The Real Reason That I Hate Kenya (#74)

It was my last day in Kenya, and it was time to be honest. I had to speak my mind. There were some things that the world really needed to know about the country, and I was going to be the man to tell them. I decided to do this during a casual walk around Westlands, and then later on a not so casual insane rushed drive to the airport to catch my flight out. It ended up being quite a day.

I lived in Kenya for four years back in the day. I remember my dad was reposted to Brussels in our second year but we stayed there because... why not? Great country, great people and way underpriced commodities (give you an example- the house we lived in in Kenya would probably have cost around $9,000-$10,000 a month to rent in DC where we lived b4: in Kenya, only $3,000 a month. Bread cost like 40 cents and last time I visited in 2018, the mobile plans were crazy cheap and my phone actually had service in a FRIKEN' ELAVATOR! *lookin at you T-Mobile*). Every time I tell people about my experiences in the country, they ask me where I got the nutsack to go to CNN's self-coined 'terror hotbed'. I dunno why but I take that personally and I ain't even Kenyan. Honestly, when I get the money and freedom- I probably will go back to raise my family there because... Why not? Kenya really is a great country and just needs to dust-up its government: if that is done, pretty sure we'll be looking at a Singapore in Africa by 2040.

What impresses me the most about your videos is not just how you're willing to go and speak with the locals (in whichever country you seem to visit) but how you do your best to speak with them in their own language. You've taken the time and considerable effort to do more than expect them to speak English, which, in my humble opinion, gives you better access and insight to those travels. Respect.

America has all the same issues, some of our streets look like very rugged and unkempt. The one difference I think America has, is the corruption. If you had corruption by gov't officials happen against you, you have many recourse. But cross into Mexico and it's completely different. You can't trust any of their police, you don't know if they are on cartel payrolls or not. American police aren't perfect but they are leaps ahead of nearly every other country of our population size and amount of dense cities. Especially in terms of corruption. Use of force is 99% appropriate but there is many interactions and many people and some unsettling events are bound to surface on the internet and be replayed relentlessly. I like Kenya and plan to visit

I live in Kenya & my soon-to-be wife is Kenyan. I'm from the UK. I had the same feelings before going to Africa (first went to Tanzania) & its embarrassing, even for a liberal minded guy to be totally wrong about my expectations. When they talk about developed countries they mean wealth - if was based on crime, murder, drug abuse, corruption etc. then both the UK (& also most of Europe) & the USA would be the most underdeveloped countries on the planet. Thank you for making & sharing these videos, & painting an accurate, respectful picture of Kenya. Kenya isn't without its problems: neither are our countries. But Kenyans at least haven't forgot to smile. Take care

In terms of per capita income Botswana, Namibia, Seychelles, and Mauritius rank higher than Kenya. Kenya, just like any capitalist nation is disadvantaged by high inequality. Kenya is unique, we have tribalism and of course leadership with funny priorities. We can do better as a country. Am a proud Kenyan. Thank you Tommy for your visit to Kenya Stay safe. A friend even joked that one would be forgiven to imagine either Tommy and I were acquaintances, or that I was sure we'd meet and he'd arknowledge me somehow. .. sadly we didn't even meet. .. but it was still fun to see my country through his lens .. great vlog!
