Reference Points: Understanding The Entire Lineage Of The Omega Speedmaster
Ғылым және технология
For the full story, go here: www.hodinkee.com/articles/unde...
In the third installment of Reference Points, our Ben Clymer sits down with Eric Wind to examine the legendary Omega Speedmaster, a watch that has become a brand unto itself over the last 50 years. We'll examine the origins of the Speedmaster, its progression into the "space watch" that we know today, and how it has evolved over the years.

First time I watched this the dude put me to sleep, then I tried on a Speedmaster in person. Came back to this vid and it all made sense. I’ve since bought the speedy and have seen this a dozen times. Great content
Hats off to Eric for being able to rattle off all those reference numbers. Good stuff guys. I've always been confused by the history of the various references of the core speedmaster line; this definitely helps!
Eric is amazing, like the Rainman of Omega reference numbers.
My late father bought one Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in 78 (not sure its exact spec), he gave it to me in 2005 a few months before he passed away as a wedding gift, am still wearing it today and is so proud of it

The moon landings were faked by nasa. It's common knowledge nowadays but you might be an old guy who believes everything he's told. Research geocentricity and watch a video called 200 proofs the earth is not a spinning ball by Eric Dubay.

I loved this video so much I asked my girlfriend to watch it with me. I'll give her credit: she dug in and didn't quit until the fourth mention of "dash".
I love Hodinkee but, no joke, that guy literally put me to sleep. Like, I actually fell asleep, woke up, and the video was still playing.

Eric, please pay no attention to what people have to say. Your expertise rings through loud and clear here. I have taken to watching this video once a month or so to keep myself educated on the long and impactful history of the Speedmaster. Thank you for taking the time to research all of these facts and keep the memories of the Speedmaster alive!
Just when I thought I was learning about watches, I realize that I know nothing. Very informative! Loved this. I'd love to see more of these much more frequently!
I played this to my daughter so she could go to sleep. It worked.

Best watch video ever! I've watched it a dozen times. Thanks for sharing Eric and Ben!
Eric and Ben great job , Love the history of these watches, So very collectable today and will keep appreciateing in value. Love the 2915
Ben sums up the Speedmaster perfectly. Great watch that is at home in any collector's gathering.
I love this guy. Great knowledge.
I love Mr. Wind such a legend in the vintage watch world.
Great video! Whole history of Speedmaster in 10 min. Thank You!
Great tribute to a great time piece. I proudly own a light blue version that I cherish as one of my favourites in my collection
Informative video. Thanks for sharing. The first 145022 Speedmasters with 861 movement had the metal Omega logo on the dial and 1039 bracelet. They looked like a 145012.
I love this series, keep these episodes coming!
I’ve come back to this video after first watching it years ago when it came out. Totally different perspective now that I’m more educated and can appreciate the rarity and the history of some of these models. Just like back then, though, aesthetically I prefer the older, pre-professional cases. There’s something about the slimmer lugs and no crown-guards that’s more representative of a chronograph design than the later cases.
I can listen to these two talk all day !!
What a watch....truer words have never been spoken...wanted one as a kid...finally got one. Now I want to get watches for important relatives. I'm set.
Impressive knowledge on Omega Speedmaster.
Oh man you guys should definitely do an episode on just the collectors speedmasters. There's so many good ones. My favorite is the speedmaster rattrapante. The first split second with the troublesome history. I don't think enough credit goes to this particular watch. I firmly believe that this watch is very far ahead of its time, in fact I don't believe we've gotten that far yet. Someday the speedmaster 3540.50 will get it's credit, and it's history will turn into a positive, and hardcore omega collectors will definitely look for this watch. There pretty easy to find right now for incredible deals, easily the best deal in all of luxury watches period with a complex mechanism cheap to service. It's beautiful. People complain about the weight, but I love heavy watches, after all time should never be taken lightly.
Nice one, Archie. Great vid!

Why are people being so negative? This guy is awesome! The biggest Speedy-nerd on the planet!
MANY Thanks DAFFIDAVIT for your reply. I have possessed 4 Speedmasters, but i still love My Daily Ticker, the 1957 "Replica" from the" MISSIONS" Valise. As close as i can get to a CK2915-1, but still a Goodie!!!
Awesome vid, thanks for this.
I liked the details in this video.
I’m glad they made so many, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to afford one
And here I am, struggling and making math to buy a speedy reduced, the poor brother from the line up. This vid is both pleasure and torture

Speedy is just an amazing watch! You can't go wrong with it.
love the speedmaster
before i watch it im gonna say i love it!!
I recently bought the 3861 Speedy Pro. While I find the history fascinating my preference is for the newest innovations. Co-axial escapement, silicon hairspring etc. I also bought the blue face/red hand ‘57. Now that watch is a stunner with an arguably better movement than the 3861, though an automatic. My favourite of the two is definitely the 57. This is one very nice watch.

+logwind What you have here is one of those Speedmasters which were made in the 70's with a digital display! They're not really that collectible as most watch enthusiasts want either the original Man on the Moon Speedmasters, or the recent reduced or newer models.

Omega expert: I wouldn't sell this for over 2,000. A nice vintage Speedmaster would easily go for double that.
Guest speaker is super boring but the content is phenomenal. Really enjoyed hearing about the full history. The speedie represents one of the most historical pieces but not often enough is the history behind them really surfaced.
Eric, what an encyclopedia would sound like if it could talk. Great info though 👍🏾
I am glad that I have one of the last 321 movements. I bought it new in 1969 just before Neil landed on the moon, but the watch was actually made in 1967.

John Cross does this mean my 1968 speedmaster that broke Down in 1985 and has sit in a drawer since then, might be worth repairing? I wore it accidentally in a sauna and the repairing offer was more than a new watch.

@@silvercornuto777 Well, the offer back in the 80’s was approx. $1500 so I don’t Think it is cheaper now. But I have found a repairshop that Will make an offer. If they Can do it for Les than $ 1000 I might go on. Hopes are not High though.🥲

Do you have a similar video on the Omega Seamaster Lineage?
I recently purchased my first Speedmaster Professional and couldn't be happier. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the production date though. Watch is a 145.0022/345.0022 with bracelet 1171/633 and serial beginning with 3558. According to charts I've found online the watch was produced either 1972 or 1977. Do you know how I can verity the actual production date?
I have to agree with what they say at the end. I have my speed master professional for 26 years now and don't even think about getting a new watch. I'm done with mine! Great reliable watch.

Great vid Can you do another one with Nautilus plse?
Can somebody please help me. What exact reference Speedmaster did Jack Swigert use to time the 14 sec burn? Can’t find it anywhere. Thanks.
So Happy with my... Corgeut Moonwatch 😉...looks great maybe some day I will feel comfortable buying the real thing. And I like the voice and the way the guy explain, not complaining.
I bought a modern Speedmaster a few years back and for some reason I didn't appreciate the watch. I eventually sold it off for modern pieces. I may have purchased it because I thought I needed a Speedmaster in my collection, I am not sure. Now several years later, I have really grown to appreciate and better understand vintage watches. I decided that a 1970s 145.022 (861) Speedy would be a great wearable vintage watch I could really enjoy.
Thank you for the insight into the Speedmasters great history, I learnt a few things from it. It certainly is a watch to own and love, I have a couple, but my favorite is my '65 Ed White' ST 105-003. I could do with a service but still holds good time, to a couple of seconds a day. Not bad for a 57 year old watch?
Can someone please help me! What exact reference Speedmaster did Jack Swigert use to time the 14 sec burn? 321? 861? Thanks.
Great video
A vintage Speedy caliber .861 with the President Bracelet... so damn awesome!
Content is great; this is my next watch. He's lucky enough to sound like Ray Stantz from Ghostbusters. Once you hear it, you can't un-hear it.
I have two omegas, One seamaster blue wave dial. And a speedmaster blue dial tripple date. The speed master in my fav but i only use it for special ocashions. Everyday watch is my seamaster.
Love a nice beat up (well worn) Speedmaster!

I don't know what it is about these but the indices markers and small bracelet links don't seem like they "line up" to me.. the way the hour markers are sunk between two planes make it look misaligned to me at certain angles.. the same with the small polished links.. they look offset to me... am i imagining this or is like optical allusion? contrast this with a dial that has a metal plane and applied markers with 3 link bracelet.. there's nowhere that lines don't "match up"... I want to love this but I need help with my ocd!
I woke up. Got this recommended by YT. Sleepy time again Woo!
The expert fella there, he was magnificent! All those numbers and models and oddities and never a slip up. He knew his onions and really enjoyed the fact that he did. I am even considering buying a new Speedmaster now. What’s the latest model’s numbers? Thanks for the vid as you can tell I enjoyed it.

Great video. I also made a full review on the moonwatch on my youtube channel, but this one is also great. Just in a different perspective
Is the 40 mm version relevant in the history of the watch? Because on my understanding the Speedmaster Racing was the one used by rally drivers
what watch is Ben wearing?
