Rolex Daytona VS Omega Speedmaster "Ed White" - Rolex vs Omega: Battle of the Chronographs

While the Rolex Daytona and Omega Speedmaster are far from the only chronographs on the market, they are certainly among the most iconic and popular. They are also certainly the most compared chronographs on the market. Today, it's Tim's turn to compare these two next-level chronographs.
Both the Daytona and Speedmaster have been constant presences in the watch world, though their histories could not be more different - despite their similar origins. Both originally created as racing watches, their paths diverged as the Speedmaster found itself aiming for the moon, while the Daytona found a home on some of the most iconic wrists of the 21st century.
In today's comparison, Tim looks at two thoroughly modern variants on the models, the outgoing ceramic Daytona (discontinued in 2023), and the "Ed White" Speedmaster.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116500LN "Panda"
The Daytona is (and has been for several years now) the most desirable and sought-after watch on the market. Introduced at Baselworld 2016, the stainless steel, ceramic-bezeled update to the Daytona immediately had people talking. There is no denying that, over seven years later, the 116500 has held on to its magic. Even the introduction of a new model at Watches and Wonders 2023 has not quelled the desire for the outgoing model.
Originally introduced in 1963 as a racing watch, and embraced by noted drivers like Paul Newman (actually, let’s not open that particular can of worms today), the Daytona was far from an immediate success. In fact, it was only on its 1990s relaunch that people started really paying attention to the Crown’s signature chronograph. In the intervening three decades, the Daytona has gone through a number of iterations, including shifting to an in-house caliber and the introduction of ceramic bezels, but no matter what Daytona you choose, you really can’t go wrong.
Omega Speedmaster Cal. 321 "Ed White" 311.30.40.30.01.001
Introduced in 2020, the Cal. 321 “Ed White” Speedmaster brought the iconic movement of the early Speedmasters back to a steel watch, the movement having been relaunched in a platinum Speedy several months earlier. While one wins no points for guessing that this would be a tremendously popular watch, this watch is not one to be underestimated.
Coming in at 39.8mm, this CK2998-inspired Speedmaster draws inspiration from the very first Speedy worn into space. Worn on the wrist of astronaut Ed White, who would go on to tragically die in the Apollo I launchpad fire, the Speedmaster faced the immense test that is a spacewalk for the first time, proving a stalwart companion and setting the foundation for the Speedmaster’s flight qualification and continued use as an EVA watch for NASA.

The Ed White went up in price to $15,400.00. Hand assembled (two-fold assembly like Lange) and a much sought-after movement--it is still well worth the money.

I would choose the speedmaster based solely on that lemania movement. That movement is beautiful on the VC Corne de Vache, it is also beautiful in the Ed white Speedmaster.

Tim talked about the Daytona being a tougher movement. I don't disagree on principle, because the 4130 definitely pacts more and newer tech, but also don't forget that 321 is still one of the only few movements that passed NASA's gruelling tests in shock, high/low temp, vibration, vacuum, water/humidity resistant, anti-magnetic (although the new 321 removed the anti-magnetic case in favor of a display caseback), etc, and saved human lives during the Apollo 13 mission. So if you want a watch that has actually been certified by a national lab for toughness, the 321 is the right one for you.

  • @highnrising

    @highnrising

I think that NASA testing was largely promotional. If wristwatches were necessary to the missions, NASA would have spec'ed them out for legibility and ease of use--in addition to toughness--and they would have had them custom made--like all the components they use. They would not have bought relatively cheap watches that anyone could buy at a jewelry store. I'd trust a test from a modern lab that fully discloses its procedures and results over some legendary NASA testing from decades ago.

@@highnrising Many misunderstanding here. Watch was a mission critical equipment (see what happened with Apollo 13). NASA did give out specs and asked vendors to supply samples for testing, like any government procurement process. NASA's tests procedures and results were well documented. If you search around you could find sources to these claims. The Speedmaster Wikipedia article includes many reliable sources.

Tough choice if I had the money I would pick the Ed White because... It's hand built/hand assembled. That puts the Ed White in haute horology territory. Unlike a Daytona, some of it's components are machine assembled. So in a way you are really paying in part for the manual labor of a master watch maker. At a fraction of the cost for some other Haute Horology brand that builds/assembles it's watches by hand. It has Sedna gold movement parts, the Daytona does not. It's the legendary 312 re-imaged movement with modern engineering improvements. Other than the Zenith El Primero, enthusiasts and non enthusiast know what a 312 movement means. When was the last time you heard non-Rolex or Rolex guys talk about Daytona movements? The Ed White is roughly the same retail price as a Daytona. You can get the Ed White waaaaay before you can get a Daytona at an AD. Ask yourself, does Rolex offer a 1969 Daytona reissue that anyone can buy? NO, of course you cannot. Rolex will never do this, and if they ever did. None of us will ever be offered one. The Ed White comes with an open case back. The 312 movement is classic, traditional, and beautiful movement to look at. It's a sleeper, you won't get robbed for an Ed White. You will not get unwanted attention, or looked at as some douchebag that likes to flex. The better watch is the Ed White for the money, and time you are going to wait for one IMO is the better purchase choice. It's more special (for the price), it's wearable, and it's for enthusiasts that know the history of the watch. MOST Daytona owners cannot tell you much about the movement, or the history of Rolex. Sure the Daytona is a very close second choice. It's technically a tougher watch, better bracelet, with a greater power reserve, more water resistance, and it's COSC. The Daytona $$$ value is there if you buy at retail and truly need to sell the watch in the future. Both of these watches are for people that already own watches and collect them. These are not for first time buyers, or only one watch for everyday use. These are more for enthusiast more so for the Ed White. If you just want a watch get the Daytona (good luck with that). If you love watches and collect them. Get both if you can, and enjoy. It will be easier to get the Ed White for sure. If you're a purist get the Ed White. You can always get a Daytona if you are willing to pay more than retail.

By EVERY metric the Speedy is the better watch. It's precision is simply out of this world. My Speedmaster Professional Sapphire Sandwich 3861 is exactly ONE second late every EIGHT WEEKS. And though the Omega is bigger than the Rolex it's much more comfortable on the wrist. On top of things the Omega is not only cheaper than the Rolex but it's AVAILABLE at your local AD. I‘m really a fan of Tim but I need to disagree with him on a few things here (I‘m aware no one cares but still): 1) I’m waiting to hold the 126500 in my hands, but I expect it to be quite different (both thinner ans bigger). I hope I‘m wrong and Rolex didn‘t mess up the proportions just like PP did with the 5811. Regardless of that, the chubbier, cut-off lugs similar to the 116505/506/509, etc are a downgrade for me. 2) The 116500 is quite different from the 16520, a comparison to the 116520 would have been more interesting, particularly the later ones. 3) The 116500 is better suited for smaller wrists than the Ed White as it definitely wears smaller. If my memory serves me correctly, because of its long straight lugs the 39.7mm Ed White also wears bigger than the 42mm Speedy Pro (certainly the 3861 where the bracelet doesn‘t flare out).

A sports watch can't have 5 BAR WR, this is no contest for the Daytona.

That’s a worn out cliche. They are chronographs predominantly used for timing sporting events. The WR is a non issue, it’s simply long been proven.

its an issue when you have to take off your watch to go swimming, shower, or remove at the beach, or wash your hands, its a non starter for me. No one uses a Tachymeter to time sports cars. Its really just lazy to not have a screw down crown.@@waterfordrs22

You NEED try on the Speedy before buying..can’t stress that enough. I purchased both and as much as I wanted to keep the Omega I just couldn’t live with that bracelet. Yes, I tried the Speedy with other straps but then wore strange and top heavy without the weight of the bracelet. Again, I tried but it felt not as solid and not as robust as the Daytona. My two cents.

Omega's awful bracelet and unbearable thickness drove me away from the brand. Although the 321's got a legendary movement and rich history, the daytona is the clear winner in this battle.

I can't buy a Speedy or Seamaster Diver 300M because of the bracelet designs. I just don't like them.

Regardless of the hype, there’s just no getting past the fact the Daytona is an ugly watch. The speedmaster is just a beautiful and timeless design.

Speedmaster completely overrated , NASA…who cares. Omega killed their own brand with the copious amounts of limited editions and silly 007 branded watches, just stupid. That Daytona wins hands down, though prefer the black dial SS Daytona.

sorry the Daytona looks like kids flashy toy compared to the ed white. a proper horology, stylish unassuming, only for those who know with with one of the best looking movement . high horology in most iconic case. no look at me type of effect and you defiantly won't find yourself in a room full of them. much rearer as well. much much. for true horology enthusiasts. had them both, sold the ceramic daytona, got a zenith. every clown has the ceramic daytona, it became such an obnoxious watch, can't stand it. its not even that nice, kinda hated it on my wrist.
