Point 1: Good luck finding a nice attractive original untouched vintage Ed White, with correct bracelet and end-links, at this price point. Point 2 : If you did your research (hint : Nasa Archives), you would see in old color pics of these watches 105.003/2998 etc with tritium/radium, that indeed new tritium/radium was off-white to begin with...there's NO FAUX BRO. Its actually bang-on. Point 3 : If one follows the market for prices of vintage Speedmasters (its clear you don't, and that is ok :) ), the 'Moonwatch' as you know it, is priced lower than the EW (for same condition). It would appear Omega take the vintage market prices into account when pricing these, and thus it appears clear that a reissued 'Moonwatch' would thus cost less than than this (but not by much).

Great watch, love the nod to Ed White and the sapphire case back as the movement is so good to look at, price well yes its a bit high but look at what you are paying for, a brand new 321 movement, a tribute to the history of the Speedmaster and the links to NASA and the space missions, oh and a 5 year guarantee, try getting that on a 50+ year old vintage watch. As for your hope that there will be a 'Moonwatch with the 321 well sorry to disappoint but that will not happen as there simply isn't enough movements to go round, the new Speedmaster movement will be the 3861 which was launched in the Apollo 11 50th watches and will be in the A13 50th later this year. Also, please stop complaining about Omega's missed opportunities, the A11 50th, sold out, what's wrong with that? The 321 is back and available in SS or Platinum. The 1861 will be discontinued this year and replaced with the 3861.

Very timely. I was researching this new Omega release today and your video came along just in time. I thought Omega’s release was exactly what I was waiting for. It almost is. But your comments are spot on. Nevertheless, I like this watch a lot (except for the price, which is quite high) and appreciate finally seeing this center column wheel movement in a steel case.

The whole point of the watch is that Omega chose this reference to model their first (new) steel-encased 321 reference. Aside from the 1005.003 being a perfect candidate for their 321, they had decided to use Gene Cernan's own 105.003 to model the new movement ...literally. We're talking about the use of tomography in order to replicate every single part on a 1-1 basis. In any event, a reference associated with astronauts White & Cernan will certainly make for a perfect Speedmaster to house Omega's 321! While Speedmaster fans will forever associate the 105.003 with White's EVA, it's also important to note that it is one of three references to have been on the moon's surface. Last but certainly not least, the 105.003 was the first to be "flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions"! Transcript from Travelller over on Omega Forum. Spot on I’d say.

I commented on your previous video about Omega and, if I don't remember badly, I was almost spot on. I think I wrote that a 321 Moonwatch would have potentially damaged sales for Omega on the long run because people on the street would have missed the difference with the previous model and thus desirability would have not increased. But now they show some genius: no way to mistake this watch for the previous model! Size will be perfect for the actual trend of smaller watches, it's vintage inspired (let's say like Oris Sixty-five or Tudor BB 58), it has a history of his own and a mythical movement. And it looks fabulous! On the previous video you complained that Omega still looking over the fence to Rolex's yard and here you're served: overpriced wonderful watch with old technology but high pedigree. I'm not sure that Omega will go through the entire AD drama, but to me it's clear that the Swatch group wants Omega to be on par with Rolex. It would give them the added advantage to free up some market segment to revive -hopefully- the Zenith brand. I should probably buy a Moonwatch as soon as possible, because I can foresee Omega list prices to go up and up an up...

@A. B. I'm sure you're right, but it doesn't show. Apart from the Sky-dweller and the Yacht-Master II they have no complications and they're still charging for a day-date complication that you can find in any watch. They're pretty accurate, but they are not the only ones: my Hamilton Khaki with a basic ETA runs within Rolex specifications. There's no doubt that my Khaki it's very lucky but it proves that you don't need rocket science to build an accurate mechanism. Rolex are well made, but not on par with any real high end piece, like Lange or Patek. From a design standpoint they are stuck in the 60's: still the most iconic watches you can find and I would totally buy an old Sub or an Explorer, but everything they did in the last years was "select"->"resize" and with less than elegant results. If I have to really find any innovation I would say the Rolesor league and some nice clasps. If they put a LOT of money on that they seriously need to fire someone in the R&D department. But I'd love to be proven wrong: if you can tell me something more I'm glad to learn.

If you’ve spent 14k on a sub or gmt master II then it seems misplaced to complain about the price tag of this piece... I think they nailed it. Seems like everyone complains about the new Omega pricing bc the older models were such a steal in comparison to Rolex pricing. I’d be much more excited to see this piece on someone’s wrist than your common Rolex and maybe Omega stops overproducing their models which will create the higher value retention. It’s easier to spend this price if it retains its value on the secondary market..that’s for damn sure.

2:10 Just to clarify, both CK2998 (aka 1st Omega in space) and Speedmaster Pro (aka moonwatch) measure 39.7mm bezel to bezel. Omega designate the Pro as 42mm because it includes the crown guard. Go to a dealer and try both on side by side, you won't find the Pro wearing any larger than CK2998.

  • @marcingodyn3740

It certainly is the price increase when compared to the 1861 Moonwatch, but it seems much more reasonable due to the movement and especially when you compare to the same movement [or similar] in the much more expensive luxury watches. Also bear in mind “The movement is plated in Sedna gold. Note that these Calibre 321s are produced in a dedicated department in Biel, assembled and adjusted by hand by a single watchmaker. As such, don’t expect the same level of production as the classic Calibre 1861.” The materials are much stronger, the hand made assembly and adjustment, sedna gold used, investment in dedicated department and tools etc. For me is expensive but I see the reason. And finally, please do not mention the Rolex - they are doing nothing when comparing to OMEGA. Maybe OMEGA did some mistakes but at least they are innovating and doing a lot of great things. Rolex is marketing only. You are the Rolex fan - ok, but please do not criticize other brands for doing good things. If, in your opinion it is too expensive, do not buy it. Many people will do. You are not objective in your materials, sorry to say that. For more information about 321 please see monochrome-watches.com/omega-speedmaster-moonwatch-321-stainless-steel-ed-white/

I don't think Omega have made bad mistakes over the past few years as you put in your video. Yes we all want the Speedmaster with a 321 movement in steel. You may think they should have put in the 50th moon watch.. They where never going to do that. They would have lost sales. They sold every 50th moon watch and its gone up in value. why because it was a stunning watch and there where more people wanting it than the numbers. This new Ed white .. will not be the last 321 .. the 42 mm one will come and it will be £14- 15,000, I predict. why.. There will be a waiting list for the new ed white of at least 2 - 3 year by the end of this year Why. because they will limit the numbers and there will be enough people in the world willing to pay the price. As people are daft enough to keep buying Rolexs at inflated prices due the the company limiting the numbers they produce. regards. Dave

Having a watch that is built like it was when it first came out decades ago definitely carries a nostalgic vibe to it but...its not practical, which is why I would never buy one. Modern pieces are far superior to the watches of the past but yet so many people want them. When I first learned about the speedmaster I wanted one too but after my Hamilton field watch got magnetized I knew I had to do some homework. So I did and I ended up getting myself a DSotM in vintage black. Aside from the under the radar aesthetics: the new upgraded movement, the antimagnetism and the longevity upgrades that came with the watch are what sold me. I didnt pay the full price because I got it on jomashop but I still paid a hefty price for it and honestly 2 years later I think it was worth it, I wear it everyday. And for Omega to come out and pull a stunt like this charging $1k more on retail than a DSotM is completely obsurd! What were they thinking? Idiots! They obviously have selective hearing if the only thing they heard on the other video from the timeless watch channel was "make a throw back and and charge $1k more". SMH. They could have had people forming a line to buy a watch like this, and been making a ton of cash, had they done the job right form the get go. In my opinio they should be charging between 4.5k to 6k for this watch to get the attention that they want it to get. They need to clean up house in upper managment.

Far too high price. That's not far off the retail cost of an aquanaut, how much hand finishing are they giving you? I can see a bit of anglage.

9:01 Well.. there is the cost of, essentially, recreating the 321 mechanism production line as well as, probably, redesigning the mechanism to go into a modern production process etc. They need to recover the costs for all that and at the same time continue selling the other mechanisms so it has to be a limited production run and thus a high price watch for very few collectors. It is the Omega fans that asked for the 321 in the first place so Omega obliged. It is not the other way around. Whether it makes sense to buy it, well one has to ask themselves why they are buying a mechanical watch n the first place and what they expect from it and then take it from there. But all the points brought up in the video are valid and one should take them into consideration before buying this Speedmaster or any other Speedmaster for that matter.

I think Yr Comments are, as always, Spot-On. This is just A Rippoff. WHY do Omega do this Faux Patina Schtik? The 321 movement is a Fossil. It beats at 18K P.H. is not particularly accurate & HEY! The Precious Column-Wheel does not reset with the 100% accuracy the 861/1861 does. My Watchmaker was Right on The Money when he said; "Resurrecting the 321 movement is like Resurrecting Lazurus wth a Triple Bypass!" And WHY do it with Sapphires? AAAAARRRRRGHHH! A feature of the standard solid-case Omega Moonwatch IS- The soft-iron anti-magnetic cap, which sits on top of the movement when the caseback is removed. With the Sapphire Sandwich, they don't use this! I have owned/own 4 Speedmasters. The 861 is/was the BEST Speedmaster movement. This is just A Ca$h-Cow Show-Pony!

List of Omega Moonwatches apart from other chronographs 1) cal.1863 with Hesalite crystal, 2) cal. 1863 with sapphire, 3) Cal. 9300, 4) cal. 321 remake, 5) the infinite other limited editions Rolex has 1 Daytona in few configurations, Rolex never looks back to churn money from the designs of yesteryear, and their current caliber and design are always the best they had so far. I used to love Omega when I started my watch collecting journey but now I have so much respect for what Rolex does, it is more than just marketing.

Great video. I have a question. Why we see brands such as Omega, Patek and Audermars Piguet investing and launching time pieces with Turbillion movements, moon phase movements and Rolex, probably the most wanted brand, is not investing on complex models like those? Of course that we have the Sky Dweller, with an amazing movement. But it seems nothing compared with the other brands. Thanks a lot

This is a luxury moon watch aimed at the top end of the market in a more wearable size. If the new 321 movement fits in a smaller case I would rather have it one not that I have 14k spare. I don’t think Omega will put the 321 in a standard moon watch case at all. If Omega did it would tarnish the current moon watch and look too much like the standard moon watch. You can see by looking at the new 321 movement that it’s not some mass produced movement like the original one. It’s a small production run beautifully made show case movement done to a extremely high standard. I don’t think it’s a bad move at all by Omega and if anything they are making more good moves than bad ones. Rolex are too reserved and could do with making improvements quicker especially their movements and quality control. Omega are faster to improve things and try new things and sometimes try too many. I like them both and wouldn’t change either.

Omega can charge whatever they want. Its their watch and they made it, so they have the right to decide what they want to charge. On the other hand, we the consumer have the right to decide if we want to throw this kind of money on a ordinary, basically Moonwatch look like, watch. For me, I know that I would never give my hard earned money for a corporate greed that feel they can charge whatever they want. Your opinion may vary and I respect that.

They are only going to make about 2000 321’s per year according to Fratello. The 321 needs extra attention from the watchmaker. I think the watch is cool. But they are asking A LOT for a watch that isn’t a close repro of something that was used. Kind of typical Omega, they give you some things, but then they do something like a sapphire case back.

I have a strange feeling that they're going to move away from the "moonwatch" all together. I feel like an new Speedy Pro is coming, with modern updates, and the modern "master chronometer" 3681 movement, and a hefty price increase to go with it. The original, with the hesalite and the 1861, might be discontinued all together.

Im hoping that this is just covering the R&D and tooling costs for a production run of the 321 (unlike previous limited editions) and we’ll see a £6-7k ‘proper’ Moonwatch at 44mm with Hesalite and 321 movement.

The price doesn’t surprise me for a hand assembled 1000-2000 321 Speedmasters. $13500.00 is just as much as a Daytona and if Omega runs out. You can still order one, and get it before you will ever see a Daytona. Also these “Ed White” RE-editions are not going to be common compared to how many Daytona’s are out there. Omega marks their prices to the max but it’s safe to say this watch is really worth $10k considering it’s hand assembled and I believe parts of the movement are in gold.

The price is ... heavy. But the watch is really beautiful. Amazing so to say. Bad decisions in the past or not. If Rolex could sell a steel chrono at this price point I don't see why Omega couldn't. I would even go more far with that. Demand and supply could make this watch one for the waiting list.
