The 321 is not a rip off. You will understand when you hold it in your hands. It is a small team handling it in Biel, Switzerland and they have limited production capacity. I will buy one and as far as I am concerned, I prefer it to a Daytona.

This watch isn’t for everyone. I was in an Omega boutique yesterday and I was having this same conversation. This watch is for people who see the value in the craftsmanship, the materials and the history of the movement. The faux patina is there to distinguish it from the FWOTM model. Omega have chosen a real haut horology route with this movement. The movement is constructed by one person and is finished in gold. That process is extremely expensive. It’s unnecessary, but so is all of luxury watch making really. The 1861 movement is a great movement. If you can’t afford or don’t see the value in the new 321 version, then don’t buy it. It really is that simple. I don’t understand people complaining about it. There are so many alternatives in the Speedmaster collection. In an ideal world I’d be able to buy a new Patek, Rolex and AP every year for the rest of my life... ain’t gonna happen. At least with Omega you have the chance to walk in and try on more than just one example of their range and in all likelihood you get treated with respect (in my experience)

@@jamesnash7262 what issue? That's how the company has chosen to construct this movement. If you're not happy with it's price or inevitable lack of availability, all that means is that this watch isn't for you. The Nautilus isn't for me. Before reading the price, I was expecting $10-$12k and I think that's where they expected it to land. $12k after taxes is about where I start to think about it, above that as I can think of plenty of watches I'd rather have.

I never really had any appeal for the Speedmaster until the 321 "Ed White" came along. The flat-link bracelet has more of a vintage aesthetic that just works with the rest of the watch and is more true to the original. The case without the crown guards is both smaller, easier to wind and more visually appealing. Then onto the movement. A beautiful movement, that found it's way into Patek Philipe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet timepieces in one form or another. It's also the original movement for this case style so it makes the most sense. The scratch resistance offered by the domed crystal is welcome, especially considering the absence of the milk ring on this model. The open caseback to view that beautiful movement is the icing on the cake. The fact they need to make these in a seperate division only by a single watchmaker at a time, and are thus only able to make 1000 pieces per year adds another level of specialness to this timepiece. High attention to detail and limited production quantities of specially manufactured parts raises the price. To call the 321 a rip off is to show your complete ignorance to the intracies of the design, crafting and history of the 321. The market doesnt also appear to share your views, the 321 Ed White is currently on a 2 year waitlist, with grey market examples trading 40% over msrp for new examples.

Hey Jory - great work. Here is my recommendation if someone has the budget for this new 321: 1. Get a modern CK 2998 re-issue which has the 1861 movement to have the flavor of the FOIS and is a numbered edition, or just the FOIS if you prefer. 2. Get a hesalite Speedy Pro of any year to have the bonafides that you have THE space watch with the 861/1861 depending on year. 3. Get a restored Seiko 6139-600x to get your need for a column wheel chronograph with the addition of a vertical clutch and an automatic movement to get the bonafides of the first auto chrono in space (or ever even...). 4. Take a nice Caribbean cruise with your honey with the money left over and bring your new cool watches with you to take fabulous pictures of in exotic places.

I don’t understand the Omega “hate” re the limited Speedies. Lots of horses for courses. And they have no issue selling any of them. Not dissimilar AT ALL to Rolex and the Daytona; overpriced steel chronos that WILL SELL. Except Rolex gets no static despite the fact that they make the Daytona from pure unobtanium. If I saw critiques on both, I wouldn’t even bother making this post. But I don’t. So here it is.

I am a lucky guy. About 15-20 years ago I bought an Omega Seamaster gold-plated Chronograph for 325.00 from a pawn shop. It was in acceptable working conditions, but very dirty. I sent it to Omega, got refurbished, and still have. it. Before that, I had a large collection of Speedmasters, about 31, that I had also gotten cheaply mostly from pawn shops too. I sold most of them except the Seamaster. Then, my interest came again and saw Omega re-introduced the 321 as the Ed White model, and even though it was expensive, I got it after saving for some time. Then, just a couple of months after I bought the 321, Omega introduced the 3861 Meta Certified Speedmaster, and I also got one just three weeks ago. Now my actual collection is just 6 watches, those three Omega Chronos, a Zenith El Primero, an Omega X-33 and the Seiko 6138 "Pogue" chrono. I am more than satisfied having them because I have the best chronos ever made regarding brands. I don't think this New Omega 321 edition is a rip off, after all, it was the movement that was originally certified by NASA in 1965, beating Rolex, Longines and Hamilton chronos. So you do your own evaluation. Mine is that I have watches that will satisfy me for the rest of my life!!!!!!!! Regarding this video, it is GRRREAT!!!!!!

Supposedly the way the movement is assembled is akin to high horology, which if true would make the price justified I guess. However in the same way that many people have a hard time spending so much on Grand Seiko, because of the Seiko name, people will probably have a hard time spending so much on a speedmaster because of the prevalence of similar looking, far cheaper alternatives.

Actually the legend is not the Speedy 321 itself. I owned both a 1939 and 1945 Tissot with the Lemania 27 column wheel chronograph - an early version of the 1942 Lemania 2310. Those early Tissots were far higher quality than modern Tissot, especially with top notch Lemania movements. Considering the 2310 was used by Breguet, Vacheron and Patek also, yes, you will pay high for a 2310 in that new 321. So I am not surprised. I love my 1969 861 and 1968 321. Fabulous pieces, and yet still affordable. And the Lemania 2310 can probably be considered as one of the top 3 chronograph movements ever made.

I have a standard steelback Speedmaster Professional which I bought over 25 years ago and which has been perhaps my favourite possession and my daily wear watch for all of that time. However, as much as I love it if looked at in strictly objective terms when I can buy a perfectly decent watch for less than a tenth of the price and my cheap smart watch is way more accurate and functional then you could argue even the base model is a rip-off. I love nice watches, although I am not a real collector I have four quite nice mechanical watches (Omega, Fortis and Tudor) but I also recognise that the whole value case for watches breaks down very quickly and it is all about whether you like them. If you really like a watch and you can afford it then you just accept the price.

GREAT review Jory, giving it you're all, as always! I'm a bit biased as I'm lucky enough to own a '65 Ed White', which I've had since 1978 for £85 (£425 in 2023 allowing for inflation, so a bit of a bargain?!) and was my first 'serious watch', I saved up to buy it from my first full time job, so it means a great deal to me, I really wanted a MKII, but they were out of my reach then, if I'd have known what they'd be worth now, I'd have bought as many as I could! Yes the Cal 321 is a classic movement, it went to the moon and back again, only the purchaser can say if the modern iteration is worth the money, I still love my '65 Ed White'. TBH when you consider the 'games' that certain other manufactures make you play to purchase one of their items that you actually want to own, it's not such a bad deal?!

Hello everyone! I don’t know if this is a controversial question or not (I’m just now getting interested in timepieces) but are omega planning to make a speedmaster watch with an automatic movement? I think I would find it a bit annoying to keep winding a $14100 watch instead of it just being automatic. I know Omega have some automatic speedmasters but I don’t fancy the design of those as much as I prefer the design of the new 321. Any thoughts?

  • @amundbjerve

I have two thoughts on this: 1. It's expensive when compared to the regular Speedmaster, but cheap when compared to Vacheron Constantin with the 1141 or 1142 movements, all based on the Lemania 2310. 2. For this kind of money, you can buy a decent vintage cal. 321 (ref. 145.012 or maybe even 105.012) in a little less than perfect condition _plus_ a newer one with the 861/1861 movement. I am inclined to go the latter route. It's okay to have more than one Speedmaster, isn't it? And if I get rich I can have the VC too. I wonder what the pre owned prices will be.

The 321 model may seem expensive but that’s because we all tend to assume that the watch buying market is watch geeks like us and also that they all have our personal budgets/finances. Enough people pay twice rrp for a Daytona to prove that they’re not overpriced. And I’m guessing the 321 will sell for similarish prices to the non ceramic Daytona and it’s got a great movement, history, coolness etc along with being that price which in itself is enough to sell it to people buying at that price point. I couldn’t afford it now so I have the speedy pro but there are plenty of people with more money who wouldn’t buy a speedy pro because they’d think it was a cheaper watch but equally they can’t get a Daytona... so they may likely buy the 321. They may not all be watch geeks like us but only a very small percentage of the watch market is like us. That’s why Daniel wellington sells more than Halios 😂

I like Omega watches. I own three, one of which is a Speedy Pro MOTM. Nothing special or limited edition but it did come in that ridiculously large box with all the unnecessary knick-knacks. When I first heard about the 321, I wanted one. But when I found out how much it costs...no thank you. I'm fine with my caliber 1861.

Omega just shitted in their own pants. It's not OK to pay 14 grand for a re issue where u can get a vintage 321 for less than 10 grand in a reasonable condition. Get the original 321!

The reason for the price of that watch is because the 1861 movement might be going and replaced with the co-axial movement 3821.and the 321 manual wind. That takes the Speedmaster Pro into a higher price point to compete with Rolex and a few other watch companies. The Speedmaster 1861 is the most undervalued watch on the market and a real gem that should be selling in the 7 thousand plus range.

First and foremost, the bubble of swiss watch is doing very well, thank you social media. Then, it is a limited, unique, manual movement, modernized, on one of the most iconic watches. it is at around 15K E in Europe (higher taxes) but for that quality is a steal. And they are not going to produce a lot of them. Most will settle for the Speedy pro moonwatch for a third of the price

IMHO, first, completely replaced the current standard calibre 1863 / 1861 Speedmaster Professional with calibre 321 and lower the price to around US$9k range. Second, incorporate Co-axial escapement and Si14 balance spring and wheel into the calibre 1863 and replaced these with calibre 3330 on Speedmaster Racing at similar current price range.

I understand your views. But I agree with some viewers who wrote that this is a watch for a person who values the history, craftsmanship in short for a special watch enthusiast. It is not ment to be the only watch that you own. This one is more like a crown in the collection. In my case I love the look of the watch I adore the details they took the time to make. Is it worth that much money? For the right person absolutely... that person has been waiting for a remake for decades hehe for a person who doesn't know the history and only cares about looks it is not. That person will start to compare it to something like an overpriced Rolex 🤣

The titanium 321 was $150,000, any vintage speedy 321 fro the time is going to set you back $15-25,000. To be fair if you want the 321 there's no better way in my opinion. If you really just want the speedy on your wrist you can get the Speedmaster and you don't care about the movement then get the Speedmaster reduced with an ETA for between $1-2000. I think if you're gonna go for the Speedy, go all the way and get the real 321.

  • @andrestenstrup1042

There are serveal things in it. There is no need to make the new 321 speedmaster limited because the pricetag already makes it limited to many. Nr. 2. The 321 speedmaster makes the cheapes new man on the moon watch looks cheap and will properly easier sell now. Nr 3. If you like iconic watches that is spacerelated but with no chronograph, then get the first watch in space Sturmanskie Gararin 3745128 brand new for about $ 400,- with the orginal same movement that was used in space in 1961 by Gararin. I think that the Omega speedmaster man on the moon should have been redesigned by only one thing. A larger crown. It is small and hard to turn. But a very beautefull watch it is. And let´s not forget. Bulova 96B251 also went to the moon when the Omega man on the moon watchs crystal came of doing a moonflight. As a backup watch Davis Schoot had his Bulova. There is a reissue of that watch too with chronograph for only about $ 500,-

First, the 321 ed white, is 100% VERY limited. In fact you can't get one now unless you're willing to pay a ridiculous $20+k. I agree it's overhyped, and an outdated movement to boot. I purchased the moon watch with the 3861 movement, and it's better than all of these other movements mentioned, for half the price. I got my sapphire sandwich on a bracelet from my AD a couple months ago for $6120 OUT THE DOOR. Master chronometer, 15,000 gauss, more accurate, more shock resistant and longer service interval than the 321 or the 861. Why people paying $20+k for that is beyond me. People fall into the watch hype. Just want whatever is hot, whatever is hard to get. I wouldn't pay $10k for the anniversary series you're wearing either...

Dont know why anyone would spend the extra $$$ for a LE. Its "exclusive" just because the manufacturer said it is. I have an original 321 and 861. So Omega said, lets change casebacks and engrave some dates on the side of the case and call it the 25th anniversary LE and charge triple the price. If you really want to own a 321, or 861, just buy used in good condition and have Omeaga do a overhaul and you'll still be 4k ahead of the game. All these re-issues and modern interpretations of the old classics just depreciates like crazy. Look at the Ploprof.

There are 2 people who want to buy a speedmaster: 1. Those who like the watch and want the latest (or relatively new) model of speedmaster because of its heritage or design and are looking at new or slightly used models. 2. Those who want *the* speedmaster model that went to the moon and are looking at vintage used models.

FYI: The Ed White Speedmaster (105.003) also "went to the moon." In fact, it is fair to say that the Ed White is the last Speedmaster that went to the moon. Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, wore his Ed White during Apollo 17; and, in fact, this new 321 Ed White was made using the actual watch Cernan wore during Apollo 17--Omega had to scan Cernan's actual watch in order to make the re-creation. Of course, the 321 Speedy Pro worn by Aldrin was the first watch worn on the moon, but let's not perpetuate the myth that the Speedy Pro was the only Speedmaster model that went to the moon. There's no such thing as "[THE] [S]peedmaster model that went to the moon." Not to your point, but it seems that one thing some Speedy Pro fans don't appreciate is that, to many people (and I'm qualifying this very carefully), the lyre lugged Speedy Pro is ugly AF. And that, conversely, the straight lugged Ed White Speedmaster (both new and old)--also with the elegant two lines of text (i.e. "Omega Speedmaster" rather than "Omega Speedmaster Professional") on the dial--is exactly right and beautiful to the eye. So, for those of us who don't like lyre-lugged Speedy Pros at any price, but LOVE the Ed White, the argument that a better choice would be a Speedy Pro model at a much cheaper price is kind of a non sequitur. It's a little like someone who loves the color blue taking the position that those who love only the color green should instead be happy with blue. People out there saying they "don't get" why anyone would pay so much for this new 321 Ed White (laying aside that it has a gold 321 movement being assembled by a sole expert of the movement) sound kind of silly to me. Sounds like, why would you want a Porsche when this four-door Hyundai which is a classic tool car is tens of thousands of dollars cheaper and can fit more people? Or like, why would you pay three times as much for pizza from this other pizzeria when you can get a Little Caesars pizza for only $5? It comes down to personal taste. Although the cost is of course always something to be seriously considered, for some, it is not always the most important factor. People like what they like, and, to me, it is not helpful for others to chime in that they "don't get" why anyone would pay so much money for the new 321 Ed White when you can buy an iconic Speedy Pro Moonwatch for thousands less. It really is comparing apples to oranges.

My comment was not intended to assert that the Ed White Speedmaster worn by Cernan during Apollo 17 was the only Speedmaster he wore during the mission, or that it was THE last Speedmaster that went to the moon.

Omega can only make so many, so production limitations will keep these scarce. I don’t find the price far outside comparable iconic watches store from other brands....
