Possible video idea: You could discuss how effective the Californian could have hypothetically been in assisting in the rescue if they had investigated, and perhaps the difficulties that the vessel would have faced in trying to save people. Great job on this one, btw.

Even if the Californian answered the distress call, it would have been pointless. As it had stopped for the night, the boiler pressure would have been way too low to get underway. You would have to wake the stokers to get to work asap, get the boiler pressure up to minimum pressure to start moving at slow speed. On top of that, even if you had a clear path, it would take 3-4 hours to get there. If there is ice, longer. So if everything ran smoothly, with a 0100 hours start time for the boilers to be bought to minimum pressure, the ship would arrive between 0400-0500 hours. All you would be doing is fishing bodies out of the water, and rescuing survivors from the life boats.
@alainrobillard4300

Interesting "what if" suggestion! As the Californian was surrounded by ice, it is not clear if she could have reached the Titanic before the sinking. To save all the passengers, a rescue boat has to be there early. To recover the passengers in the lifeboats, for allowing them to return empty to the Titanic for more rescue takes time. I don't think everybody could have left the Titanic in time to avoid a bath. Rescuing them from the freezing water should then be a race against hypothermia. IMO, the Californan could have saved more passengers, but not so much.
You have had your channel for 6 months and you are doing better than people who have had their channel for YEARS. I really appreciate you trying your hardest to teach people about history. keep up the good work!
I agree that even though the crew on the Californian didn't understand what was going on with Titanic, they could have done more such as gone over to investigate
@Dan_Ben_Michael
3 жыл бұрын
I agree they don’t deserve to be vilified as it’s easy to look back with hindsight and the benefit of the knowledge of what happened. As for going over to investigate, it might’ve been a case of blindly steaming over there on a wild goose chase and then they would’ve wasted time and possibly risked their lives in an ice field only to find out the ship was fine or gone off on towards their destination. I do think they could’ve at least woken up the wireless operator just to make sure everything was alright. The decision not to wake the wireless operator was probably something that haunted the Californian’s captain for the rest of his life.
@thunderjet4294
3 жыл бұрын
I belive when they shut down the Californian for the night they would have let off all most all steam pressure other than the stand by 60psi required to operate the generators on board this being said that ship required 190 psi of steam to operate at full speed. And would have taken about an hour and a half stoaking all the boilers on board to reach minimum operating pressure of 135 psi which would allow about 4kts of speed for a short distance the crew on board would have woken up about 3hrs before dawn and started heating the boilers on board to a full head of steam for when the capitan gave the go ahead signal. So even if she could have seen and talked to the titanic likely she would have not been able to complete a rescue
@Dan_Ben_Michael
3 жыл бұрын
@@thunderjet4294 That’s very interesting. I did not know that. I always thought it was harsh to critique the captain and crew seeing as they had limited information and were stopped for the night because of heavy ice flows, not to mention it was a dark night and visibility was poor, but learning that puts a whole new dimension on it as well. I still believe they should’ve woken the wireless operator but for all I know what they saw that night mightn’t have been unusual, even it were uncommon and thought whatever was going on was fine. It’s very easy to say in hindsight what the right course of action is so I wouldn’t wish to pass judgement on the captain and crew of the Californian.
@paulboger7377
3 жыл бұрын
@@thunderjet4294 , that is correct. The steam pressure was insufficient to get underway. Even if they did realise the ship was in trouble, by the time they got the crew awake, all the stokers shovelling the coal, and had a clear path to Titanic, you are looking at 3-4 hours minimum to reach the location.

Hey Sam. Thanks for all your videos. I have some info on that D-Deck Shell Door. Its in a museum recovered from the wreak in 1998? In the big salvage expedition/exploration of the site. A member on a Facebook forum page fan site on Titanic mentioned that he was at the wreak in the French submarine Nautile. Shooting footage of the hull with Robin the ROV. They actually caught the doors hinges rusting free and it falling to the seafloor in front of the sub. They said it scared the hell out of them.

My new fav sub. Got twitter?
Hi Sam, contrary to your assertion that Titanic was not out to break any kind of record, I have just watched an interview with Frank Prentice a surviving crew member, who stated that due to the calm conditions they WERE trying to get some kind of record time crossing, just thought I'd let you know! The interview is on KZread from 1983
Love this channel. Btw, are you from the THG as well? Been seeing parts of their Titanic real time sinking simulation in your vids.
I would concur with your thoughts on the Californian, indeed she had sent ice warnings to the Titanic. So I too think it was unjust the way the Californian was vilified after the disaster . Also, as a result of the tragedy, wireless stations on all vessels around the world, were manned 24 hours a day from then on.
It’s easy to blame the crew of the Californian in hindsight. I guess the best course of action is to try and contact them via wireless, as Sam said. Again, with hindsight it makes sense but also it seems so obvious to me to make sure that it’s not an emergency. Better to be safe than sorry.
My theory for the D Deck door is that the men went down to open the door right? They opened the door, and then saw the water very close and quickly shut it. Because of the fact they shut it so quickly, the door either was not locked, or even closed correctly. They listing from Scotland Road and the small amount of water going through the door, caused the ship to basically lean so much the door kind of fell open letting a large amount of water in and starting to greatly accelerate the sinking
I also read that the "mystery ship" was a ship possibly illegally hunting seals. It is a book from DK Eyewitness... "Titanic". The crew probably didn't want to get found out and that is why they never came to the Titanic's rescue.
You would be a good instructor. An idea for a new video; what maritime laws that were changed by the Titanic sinking. Was the sending of fake sos calls punishable? Round the clock monitoring of the morse code rooms? Disaster drills etc.. Also what changed in ship construction? Not what we know but what did those at the time think was the primary reason why the Titanic sank that influenced ship construction changes.
Love all of your videos! Really enjoy the just-the-facts presentation style! Out of curiosity to your Mystery Ship being the Californian theory, what do you make of the accounts from the Titanic that the ship had later sailed out of sight? Was this the Californian steadily switching off its lights as the evening progressed, another iceberg floating between the line-of-sight of the two or some atmospheric affect? The Californian had earlier radioed that they were stopped for the night due to the ice flow. Is there any account that they later got under way before sunrise? I haven't heard much of the Californian's story from at evening. Love the insights! Maybe it's discussed somewhere else, but was the Californian 10 miles away from the Titanic's reported coordinates or its wreck coordinates?
Denial amongst people experiencing an emergency is extremely common.

I think you should do a video on MTS Oceanos.
Ive always thought a Titanic cruise would be a great idea. Starting in Balfast and following her route she took to her final port of call Queenstown.
Thank-you once again for a magnificent lesson. After this, could you do video of the conspiracy theories, and attempts to find the ship, including Jack Grimm's circus!
Captain Lord should really have woken his wireless operator to find out if there was any distress calls on the air when the rockets were being launched.
The D deck door is no longer in the ship. It fell off sometime ago, and has now been recovered, and restored, I think
While I understand the factors at play in regards to people’s reasoning for not boarding the early boats, to me, it would be more of a reason to go than to stay. No one would randomly wake up 2,200 people in the middle of the night, just for the sake of having a boat drill. If I’m being told to leave the ship at 12:45 am, in the middle of the ocean, to me that signals that something is seriously wrong with the ship.
Whatever the crew of the Californian was guilty of, imagine knowing that you saw your mystery ship on the horizon and then realizing the times and behavior you saw match-up exactly with the Titanic sinking. It's one of those things you remember forever. Haunting.
This answers a lot of questions and I mean A LOT of questions, Its funny how things line up though Also I don't know what you meant when you said "company signals"
If you've seen "Secrets of the Titanic" they show that the D-deck gangway door was in opened and was still open even after she sank.
YOU ARE WELCOME
Can u do a tier list of all titanic knowing people?
I missed the stream ;(. But I bet it’s a good video (I’ve just started)
I just watched a video of 4th officer Boxhall's account of the sinking . He was sent on the 1st lifeboat and was ordered by Capt. Smith to row around the ship to a gangway. He did this and it was open with people standing in it but it was high above the water and he feared that if people jumped toward the boat they would swamp it.
In my opinion, the crew of the Californian was affected by the false horizon just like the Titanic's crew with the iceberg. They could see a ship, but the false horizon deceived them into thinking the ship they were seeing was a small ship, not the largest liner in the world.
Capt Lord of the California, always maintained he didn't know the RMS Titanic was in distress

May be that is a “fact” officer Murdoch took into consideration before he ordered hard a starboard
I,totally agree, with all that was going on the other ship should’ve at least tried to contact Titanic ( or whatever ship they thought it might be ).
Another thing to note is that apparently some time before Titanic struck the berg the telegraph operators told the Californian to 'shut up'.
The man you’re referring to was Alfred “Big Neck” Nichols who was the Boatswain of the Titanic. And the men he took down with him have never been identified
I always feel like i have seen you in some movie, may be Harry Potter, but i feel i have seen you in any movie.
i agree it the californan
I have a theory for the gangway door. Lightoler send some mens to open the door. The door is just below lifeboat 6, but no one on the lifeboat saw the door open, and I think the mens arrived at the door after lifeboat 6 was lowered. I think they oppened it, left the door, and going back. I think the reason they didn't reported to Lightoler is because they where called somewhere else, as one of the seamens(Nicholls) send there was seen after the incident on the starboard side. Then the water came to D deck and water began entering to the door
It's my understanding that the lifeboats were rated for worse case scenarios of all passengers being large sailors and the boats being in rough seas. With most women (and even men) weighing less and taking less room (not to mention the children) and the ocean being calm, they could've put even more people in those lifeboats, assuming they had the time and will to do so.
Here's a little morsel for you to ponder - the water-tight bulkheads only went up to e-deck, but what if the compartments had been sealed across the tops so that air could not get out, effectively creating a bouyancy chamber. Would Titanic have been able to continue her journey with all 6 compartments breeched? Food for thought.
@timothyreed8417

There would have to be “air locks” somewhere to let the crew in and out and and to let the passengers move about the ship.
I do wonder, if the Californian / if the mystery ship, would have responded to Titanics distress calls, how much of an impact could they have made. The Californian / the mystery ship appeared to be a small vessel, with only very limited passenger space. Besides the official passenger allowance on the Californian, How much overcapacity could a vessel like the Californian have taken on, in the attempt to save as many people as possible? And at which point of the sinking could she have arrived. It's a wild guess but I'm assuming that the vessels of that time can't go "full ahead" in one moment to another, especialy when idling. Surely it must have taken time even though it was the closest ship in the area. Anyhow, keep up your amazing content.
Captain Lord's reaction to what his crew saw reminds me of a recent experience with an old fuddy duddy. I sent him an e-mail. He promptly printed it out and dictated a letter to his secretary, which she sent to me by First Class Mail.
Wonderful job again Sam! I agree with you on your feelings about the Californian. And I believe you're correct, in all their confusion they probably should have woke up their wireless operator... But our hindsight is always 20/20. Looking forward to part 3... And as a side note my Grandfather was able to see Titanic... He kept telling everyone that the great ship was going to sink, but people just ignored him! He wouldn't be dissuaded so he started to raise his voice even louder and louder, "Titanic is going to Sink!" Then all of a sudden the people finally had him.... Thrown out of the theater! Bwahahahaa! 🤪 🤣🤣🤣 Sorry Sam... I just couldn't resist!
I’ve always been curious to know what would have happened if another ship had arrived in time. How would they have transferred the passengers exactly? How would they have have enough time to get the additional lifeboats over? And how would they have avoided the same concern about people possibly swamping the boats? Video please!
Hey I like your shirt. Where did you get it?
