I can't imagine a more heroic but terrifying death those engineers faced. To still be deep within the belly of the ship only minutes before the ship split in two must have been horrifying, but they were selfless heroes and knew their fate was a small price to pay if they could save thousands of other passengers.

Lifeboat math - in the film, Andrews says "The boats were tested with the weight of 80 men! Fill them up men!". Think about the weight of 80 men, fully clothed in heavy wool. Average maybe 200lb each x 80 = 16,000 lbs. 8 TONS. Plus the weight of the boat. Imagine crew trying to lower probably 20,000 pounds of weight using 2 ropes, by hand, in low light, extreme cold, and total chaos. Each rope holding 10,000 lbs. All the way from the boat deck to the water (maybe 70-80ft?). Extremely hard. One little slip and the whole boat is going to flip over and everyone die. Plus at the beginning people weren't willing to risk their life doing that, thinking there was no sign whatsoever that it was sinking.

It wouldn't have worked that way. The davits were designed to bear most of the weight, otherwise, lowering would have been impossible, even if the crew had been built like Hafthor Bjornsson.

The main reason many bodies were never found/recovered is because of these men working in the Titanic went down with the ship. Some passengers stayed in their cabins and other third class passengers were trapped down below or didn't know how to go to the top deck. This means many people were inside the ship as she sank

In some ships have sank (and capsized), they would not been able to use all the lifeboats. Another problem is that since Captain Smith cancelled the lifeboat drill that was scheduled for the morning of Sunday, April 14, the crew didn't have adequate training on how to the lifeboats resulting in chaos that night. They made have had some training at Belfast.

Something to consider taking a modern cruise ship - that you have a designated place on a lifeboat doesn't mean you will be able to get to that boat on time, or that it shall get launched at all. Now then, cruise ships don't go down every day, but we had Estonia not so long ago and that one didn't go well despite adequate lifeboat complement.

I can only imagine what must have been going through Philip’s head as he pounded that Marconi away hoping someone, anyone would reply back. You also gotta remember he had been working Cape Race and likely hasn’t slept so all of that stress on top of the sinking, no wonder he went into “Hyperfocus Mode” in a vain attempt to do something for the ship. It must have been haunting for the nearby ships to here this desperate musical-esque chime of Titanic’s Marconi only for it to be dead silent. Bride standing there watching his friend go deeper into madness must have been awful too. These two deserve a lot of credit too, they stayed at their post until the water was at their waist. Also if I recall correctly, I remember James Cameron saying he regretted the Murdoch scene because it was purely for suspense and he didn’t think about the consequences it would bring to the descendants of Officer Murdoch. I believe Lightoller witnessed him being washed away from the ship at one point but I don’t remember exactly. (I am a huge Titanic nerd lol) Anyway man, great video as always. Regarding shootings on the Titanic, the book The Story of The Wreck of The Titanic which was published in 1912, included primary accounts from survivors who stated that there were indeed shootings (though very few, perhaps a couple at most) of passengers trying to rush lifeboats, and if memory serves one witness stated that he was certain that Murdoch did indeed shoot himself just prior to the final plunge. I tend to go with this myself, as Murdoch was partly to blame for the sinking being in charge of navigation while Capt. Smith had retired to his private quarters, and having not ordered the central/rudder screw to full ahead which would have allowed the ship to turn tighter. He must have been aware of this after the collision - he must have felt tremendous guilt as the sheer scale of the disaster unfolded.

Likely she would have been severely damaged, but quite likely would have been afloat when Carpathia arrived. The upgrades Olympic and Britannic received were extensive, including all the water tight bulkheads being raised to B-deck and an inner skin for the boiler and engine rooms. As for the ship herself.......if only the first four compartments flooded, she would have survived and been towed to a shipyard for repairs before returning to service.

Good morning, Historic Travels & Historic Travelers- I am so glad you said what you did about First Officer Murdoch. I don't believe he committed suicide, either. Cameron's film did a tremendous disservice to his memory with an inexplicably negative portrayal. They have him taking bribes, shooting passengers, then turning the gun on himself- none of which had any solid basis in reality. Great work again! Your fresh, upbeat perspective is breathing new life into the subject. Oh, and a video idea- 2 words: Dazzle ships! Olympic recieved dazzle paint during WWI, so it ties in well...

Hi Sam, You're series is absolutely brilliant. Thank you for all your hard work and thanks to Rachel for her input. I agree with Johanna that you should write your own book. Questions: We hear about Officers Murdoch and Light roller, but what were the other officers doing during the sinking? If the original crew hadn't been charged, do you think there could have been a different outcome?

I'm really enjoying this series (although because of the algorithm, I've ended up watching it in reverse order). Not a lot of the information is new to me, but the way you have presented it (as an ongoing story) is, and I think helps to give a much better overview of the growing chaos of the night. I have to say that I agree with you about the lifeboat situation - I've oftened tongue-in-cheek told the more casual fans of the Titanic story that if she'd had enough lifeboats for everyone, then half of them would have gone down still tied to the ship.

Love all your videos Sam! I'm so glad that you cleared up that insulting bullsh!t about Officer Murdoch shooting passengers and then committing suicide. It was just wrong and no doubt very distressing for his descendants to see him portrayed this way in "Titanic". It's fine to want an exciting plot for a blockbuster movie, but out of order to blacken the name of a man bravely trying to keep order in unimaginable circumstances.

Sam, I love your vids as you know and you really are a sweet guy but how on earth you ever thought you could fit all of this into 20 minutes I will never know 😛 On W serious note tho, I never knew Jack Phillips’ mental health went off, although I’m not one bit surprised. I feel really sad knowing that, poor guy. He’d been up all the previous night fixing the kit too so sheer mental exhaustion, not to mention physical, was probably a huge part of it. I always wondered why if they stuck together Harold survived and he didn’t make it. Jack’s mental state could go some way to explaining that.

Few things 1) Jack wasn't slept for more than 24 Hrs and finally he went into it forever , what an irony :( 2) Joseph bell & his team was a superhuman, those guys were in the most dangerous situation one can ever be, deep inside the Titanic 3) lastly to Sam, when you say hope you guys have enjoyed. Honestly I don't enjoy, rather I feel very very sad as your video progresses :( but it's good to know more about that night.

My uncle served on the Hood and explained to my father that a ship is like a small city crammed into an iron hull with as fancy a hotel as the shipbuilder could afford on top. Therefore, for the people operating this hotel/city, the ethos becomes one of: 'well if we can't fix the problem at least we can forestall the inevitable'; plus, they knew they wouldn't last in the freezing water anyway. The light was needed to evacuate the ship as well as keep it visible.

Maybe of the D deck Gangway door wasn't opened there would have been alot more time to launch more life boats. So in theory if the ship had more life boats and the D deck Gang way door wasn't opened, alot more than 18 would have been launched.

Re: They could not have launched more lifeboats than they did: The last starboard lifeboat (not counting the collapsibles) was launched at 1:41 am. The last port lifeboat (not counting collapsibles) was launched at 1:50 am. The last collapsible was launched from the davits at 2:05. The sea began sweeping over the boat deck at about 2:12. From 1:41 am on the starboard side until 2:12 you have thirty minutes. From 1:50 am on the port side until 2:12 you have twenty minutes. When you consider that four lifeboats (9 , 11, 13, 15) , had been launched from the starboard side between 1:30 and and 1:41, that is, within a period of ten minutes, and lifeboats 1, 3, 5, 7 on the starboard side had been launched within a span of 25 minutes, that seems to suggest that, _assuming that there had been enough crew remaining to help load and launch the boats_, more boats (had they existed) could have been launched, at least from the starboard side, in the last 30 minutes available before the boat deck began to flood. It also suggests that one or two more lifeboats (had they existed) could have been launched off the port side in the last twenty minutes, again, assuming that there had been enough crew to load and launch the boats, which there might not have been. Am I being totally unreasonable in thinking that, with 30 minutes to spare on the starboard side, and twenty minutes to spare on the port side, they might just have been able to get, say, two or even three more boats off the Titanic, had the boats been available and had there been enough crew?

Being genuine makes you a great storyteller of The facts of the Titanic, you do a fantastic job keep up the great work keep the stories coming also there was a video done about the pets that were all the Titanic and supposedly a passenger had put his wife and kid in the lifeboat and he went back and free the animals as well as his own could you see if there is any truth to that. love to hear about it

I think that if there were enough lifeboats for everyone onboard that MORE people would have died. I say that because I think that if the officers knew that every passenger had a seat in a lifeboat that they would have made an effort to fill the early lifeboats to capacity. Part of the reason that they got all the lifeboats away is alot of them were half full.
