    Great explanation of how the weight of the engine counteracted the flooding of the bow, slowing the sinking and ultimately causing the hull to break in two. Not something many people knew. RIP all those on the Titanic -- and great job, Sam-- you've done invaluable, great work in helping a new generation understand the scale and human dimensions of this tragedy.

    16:08 The part that is specifically taking the strain is the keel, or the spine of the ship. The double bottom is just a description of how the keel is designed. This is the strongest part of the ship at the bottom, which is designed to support the ship in dry dock. That is why it took so long for the keel to finally separate in that section. It is literally what holds the whole ship together. Nearly all ships are built from the keel up for this very reason.

  • @jakemillar649

    @jakemillar649

    2 жыл бұрын

    Most ships were built like this at the time. Now a lot of ships are made in sections to speed up production. The Liberty cargo ships for example were made like this, and many broke in half due to weaknesses at the joins. Good points in your comment.

  • @billvanek5570

    @billvanek5570

    I believe that the keel was the first thing to break, because, as you said, it was the strongest part, holding the ship together. Not until it overloaded and broke would the rest of the ship break up. I think the two keel sections buckled downward at frame 25 (beneath Boiler Room 1), resembling an upside-down drawbridge as they folded out from the bottom of the ship. I used the word "buckled" in the engineering sense: I think the failure mode was Euler buckling, following the Johnson parabolic curve for non-slender beams (which the massive keel was). Immediately following the loss of the keel, the stern would start sagging relative to the bow, shattering the hull on each side, smashing the hull axially frame by frame for about 3 frames' worth (it would have sounded like separate explosions, in sequence), and also axially smashing the lower bulkheads and decks (decks G, F, and E, and possibly D). Thayer: "Now, without warning, she seemed to start forward, moving forward and into the water at an angle of about 15 degrees. This movement, with the water rushing up toward us was accompanied by a rumbling roar, mixed with more muffled explosions. It was like standing under a steel railway bridge while an express train passes overhead, mingled with the noise of a pressed steel factory and wholesale breakage of china." All of that low-down activity would have caused the superstructure to overload in tension, and it would have snapped open one deck at a time in rapid succession, sounding like a series of gunshots, and would have looked as if it had been cut with a knife just forward of the 3rd funnel. Mr. Ward: "She gave a kind of sudden lurch forward, and I heard a couple of reports, reports more like a volley of musketry than anything else. You would not exactly call them a heavy explosion. It did not seem to me like an explosion at all." But the ship would not have parted at that first breaking; it would still be held together by the hull and inner decks at levels B and C for sure, and possibly D.

    I think it’s amazing that the crew especially after they had no lifeboat drill earlier that day even though one was scheduled did a wonderful job in getting all of the lifeboats that were on board the ship using the davits launched. Also 700 or so people got saved. Now when you consider the loss of life was just over 1500 that is unthinkable and very sad. But if titanic had sank like the Lusitania in about 15 minutes instead of 2 hours and 40 minutes, consider how much worse the loss of life could have been then. To see such a beautiful ship sink on her maiden voyage is very sad for me. But all those poor people that lost their lives in it makes me sadder. Such a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided

    The book The Story of The Wreck of The Titanic which was published in 1912, included primary accounts from survivors who stated that there were shootings (though very few) of passengers trying to rush lifeboats, and if memory serves one witness stated that he was certain that Murdoch did indeed shoot himself just prior to the final plunge, right after the final collapsible was cut away from the davits. I tend to go with this myself, as Murdoch was partly to blame for the sinking being in charge of navigation while Capt. Smith had retired to his private quarters, and having not ordered the central/rudder screw to full ahead which would have allowed the ship to turn tighter. He must have been aware of this after the collision - he must have felt tremendous guilt as the sheer scale of the disaster unfolded.

This just isn't ours to know. I also wouldn't blame him for the Titanic sinking simply because of the circumstances that particular April. The ice was further south than usual, it was generating a false horizon, the seas were flat calm, and the biggest issue being there was no moon at all. The entire tragedy was a worst-case scenario no one could plan for or even imagine. It was a perfect storm of factors that we may never see again. We still lose ships today and the threat of ice is still very real but we've come a long way in terms of safety and equipment.

So ashamed was she that he had survived when others did not.

    If you wanted to add anything to Episode 6 you might follow the two pieces of the ship all the way to the bottom. Then, finally, the last resting place of the ship has come about.

    To think the costa Concordia lost her power seconds after she hit these rocks and the titanic lights stayed ON literally seconds before she sunk.

  • @25Erix

    @25Erix

    I think the reason is how both ships were damaged. Titanic had a series of buckled plates which let the water in relatively slow and even after the split, her emergency power wasn't underwater, letting it kick in until the very end. Concordia, for all intents and purposes, was gored on rocks. I wouldn't be surprised if the area of the ship that struck the rocks was where the power generator was. Either way, I'd hate to be on either ship when the lights go out. Probably was far worse on Concordia because you're trapped inside in utter darkness.

    It'd be great to see a video about previous attempts to find the wreck. There are a lot of videos about Robert Ballard finding it, but not a lot about previous missions.

    Always enjoyed your content. I got into the Titanic in 1979 with SOS Titanic when I was seven years old. I joined the Titanic Historical Society soon after. Luckily I was present at the 1987 THS convention in Wilmington, Delaware where I met Robert Ballard with his new pictures of the Titanic wreck. I also met 7 survivors and Walter Lord. I have always enjoyed all new information concerning the Titanic and you do a great job of introducing the subject to many people. Many kudos.

    I learned recently that once the stern went under, witnesses said in the pitch dark they could hear the Titanic imploding as it sank to the bottom.

  • @25Erix

    @25Erix

    They definitely heard something but at the time, they weren't sure. There was conflicting testimony in both inquiries where survivors couldn't agree about the ship splitting in two. I'd like to think that the wreck's discovery in 1985 vindicated everyone who ever said she sank in two. The fact the stern is a well-known mangled hellscape puts an image to the sound they heard way back then.

    Sam, you did an amazingly fantastic job. It's been a total pleasure to watch and I will keep following and watching, imma looking forward to next April x Well to me even though you all may think it as daft but James Camerons 1997 Titanic got me through a very bad time in my life, in October of 1998 I suffered a very bad bad RTA left in a coma for a month and in hospital for the next 2 years, loving Titanic parents brought me in my video cassette of Titanic which I watched constantly "even breaking the first due to over use" hahaha, can't wait to see the entire story in one.
