight. Almost as if it turned into a fix fic of this very movie.

In the second film you get a guy being eaten alive by crows while in a cage, they imply that the characters are trapped in a cage made by the bones of their friends, they have the Kraken and Davy Jones, some pretty scary shit, and that’s not even mentioning the generally creepy atmosphere. Show this to a 7 year old, they won’t be able to sleep for a while. The film’s core demographic was young adults, and it had a PG13 rating. instant like foe welshey!
Yeah....I don't understand how Hollywood writers cant come up with some kind of creative wway to explain how Jack Sparrow is still alive after being eaten by the cocktopus This reason alone is why I turned it off and watched Investigation discovery
So is At Word's End the only bad Pirates of the Caribbean or are you going to do one for any of the others?

I remember not being impressed with the fourth film, but I've not seen it in a while. I've been considering doing another Depp/Verbinski film when I get chance, though...

@@justdannyquinn I thought that movie was fun despite it being 2 hours 30 minutes.

@@WoodyWoodpecker19843 I really didn't mind it myself, but I can totally get why some people didn't like it though.
I almost walked out of the movie during the Jones' locker scene, and a friend went to sleep.
In the end, they should've turned it into a anthology. Keep Jack, Barbossa, Flying Duchman stuff, but have new main characters for each new movie, instead of stretching out and padding out both the run time and character evolution.

This series is nothing without Johnny Depp lol
Huh, and here I thought Rodgers was King of the Pirates. Now that would certainly have spiced things up!
I think they should've had the Sequels be different adventures with the same characters, similar in vein to what they did with Indiana Jones, which I believe was what the Writers originally planned to do.

this film aint perfect but aint bad
I feel like “ the people aren’t cargo mate “ should have been kept in
22:16 Haha! Jack and Jones!
Actually...the 2nd and 3rd Pirates movies felt like a D&D/Pathfinder campaign at sea and with pirates. So...that explains why I sortof like it. .__. What killed it for me was the over-reliance on Depp being a tosspot...
Ok let's get this straight Confusing? In what way? They explain everything going on in a few scenes. Also it's pg-13 for a god damn reason. In the pirate world there are such things as sexual references, rape, hanging (Even children), and much more. At times it was a mess but it did still feel a little solid
I think it seemed more personel because Elizabeth felt guilty for lusting after Jack throughout the entire film (straight from the directors) However she makes it seem like revenge. you could have the same traumitzed thing about the Crow eye scene from the second one and both were rated Pg-13 so yeh. Also what always annoyed is WTF did Will's heart need to be cut out? Jones cut his out from the pain of love. Makes no fucking sense. I'm pretty sure the visual of Beckett walking around his destroyed ship was rip offed from Farscape.
GOTTA AGREE WITH THE BRAIN
21:25 STOP! Tentacle time.
Michael Bolton is like...
