Into the Midnight Zone: Secrets of the Ocean Void

The Deep Sea Midnight Zone | Worlds of the Deep, a collaboration with Schmidt Ocean Institute. Thank you to Brilliant for sponsoring Natural World Facts 🧠💡 - for a 30-day free trial and 20% off an annual premium subscription visit brilliant.org/NaturalWorldFacts/
In the deep ocean, life is divided between very different worlds. In the midwater, pelagic wanderers tread migratory routes that span entire oceans, and planktonic drifters and their predators take part in bioluminescent light shows. It is separated into zones based on depth, including the sunlight zone (epipelagic), twilight zone (mesopelagic), midnight zone (bathypelagic), abyssal and hadal zones. And below, lies the deep sea floor. A kingdom of mud and ooze, where sessile creatures cling to any solid outcrop and corals craft kingdoms on the seamount crusts. The worlds of the deep sea could not be more different, and yet their stories are fundamentally intertwined. In this episode, we delve into the Midnight Zone, a pitch-black zone of the deep sea where life has found peculiar ways to survive the immense pressure, from anglerfish to vampire squid to giant sharks.

Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a non-profit oceanographic research foundation that has been pioneering deep-sea research and discovery since 2009, on board their old vessel RV Falkor and their new RV Falkor (too). Their remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is equipped with a suite of sensors and a 4K camera that has illuminated the depths and live-streamed dives around the world. Most footage shown is filmed and provided by SOI. Huge thank you to them for contributing their footage, and working with me to create this series! Check out their website: schmidtocean.org/

It’s a great point! And the answer is probably quite a lot of them! Same for the lights - the ones we do see tend to be animals that are actually drawn in and attracted by the bright lights, they find them mesmerising (and undoubtedly blinding, at least short-term). But not all deep sea animals will be lured in, there are likely many that are ultra skittish, speedy, and wary of any lights or vibrations, and we would simply have no way of knowing! One approach to finding them could be suspended baited camera traps with dim red lights (often hard for animals to perceive). It would be a fascinating study! They’ve done something similar with pulsating lights mirroring the bioluminescence of Atolla jellyfish to lure in giant squid, and it was quite successful!!

@@NaturalWorldFactsLeo, I could write SO MUCH about what I loved about this film.. so this may be a long reply.. 😁 I thought it was wonderful how you started with, _"Below the shimmering surface,"_ showing clips of whales and fish.. and then immediately took us down further into the darkness, explaining everything with great clarity, including a brief return to the twilight zone.. This approach definitely holds people's attention! Which parts did I enjoy the most? To be honest, *everything!* We all have our favourite creatures.. I am particularly fascinated by anglers, siphonophores (43:00 fantastic footage and explanation of these bizarre organisms), comb jellies and other bioluminescent creatures.. from 8:00, for example, the footage of these jellies using their tentacles was exceptional.. but I could point out countless similar moments! I also noticed additional special little sound effects which fit perfectly with each different clip and added to the viewing enjoyment.. and the music was perfect! 16:55, for example, the way you related so clearly about "ultra blackness" and melanin.. and then taking the viewer back for a moment to the stark contrast of the twilight zone.. Even though life in the abyss is a complicated affair, your explanation was so clear and easy to follow.. It was also a great idea to appear in person at the end.. at 49:30 we are dragged out of the abyss and can take a big breath of air and hear bird song back on land.. 😀 It was a great way to bring us "back to earth.." 👍 This was an hour of sheer fascination for me, with everything explained simply and clearly.. you have no need to worry about your future, Leo.. because it's clear you were BORN to do this! I found this channel not long after you had reached 7K subs and I remember watching some of your very first videos.. an enthusiastic 10-year-old with the confidence and passion to make wildlife videos! I knew then that you were destined for great things.. ✊ You are still a young fiIm maker, a university graduate.. yet I don't believe I have *EVER* watched a more professional, explanatory and satisfying documentary about the sea! I could write a LOT more 😆 but suffice to say.. this was absolutely BRILLIANT work and I am full of admiration.. Well done! 👏👍🙋🏻‍♀️🥳

My god, the quality of these videos are second to none. When I see a new video emerge on my KZread feed I get so excited. All other documentaries that get recommended to me are almost always recycled clips that I've mostly seen before and no where near as awe inspiring. I've never seen creatures like these before and it's like seeing a new alien world watching these videos. I can't wait for the next!

Dear Leo, what a wondrous, alien poetry you have given us. So many amazing emotions emerge within me. Since this is such a rare view, I yet again feel child-like wonder which might be otherwise elusive (yet still very much possible) walking the known world "above". Sharp gratefulness for being a part of this Earth. Amazement, humility, awe. Truly a special experience. Thank you!

Beautifully done. As always, your narration is so well paced and one of my favorite things about your videos. Your choice of footage is excellent, your editing top-notch, your sounds design is phenomenal! It's very clear how hard you worked on this, and your very real passion for science and for nature shines through in every line of the script. With excellence like this as our reward, 11 months is not too long to wait!! Eager to see what you do next!
