    My "guess" would be that the majority of the damage was due to the break up itself. It would take a TREMENDOUS amount of stress to break all of that steel so it would have stretched and weakened badly. When it hit the bottom all of that part of the structure would deform because of the damaged steel. Your channel is AWESOME because you put so much research and yourself into it. It's another thing that make the Titanic sinking so unique, is the depth. The Britannic and Lusitania had already touched the bottom while they were still sinking. And if you look at the sinking of the Oceanos in 1991 the stern appears to rise and make its final plunge only to have the bow hit the sea floor with its stern sticking up for an extended period, until it eventually rolled over. No other big ship sank like the Titanic, gaining speed under water before it hit the bottom.

    I still like to think the 1929 Grand Banks Earthquake may have caused some damage to the aft part of the bow. It would be cool to think that as that was happening to the bow of the Titanic, up on the surface the Olympic was experiencing the violent motion of the water at the same time.

  • @aloysiusbelisarius9992

    @aloysiusbelisarius9992

    Жыл бұрын

    Indeed! I personally take much much more closely to the Olympic since I learned about her existence. I mean, when I first started reading about Titanic's history back in the '70s, I saw some passing references to the Olympic, but never any pictures or more elaborate details; for all I read it could have been just another ship, not a near-identical twin. Admittedly, all the over-romanticizing about Titanic did not help that much; it actually wasn't until about ten years or so ago that I learned Titanic was *not* the only ship of her kind made, not even the first. Olympic survived four ship collisions (one deliberate), a world war as a legitimate war target, a Poseidon-grade storm, *and* an earthquake/tsunami! The only thing to finally destroy her was the demolition yard...and somebody recently told me that they had a hard time breaking that hull up, having to resort to dynamite in order to break it up. God Himself could very easily have sunk *that* ship; He just chose not to.

    @@keithbrown8814 It's true. As a matter of fact, from what I read, White Star intentionally set Olympic's course over the same course Titanic took as a sort of commemoration/nostalgia route. It was a popular voyage, until the Depression all but killed the business.

    I still find it crazy that if it split at the surface that both major parts of the ship came to rest so close together despite the different ways they sank and went through the water so differently. The bow went straight like a plane and the stern sank flat and spun around as it fell to the floor.

  • @barcicada

    @barcicada

    Жыл бұрын

    They didn't, when she broke her back the bow went down on an angle and hit the bottom about half a mile from the bow. The stern went in a different direction, she was not in the site where she sunk that's why it took so long to find her. She went down two and a half miles, even a slight angle she would have travelled a fair distance.its also about time that they left her alone, 1600 souls died on her, now 5 more idiot's have lost their lives due to the Titanic obsession. Let them all rest in peace and let her rot away quietly in her own time. Everyone wants to get inside of her because of all the Jewellery and such like which is worth millions as you know. A dead ship is a dangerous place to venture, especially when you are trying to steal from her.

    I agree with everything but the shape of the “back part” of the bow section. If you compare the pictures from the first expeditions to the latest, you can see that this section has begun collapsing in on itself. The picture you’re looking at there is the latest visualization of the state of the wreck, while previous images showed those decks in tact and the slope much lower. While the impact undoubtedly caused some buckling, that sharp slope is the result of 110 years of slow structural collapse.

From my experience in Marine & Protective Coating, the actual "Top Coat Shades" of the RMS Titanic must have lasted ( Visible) for at least 20-25 years after sinking, in at least 5-10% Hull surface area for sure. This is applicable mostly Exteriors Surface due to more Protective nature of the exterior Paints. Interior painting is mostly for decorative purpose than protective... and so gone completely within first 5-10 years after sinking. Primer traces can be visible even now at few points inside and outside the Hull surface.

    New subscriber here! I started binging your content about a week ago. After an assignment I had to do for a project management class regarding the Titanic. We were giving a case study and had to talk about design issues, do a risk matrix, talk about why it sank, and why so few people survived. We couldn't use any other sources. Just the 13 page case study they provided. They didn't get anything wrong. But my goodness, after watching your videos, they omitted a lot of crucial and interesting details. If I could have used you as a source, my assignment would have been very different. Things they ommited - the gang way door escalated the sinking - the coal fire balanced out the boat for a while - that fact that they launched all the boats was a miracle. I appreciate all your content. Titanic and other. Thank you for all you do.

    I'm not a fan of the theory that the mast bounced on the bridge. With an estimated speed of sinking of 30 to 40 mph I don't see how it could have bounced around. The mast would have been pinned to the bridge in my opinion.

    Yes it would have it very likely would have slammed down right through it obliterating the bridge entirely

    I can only see it being pinned if the bow was sinking almost vertical or upside down, makes sense to me that it could have kept slamming around but it requires quite a downwards angle for the bow

  • @andrewmeyer4606
    @andrewmeyer4606 Жыл бұрын

    Also don't forget the intense pressures of the deep ocean that may have had something to do with the way the aft section of the bow looked like as well. Both the breakup, the downdraft, as well as all of that massive preasure after leaving the surface.

    The bow was equalized as it left the surface. That means there's a net pressure of zero.

    Just completely NIT, I'd personally call properties of an object moving in water hydrodynamic rather than aerodynamic. Anyway, I really like your fresh and passionate approach to the classical subject, really good job.

    I agree. I find that sinking to be very fascinating, and sad. The percentage of passengers who died was higher than on the Titanic, though the Empress was smaller, and the raw number of deaths was fewer.

    @paulburley7993: 100 years? Perhaps some of the debris field will be left but projections are the ship will no longer exist in recognizable form in much less time than that.

    Hey Sam! I'm a new subscriber. Really enjoying your channel. How do you know that the rear portion of the bow section wasn't damaged on the ocean surface when the stern broke off? As an example, take an empty soda can and bend it in half. The middle flattens out. Isn't it possible that when the Titanic broke in half, that section immediately on one or both sides of the break stretched or distorted before separating rather than a clean break like breaking a potato chip in half? That seems more probable to me than down forces from hitting the ocean floor. But hey...I'm certainly no expert. Just thinking out loud.

    As metal expands due to heat it bends. The segment of the boat where the engine was split after water damaged and stalled the lit boilers. The steamy air heated the metal and the nose tore away from the rest of the boat.
