You can find it too,i know quite a bit myself Google dr Paul lee and his pages he covers alsorts and there are all the lifeboat survivor accounts it's really interesting and fascinating. Pretty much covers everything,j just put in 'Dr Paul lee TITANIC ' one thing most don't know is that the fourth funnel was used for the smoke from the 1st class smoking room and also one of the gallies. Only a bit came through but it's true, other things like Alexander Carlysle was the builder of TITANIC not Thomas Andrews he just finished her and there are lots of things it's really interesting I spent hours looking through stuff then reading it again.

The gangway door started flooding at 1:15. It took another 1 hr 5 mins to sink. Since the area of the gangway door was equal to the rivet damage, if this door was closed, the titanic would have had an additional 1 hr 5 mins. That means, instead of sinking at 2:20, she would have gone down at 3:25. And ya, apart from that as in my last comment in the last video, the stern may have stayed afloat, thereby preventing the full ship from sinking. And even the bow would have sunk after the break at around 3:15 or so.

10.15. i would say that this image shows a much later point of the sinking, more around 1.50 or even close to 2.00 AM. With the Gangway door submerged, the flooding increased at a factor of 2-3 and that would gave the ship not much time to stay afloat. 1.35 AM was-in my opinion-the earliest time the water even reached this Gangway doors base. ...The water did not reach the door zone until around 1:40 a.m. Survivors reported that the bow and the well deck only disappeared into the water shortly before 2 a.m. and that, given the inclination of the ship, that was about the time the door must have been completely sunk. With a size of 2.6 m², the door had twice the area of the suspected iceberg damage of 1.3 m² and the open door increased the flooding of the ship by a factor of 3! It is relatively easy to mathematically calculate when the door was flooded by using two different sink rates, one before the door was flooded and one after it. Before that, the average rate of descent was 8-10 cm per minute; after the door was flooded, it increased by a factor of 3 to approx. 25-30 cm per minute. The distance between the sea level when the door was submerged and the bridge was around 7 meters. So when the door was completely submerged, the navigation bridge only protruded approx. 7 meters above the water level and the forward welldeck was already clearly flooded. 7 meters divided by 25 centimeters accelerated rate of descent as a result of the open door result in about 28. 28 minutes! So after the open door was completely flooded, the ship still had 28 minutes before the outer waterline reached the bridge - in very simplified terms. As is well known, the water reached the bridge at around 2:10 a.m. This time minus 28 minutes gave us the time 1:41 a.m. In summary, this means that the sinking could have been slowed down considerably if the door had been closed completely. The ship would not have sunk by 25 centimeters per minute over these last 7 meters, but more slowly, perhaps per only 8-10 centimeters. So the last twenty to thirty minutes of the sinking could have been delayed almost twice as long, i.e. about 45-55 minutes longer. Of course, this calculation does not take into account the additional open portholes, the flooded welldeck or the foredeck, through which additional water flowed in and we dont know the number of open portholes.

What I think is that the 300 tons of coal that was added may have contributed a little to the list to port, the D deck gangway door was the main cause for the titanic to list to port, Scotland road was also a factor of the list. Had Andrews looked into these factors more closely, he may have gotten his predictions correct. Once again a great video sam! Also the ending was funny haha!

To put the D-deck gangway into context - the estimated total iceberg damage to the ship was 12 square feet. The size of the gangway was 3' by 6'6" - 19.5 square feet. Once the water reached that point, suddenly there was a 150% increase in water ingress area (and yes, I understand, it took for the gangway to be fully submerged for that increase to happen). Controversially, I've believed now for decades that if that gangway had remained shut there's a chance the ship may have lasted hours longer. Possibly not even sank. There is anecdotal evidence that the hydrostatic head at the front of the ship had nearly equalised by the time the water reached here. And, ironically enough, with the slight starboard list and Scotland Road being on the port side, this would have limited the Scotland Road effect. The two things which I firmly believed doomed the ship that night were this gangway and the possibly fire-weakened coal-bunker bulkhead collapse. And yes, I realise I am saying that both Andrews and Edward Wilding were wrong in their calculations. I believe they both calculated worse-case scenarios based on departure draft and load-trim.

  • @lukethomas.125

I could also theorize that the list to port was encouraged by the result of moving all of the coal in the coal bunker of boiler room 5 because of the fire that had taken hold a couple of days ago.

Actually, one way to confirm that the portside D-Deck door was opened would be if we could find any testimony by anyone in the lifeboats, particularly Boat 6, if they recollect seeing the door or any similar gangway door open on the ship during the sinking. I cannot find any that would corroborate Lightoller's statement and the men that went down to carry out his order did not survive. The other fact to consider is how closely the sinking of the Titanic matched the calculations of Thomas Andrews, indicating that the sinking was not accelerated, at least not enough by the door being opened or rather not opened as the case may be.

The opening of the D Derck door was done for a number of reasons, firstly there were a number of booms projecting out of the side of the Titanic just below the boat Deck, secondly a number of female passengers refused to try and get into the life boats from the Boat Deck because the gap between them and the hight of the Boat Deck and the water, and finally there were a number of life boats launched below capacity. These boats had been tested with 70 + workers from Harland and Wolff during Titanic's construction. You have to look at Charles Lightoller's point of veiw, he and a number of the other senior officers believed that the ship would reach a point where the bulkheads would hold and slow if not stop the sinking, so she got 6 men including the Deck Crew's Head Albert Big Neck Nichols to go down open the door and try and get these part filled boats back and add more passengers to them. He took his order from CHarles Lightoller and he and his men went below to do their duty and were never seen again. Why did Charles Lightoller forget about the D Deck door being open to the sea, well he was trying to prep the remaining life boats to be launched and since a number of the Deck Crew had gone to open the door he was short staffed, and this is why not so many of the trained deck crew were not free to man the remaining life boats. These stories such as the one for Albert Big Neck Nichols are as important to the story of the the loss of the SS Titanic as any other story, be it Thomas Andrew, or J Bruce Ismay.

One collapsible launched with crew to secure materials into floatation ,tables, tubs, doors, pots, seats, large rafters ,ceiling joices. All that manpower collectively working. Could of been less lives lost and like Sam mentioned, one crew team should of been on steady hatch patrol to assure dumb dumbs did not open to look out. A common piece of patio furniture to buy time with rescue on the way to keep torso afloat is better than NOTHING. Losing limbs is better than losing life. Bed frame with mattress wrapped in canvas were all over that vessel to construct two human floatation. May not of been for long term, but sure to buy an hour or two afloat. Wood built knee walls all over passenger decks could of been worked off with bare muscle. All the windows on deck with dining room, those wall sections below glass. Cannot just give up.

Great video, but why was the d deck door left open in the first place? If memory serves right (and it usually doesnt) it just wasnt locked correctly, but in the THG animation the door is swung fully open, and this is lightoller were talking about, surely he wouldve been able to correctly lock the door?

There's a titanic series on KZread called answers from the abyss that actually highlights some of the iceberg damage referred to by fireman Barret. I thought for a long time that it was all concealed by the mud. I thought it was super interesting to see the damage.

I don't know if I can fully accept that the D-Deck gangway door was ever opened. We have 2 arguments that it was: 1. Lightoller sent Bo'sun "Big Neck" Nichols down to open it and 2. it is open on the wreck. But we have no way of knowing whether Nichols and his crew succeeded in their efforts - they never reported back to Lightoller and, in fact, were never seen again. Lightoller himself assumed they were lost in the effort. As far as the door being open on the wreck, it is POSSIBLE that that is mere coincidence. In fact, on the wreck, only ONE of the 2 doors is open. The other remains shut. That means either Nichols and his crew DID succeed in opening the first door, and were 'overwhelmed' before they could open the other, or the door opened either on bottom impact or other circumstance somehow during the descent, and the fact that a door Lightoller ordered open being in fact open is, as I said, just coincidence. It's significant that, not only is only ONE of the 2 doors opened, but I can't recall offhand any survivor testimony as to seeing a or the doors opened from a vantage point where they COULD see it (but I could be drawing a blank on it at the moment) Lightoller was in fact supervising the loading of the lifeboats on that side, and never was aware of the door being opened - I would think that, if he happened to look down the ships' side, he would be able to see at least somewhat of a 'glow' of light coming from inside of an opened D-Deck door below him, leading him to have someone investigate whether his previous order had been carried out - he would have seen it, as he had intended it - as an aid to helping him load the boats. Basically, I'm saying the argument that the door was even open to cause the sinking to accelerate has to remain conjecture.

You can lift a sunken ship with pingpongballs. If you would have an aircompressor and a buttload of balloons, you could fill the compromised compartments with air filled balloons on ship.

@Historic Travels, can you do a what if video on if Scotland Road was able to be blocked off at the watertight bulkheads and if the gangway door wouldn't have been opened? Lumped together for this reason: how long would the ship have survived had those two factors not existed as they did.

Great video again. Question, couldn't they run simulations to determine 'if' the door was open, and if it was, if it was responsible for the port side shift in the singing? Likewise, the impact of the door being open to the speed of the sinking?

Hey sam. Good job on these videos. Very knowledgeable about the titanic. I do have a question though. How much faster did the titanic sink with the gangway door being open? Would she have remained afloat significantly longer had it been closed? Thanks.
