Why Omega Charges DOUBLE for an Outdated Movement? | Speedmaster 321 Ed White
In 1965, Ed White stepped out of the Gemini 4 and began the first space walk for America. In 2020, Omega recreated the watch he wore on that mission complete with the 321 movement so coveted by collectors. Today we explore why this watch is worth twice the already expensive Speedmaster Professional.

Just received my 321 from the boutique here in Canada, last Speedy Tuesday. LOVE the reference. The perfect blend of modern build construction with all the vintage cues. It’s literally like wearing a museum piece on the wrist without the worry. Omega nailed it as far as I’m concerned, (biased as I may be).

@@Raven77844 my wait was about 7 months. I believe it all comes down to connecting with the right sales associate and having a genuine passion for this reference. I had no prior spend history. In fact it is my very first Omega. I am an avid space nerd and also have a passion for the Lemania 2310 movement. I think all of that came through during my conversations with the Boutique. Good luck to you … IMO it’s a bargain. To the fellow who asks why pay double for an outdated movement, these start at over $40k in other brands. The 321 isn’t for you if you have to ask.

Lovely review of the 321 Speedmaster. I personally own the 3861 because accuracy and magnetic resistance are important to me. It's great that you pointed out that the stopwatch seconds hand can sometimes jump when the wheels come together. Some people don't know that this is normal.

Thanks for a great review, I'm lucky enough to have an original '^65 Ed White' I've owned since 1978, I love it for it's simplicity and the 'Apollo/Moon Watch' that captivated me in the '60's. The 'Cal 321' is a brilliant movement robust and reliable, just what's needed when you're far from home?!

Another note on the cam vs column-wheel debate, the cam-shuttle system (which is what the 861-3861 models use, not just a cam alone) is more durable than a column wheel. The latter is more prone to damage, as the crenellations can break off during impact. With the cam-shuttle system, this is not a concern.

I believe that most of Rolex customers atm dont want a non flashy watch like the old Subs (sadly). Imho old Rolexes like the GMT 1675 are the best ones out there.
I've just bought a SeaGull 1963 manual wind column wheel chronograph. Of course not in the same league as this but exquisite nonetheless. Just like the 321, it's an old movement originally produced by Venus who sold the design and machinery to SeaGull It does kind of beg the question, how can they produce that watch at a tiny fraction of the cost of the Omega. I've no axe to grind here. I do actually own a Speedmaster 1863 Sapphire sandwich which I bought in 2008 and is a treasured procession.

So, without the crown guards, the case is officially 2 mm smaller BUT the diameter of the bezel is probably the same as the Professional 42 mm diameter model? That is, it probably looks and wears the same size. Thanks for the video!
Another detail worth noting is that the Omega wordmark is also true to the original (it‘s not Futura). On the FOiS they stuck to the current Futura wordmark

Wow, good call! Someone knows their stuff! 👍
Once upon a time, I bought a 1939 Tissot watch, ref 6216, with Lemania CH 27 column wheel movement. An early version of the Lemania 2310 - the 321 at Omega. But the same Lemania 2310 was also used among others by Breguet, Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe, and enduring in 2022 with the latest 321 Omega iterations. As for me, my Speedmaster is a 1967 145.012. One cannot reproduce the aging, that it was actually made back then, and yes the 1960s ones are grails. Would I trade my old 321 for a modern day Ed White ? Over my dead body.

Not just any vintage 321 from the museum was scanned.. it was Gene Cernans Apollo 17 speedy
Wow so good investment
I’ve called multiple boutiques and AD’s and I’ve had no luck on the 321. Should I just resign myself to having to pay 20k plus on the Grey market to get this watch? Has anyone had any luck buying this from an AD? Do you pretty much have to play the same game as you do with Rolex AD’s?

I am getting it Friday along with the new omega speed master moonshine gold green dial. And about 8 months ago picked up the 50yr snoopy.
I think explaining this watch’s higher price compred to the professional is quite simple: the people shopping for this watch are not moonwatch customers. They are vintage speedmaster Ed White buyers for whom the price of this watch is perfectly reasonable. That’s why it’s limited too. It’s not supposed to be a volume seller.
So why did the go away form it ?
After handling the watch in the metal, do you believe the watch is worth it’s MSRP?
@WatchCrunchOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
I think it's very subjective right? If you're at the point in your speedmaster collecting journey that you can appreciate how rare it is to have this combination of features, then I think you can find a way to justify the price. I don't know if I'm quite there yet? But the problem is the watch is limited and going for a hefty premium on the secondary market even If you want one.

Yep, limited production and damn flippers!
The current 3861 model is so good what is the advantage of this model? I get that it is hand made and a pre moon watch replica but so what? Is the 3861 that bad?
It is STILL only a speedmaster.
Its standard Omega hype. If the movement was so important, why did they have to scan all the movement parts from a watch in a museum? They could have just asked me for mine. Really, no 321 parts left...where did the parts for my 321 come from when it was sent to Bienne for service? Someone in Omega could not find an original 321 movement? Couldnt they just go on ebay. Its a nice story to make things sound rare. Overall, its a really nice looking watch. The new bracelet looks amazing. If I really wanted to spend 14k on a 321 cal, I would rather find an original Ed White or 145.012 and get it serviced. Especially now since there's a "whole new workshop with experienced watchmakers". BTW, you called them beige markers, but its still a fauxtina (fake patina). Is the column wheel so super special? I have a chrono that uses a column-wheel mechanism for less than $200. Would have been super cool if the origins of this watch when like this: Omega went into archives and found a batch or limited supply of the original of cal. 321 made from the 60s and designed the new Ed White to pay homage around the original vintage movements. The Captain of the Speedmaster Club at my school wears a 105-012. This is for the millennial with dads credit card who doesn't want to buy another Apple watch.
The Speedmaster dial is not an original design. In 1954 the Rodania Geometer came out with it.
Don't need to be the captain of the speedmaster club. I'd be content being the 12th guy on the bench lol.
Am i wierd for thinking this is excellent value?? Not if you want to get a speedy, but a historical watch in general? I mean, this over the Daytona any time, and you can actually get this. Even on the grey market this is a bit more than retail but better than twice retail for a Daytona. Finishing on par, much more historical, and the movement is much much better. Not in terms of specification but in terms of what you get, a new vintage movement. Yeah, the daytona is automatic with hacking and is much more accurate. But tell me, we dont get watches for the main reason to tell the time
Still not sure why the 321 was abandoned to the point of Omega having to reverse engineer the Ed White. Is cost of production the only reason? Why is that not a simple explanation?
