Great video! Thanks! I am really happy that Omega is producing the EW321, not just on a separate assembly line, but by a dedicated watch maker for each complete piece. That attention to detail is definitely worth the price.

Very nice video. I think, that the 321 should have had the hezalite crystal. It is a so much vintage inspired watch, that the acrylic doesnt fit I think. I prefer the new one with the hezalite. 👌🏻

I really like both!, if you dont own a Speedy, I would go towards the new model released last week. But if its your second or third, 321 without question. Great video RJ

Anyone who thinks a mechanical watch is an accurate tool is a fool.... its best to use the stopwatch on your phone. Most mechanical watch enthusiasts really don't care.They buy watches for what it is,not what it does.

A new 321 (even a vintage, if one is game!) is a great first watch for the discerning buyer / new collector. Mine was an 1861 and if I had known better I most certainly would have picked up a 321 at the time. I had not idea they changed movements. In any case .. now I have both. And a panda daytona, a black bay 58 and a number of Seiko's - the lovely GS snowflake, cocktailtime (my fav) and a few vintage movements. Oh, and a Longines l990.2 white dial in 18K that was gifted to me (too small for my wrist). So. We live and we learn and we grow. Don't gate-keep watches just because they are pricey! If someone can afford one? Let them afford one. I also picked up a Helvetia pocket watch at garage sale for $10. I wound it and like clockwork, it can to life! Turns out it is English ww2, 15jewel, and of all the types it is the rarest. Mind blown. I went back to offer them more money but they refused to take it and was happy it was in a good home. Little did they know I only bought it to practice my watch making skills on hahaha Suffice to say, I need another movement now to practice on as that one is a keeper, flawless except for the worn back where it was kept in a pocket for many years. Amazing. And all because I went and bought a Speedy because I wanted to feel like a rocketman!

Fantastic review and comparison very interesting even though I’ll just be sticking with my 1861 which I bought in 2008 for €2500!

In summary, an expected logical sense update of the Omega Speedmaster by using the new 3861 master chronometer movement, here paired with a very interesting re-edition of the Caliber 321 Speedmaster which certainly has the look with all the small details Speedmaster fans look out for... Strategically priced at the amounts a vintage 1960s "105.003" and a vintage "145.012" approximately go for these days. Both are very solid luxury chronographs aimed at a new generation of Speedmaster fans who reasonably & understandably prefer to wear a brand new watch.

The Ed White for sure, because of the size. It is not that much smaller in wearing, but it makes a difference for sure. However, the 42mm one has some advantages concerning accuracy (caliber 3861).

Again, a most professional review on Speedmaster. I have a problem with Omega that I really don't understand why they don't use ceramic bezel on 3861 speedmasters, which could then be a possible way to create the first "Submariner" series for Omega. If I were the designer, I would also develop a self-winding version, with 100 meter WR by screw-down crown, and most importantly with Ceramic bezel.

@@FratelloMagazine Speedmaster was already successful to Watch professionals, yes we love Aluminium and we love hesalite and we love hand-winding. But such good design could also be transformed into ordinary first time watch buyers. At ADs now, Speedmaster is even way worse than the sales of Seamaster.

@@lonu7592 I think that might depend on the market. Speedmaster has been a great seller in many markets. In any case, I agree that a ceramic bezel and sapphire makes sense. But for the fans/enthusiasts, there should always be a Hesalite + Alu version as well :-).

Hi RJ, With regards the sapphire crystal comparison, it appears the EW variant looks a lot more pleasing as the "milky ring" is not as easily apparent or could be inexistent as compared to the sapphire 3861. Is this true based on your on hand experience with both watches? Thanks.

Great video--very informative. Since it does not have crown guards, does the Ed White Caliber 321 wear smaller than the beefier 3861 Speedy Pro? My understanding is that the Ed White version has slightly longer lugs than the 3861 Speedy Pro, which makes me wonder how they wear on the wrist, especially with a strap. Thanks!

Both officially measure 48mm but my calipers says 47mm on the Moonwatch. The Ed White wears a little bit smaller, but not by much. I havent tried it on a strap yet, as I love the bracelet.

Robert Jan, In your review of the 321 you mentioned that Omega managed to get rid of the white hue that was visible in older Speedy versions with the saphire glass. Is this hue also disappeared om the saphire version of the New Speedy Pro ?

I barely notice the milky ring on my 3861. And that's what drove me to buying it as I passed on it last year.

I'm someone who prefers the aesthetics and designs of the vintage Speedmasters better than that of the modern ones - however, I don't want my vintage Speedies to be heavily used - I want to be the first, second or third owner of any watch I buy, and that's a principle I tend to stick to all the time. Which is why, I love the 3594.50, or the new 321 over the new Moonwatch, because to me they're perfect. Is the 3861 the better watch? Yes. But there's something about the 321 that speaks to me to the point where emotions take over logic. Which is why I'd have the 321 instead.

The only drawback to the 321 is the antimagnetism aspect of things, buy since there are a lot of watches that aren't amagnetic, I don't see it as an issue, unless you're really particular about amagnetism. The 321 is more wearable because of its smaller case size, it's more true to form, as it's the original movement that went to the moon, finished just as ornately, and is still as resistant to shock and water as an 1861 Speedmaster. And because it's a more ornate watch that's just as good in every way apart from the magnetism aspect, I don't see why the Moonwatch would be the one to have long-term. But then again, to each, their own.

The Ed White is 0.18mm thinner than the Moonwatch with sapphire and 0.58mm thinner than the one with Hesalite. The sapphire crystal of the Ed White has the same shape as the Moonwatch with sapphire crystal.

Correct me if im wrong but there are 2 types of Speedmaster purchaser: 1. Likes the Speedmaster and its iconic status but would only buy it once. Tends to go for the Sapphire version as its more durable and has display back. 2. Loves the Speedmaster and is well versed in its history. Would purchase several versions and not opposed to owning several. Tends to purchase the Hesalite model as its true to its original form and looks superior to the hesalite model with its warm vintage feel. This isnt the rule but i feel this covers the majority. This is what ive noticed with people who praise the Sapphire version vs Hesalite and vice versa

What is the average value retention for a Speedmaster? The sapphire sandwich is a 26% increase from last year. Do you think prices on the 2nd hand market for both the new models (once available on the 2nd hand market) and old modes will continue to go up?

It is hard to make such predictions, I noticed a little increase already on the 3570.50 for example, since the new release. The secondary prices on the new models (once available) will go up of course, as the retail price also went up. So if you still want to purchase a modern Speedmaster, now would be a good time for a pre-owned model. On Chrono24, you can use their "Watch Collection" app to add a Speedmaster (discontinued reference) to your collection or "Following" container and see how the price developed over the past months and years.

@@FratelloMagazine finally got the new sapphire version. Amazing watch which suits my everyday needs. Also the sharpness myth by the timeless watch channel is incorrect. The case back is raised, so the edges don’t really make contact with your skin.

I would have the normal speedy. However, if i would ever spend 15k on a watch, the 321 is the way to go. Daytona?? Whats that?? Thats a childs toy comparen to the 321 😉 on a serious note, this is THE definition of a faithful, well done re release of a vintage piece!

You probably couldn’t find a new Daytona unless you go grey market, that will cost you a lot more than 15k, for an inferior watch.

@@MasterChief37 Still think the Daytone is a bit better in the fine details on the dial, but that is only because the speedmaster has a 'simpeler' dial out of the box. But I really think the new Daytone looks a bit cheap with that really glossy ceramic bezel. 321 the way to go!

How have they overcome the milky ring on the Sapphire crystal fitted to the Ed White? Have they changed the crystal Just on that model ? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Think of the milky ring as the crescent of the moon and it will change your perspective. Sapphire is thinner and you won’t scratch and you get to see the movement

You can't go wrong with either. If you can, compare both in person and then just roll with your gut feeling - that's what I did previously when deciding between hesalite or sapphire. Maybe that works for you as well! Good luck and enjoy your (soon to be) new Speedmaster!

Visually I prefer the hesalite but want the display back case! The 321 solves that problem. The Sapphire crystal does not have the milky ring and a beautiful movement. But I cannot afford it. Beside my local AD will not even take my name for a wait list.

I have no problem swimming with my Speedmaster but don’t do it often.

Do you think there will be a speedy prof in steel with the 321 in the future? Thanks

I don’t think that will happen soon due to the production limitation with this movement.

They should record and show the new 321 Atelier..

So if the main cost premium is down to the hand build by a single watchmaker, just buy the cheaper watch and send it for a full service

I can se that point of view, but also consider the fact that they had to take meticulous X-rays of the original 321 to recreate it and also have precious metal components in the movement itself. So, in total, we’re looking at a hand made watch with endless hours of R&D, made with the finest materials. Omega isn’t trying to sell them to everyone, only the collectors, and this tells me that the brand understands its customers well.

Caliber 321 does not have a hacking feature.

yea.. ed white is not worth the price difference for me which is why I bought the 3861. The 3861 has a number of superior features in comparison to the 321. Purchasing luxury wristwatches is virtually an emotional experience, but again for me the 321 in no way justifies that price difference in comparison to what the 3861 now offers. The ceramic bezel in my opinion is somewhat contradictory to the original Speedmaster, its not needed. The 3861 did a marvelous job of maintaining the inherent "soul" of the original Speedmaster while upgrading its components to a modern standard. Changing the bezel in my opinion hinders more than enhance the piece. Each to his own.

What about the presence of a column wheel in the 321 movement? Smaller size? Better power reserve? Better looking bracelet? Better looking movement? Lack of milky ring on the sapphire crystal? Last but not least - every true collector appreciates the fact 321 is the closest replica to the actual movement that went on the moon. The 3861 movement has nothing to do with the Moon walk and is NOT certified by NASA. Disclaimer: I do not own the 321.

@@wristroll_vlad Most of your points I don't really care about since I'm not a collector. If I was then the Ed White is the way to go for sure but for routine use, 3861 is ideal. Don't have to worry about damaging anything and can where it without concern.

I think the saphire crystal is a lot nicer on the Ed White. It is a shame Omega does not do this on the 3861. The size seems great, the color of the hour makers is more beautifull and the movement is prettier. But double the price? I do not kniw how long the waiting list is in the Netherlands.....paying 18.000 on the grey market is over the top.

Missing the proper side by side shot and comparing the size of the dial or wrist shot comparison

Not sure if the Ed White is entirely hand made. Perhaps the movement is hand finished and assembled, but the case and bracelet are likely to be machine made.

Hi, hand-assembled of course, by one watchmaker.

Was so happy to get them 3861 and surprised how comfortable the bracelet is for me. A huge step up from there 1998 bracelet of old. There 321 was appealing but no more. I’ll spend there extra 7k elsewhere. Maybe the new Submariner.

It would be better with more closeups on the watches side by side.

If you look carefully at the close ups, you will notice that the Professional has crown guards (also increasing the diameter to 42mm) and has “Professional” on the dial. The applied logo and the printing of the wordmarks is also slightly different. The movements itself are of course quite different from eachother, so I assume you talk about everything else. Ah, and on top, the bracelets are different as well.

@@sfomann Personally, I don't care mush for the "historical Provenance". I want a tool watch which I can wear the heck out of, so let me give you some insight into how I think of this new release: The 3861 has resistance to shock and magnetism. my holy trinity is Water, shock and Magnetic resistance. Frankly 50meters is enough for hand washing and the occasional dunk in water to possibly clean the watch. Now one could ask, "I can get the recently discontinued Speedmaster for close to $4000 with a full box set, so why would I think of paying +$6K???" To which my answer is as follows: Consider that the 1861 (recently discontinued) has been produced in the millions and is one of the most ubiquitous watches around. A large supply means that Prices will inevitably fall. The 3861 is no different because though it may seem unattainable right now, just wait till the hype dyes down and these models start becoming available on the secondary market both new and used. I don't think they will be $4k, but definitely close to $5k. But really, the first question you have to ask yourself is "what do I want out of my watch?" if the Master Chronometer certification feels overrated to you, then go for an 1861! But if the updated specs appeal to you (they definitely do to me) than have patience, Grasshopper ;) In closing, I will say this. I have found that immediately attaining a watch you fall in love with can prove to be a lackluster experience with the honeymoon phase dying out quickly. If you truly love this watch, or any watch for that matter, I would tell you to research it, save for it, and then treat yourself when the time is right and for a reason that reminds you why you bought that watch. Just my thinking on the subject as someone whose been in this hobby for the past decade.

The hesalite 3861 looks softer and more vintage, it's the one for me, plus 800 euro less. The 321 is nice, but omega should have updated the movement with a coaxial escapement and made it a master chronometer.

There is something in the twisted lugs Omega cases, which makes me prefer them almost universally. Sorry Ed White Speedy, Railmaster Trilogy, Seamaster 300...

The 321 is the way to go. I will buy my Friends Speedy from 1964 with the 321.

So there are obviously reports that the new Speedmaster cases have not been finished correctly and the edges are not smoothed out after milling resulting in a very sharp edge on the flat parts. Is the 321 done in the same way and how bad are these “razor sharp” edges on the watches?

We saw a youtube movie ranting about it, but we simply don't agree. Our examples were fine and not sharp at all. So we definitely don't share the sentiment. We also received notice from some of the new owners of these watches that they don't share the sentiment.

@@bertraminc9412 Yes, but he might find sharp, I don't. And vice versa. Some watches we get in here for review will cut your wrist, but that was absolutely not the case with the new Speedmaster Pro watches we had here. End of story: you need to try and test it yourself at the dealer.

The Ed White has a long waiting list, the new Moonwatch Master Chronometer will be Omega's bread and butter, so they will become widely available when the distribution properly started.

The 3861 looks more appealing

WOW the finishing on the small seconds hand on that brand new Speedy is horrendous (See 31 seconds into the video). Unfortunately par for the course for what I've experienced with Omega.

You are talking about the center part right? It is just not painted (by design). If you examine it with a loupe, you will see that you just see the metal pinion.

@@FratelloMagazine Nope not the pinion. About halfway down the side of the seconds hand, the lower section is rough and unfinished. Like they stamped out the hand, painted it, but never bothered to sand off the burs.

Swimming? With a 50m non screwed down crown chronograph??? Omega said that?

The ed white is even worth than a normal panda daytona

Both are wonderful watches. What puzzles me is why the ed white does not show the milky ring in its saphire, while it is still present in the new 3861. Any clue about the rationale? (Different contouring, mounting...)

How is the finishing of the new speedmaster? I heard the edges are very sharp finished

How do you overlook the bracelet and the horrible end link? Epic design fail that will dissuade many collectors from buying the new speedy.

I love both bracelets, the Ed White as well as the one on the new Professional Moonwatch. It is similar to the one on my Moonshine which I have been wearing for 1,5 years now. Amazingly comfortable. The end link didn’t bother me in those 1,5 years.

METAS is internal to Omega? Sounds about as biased as the Internal Affairs for police departments. “We did a full investigation on ourselves and found us to be innocent.” 😂

It's not a part of Omega, it's a Federal Institute and it's Switzerland’s official authority for measurements.

I'll ask my wife if she thinks it's worth it.

the only difference that matter is that the ED white is a collectible and will appreciate over time. if you can afford it go for that one at retail if you cant the regular speedmaster is still one of the best watches anyone can buy
