Should You Buy a Rolex Daytona? | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It was the watch that caused uproar, queues around the block-at least on paper, anyway. Imagine this, a product so undesirable that they can’t even be given away that then evolves to become something so sought after, people waited years to get one. The new, shiny ceramic Daytona may have stolen the limelight-but is the steel-bezelled 116520 still a watch worth having?

I have a 116520 in white dial, I love it. the bracelet and bezel is a scratch magnet. I see myself reaching for it less and less lately but every once in a while it becomes my daily (mine ins mid 2010's from before this insanity so MSRP is what I paid and no wait list)

  • @JABBERWOCK1977

The bezel looks strangely matt/satin here when it’s usually polished and shiny like the rest of the case. It’s usually a bit of a scratch magnet so perhaps matt finish is the result of non-standard polishing. Quite like the matt look though.

Seiko included? Of course. Hard to tell the story and leave out the winner. Only reason it's disputed is because the ethnocentrism of the Swiss refused to acknowledge that Seiko releasing the watch to the public several months before Heuer (Zenith was 3rd, El Primero my ass...) because the release was in Japan.

@@dimman77 You have to be an absolute idiot to think that they didn't acknowledge Seiko for any other reason than marketing, just like Seiko didn't do too much of a buzz because they were marketing other products. Besides, it's actually highly disputed because we don't know exactly when the real Seiko release happened between early production and proper release. And rolex can't keep the volume of their watches low forever because they're a mass market brand in the mid tier luxury segment..they won't end up making any money and only resellers will make huge profits..so something eventually will give..the bubble always goes pop! Also prefer pre-ceramic Daytona. The black ceramic bezel is not a good match for a black dial.

@archie baldwin I may agree with you, but having a black dial is more important to me than having a black ceramic bezel and the current ceramic model with a black dial and black bezel just looks plain ugly, like one large black glob. If only they would come out with a ceramic bezel that is color-matched to the case along with a black dial that would be great.

Imagine being offered a Daytona at list from an AD with the hypothetical caveat that you could never sell it. Never. It’s yours for life. Sell it and you drop dead. In the contract. Can you really see £10,500 in that steel watch? Difficult to recalibrate your viewpoint when the hype is gone. In reality Rolex could double the list price overnight and still they’d queue around the block. Triple it maybe. A steel watch. Think about that. That’s the power of the brand. That’s the depth of our greed. Pathetic really - Haha! In 2020 you’d think we’d take our eye off the ball, but sadly no. We’re more hypnotised by this watch than ever before. Up and up it goes out of reach like a fairground balloon on the breeze. Full of helium, hype... but not much more. Those who get their hands on them can’t advertise them for resale fast enough. Sold on and on. Nobody wants to hold on for long. Get rid. Cash in. And who can really blame them?

Sounds like you’re trying very hard to feel better about not owning a Daytona 😂. Give it a rest man, people who own Daytonas laugh at your sour grapes criticism.

That's just the thing. The people that own these watches are at the top of the list precisely because 10 grand isn't a big deal to them and they won't ever sell it, unless their heirs do. Rolex aren't interested in feeding grey market profiteers, or listening to people whinge about the watch being expensive. That's why most people will wait years, it is to shake loose the chancers and the unserious. If you are properly serious (and ADs usually can tell) you'll get your watch much quicker than the waiting lists would suggest.

The amount of gold used in a gold watch doest really reflect the extra cost over its steel version. At the end of the day Rolex puts its money into marketing minor tweaks, Lange puts its money into the craft. They are all simply watches, do you want to flex or do you want to marvel at a watch. Even those that like rolex for the design also love the ego stroke of having ther watch recognised

The story i do not knew. An unwanted Rolex, it sounds like the Daytona was in the same situation as the Cellini. So a Cellini is maybe a treasure for the future. Despite a Daytona was not on a suit of an astronaut, it saved from limited edition craze.
