The Joy Of Slow Living: Why We Chose To Trade Hustle Culture For A Simpler Life

Slow Living can be challenging. We live in a world that constantly bombards us with messages that glorify busyness and the hustle.
It's fair to say Gabby and I used to feel like we needed to keep up with this way of life. As a result, work became our priority over things that bring us joy.
However, after a shock redundancy, everything changed. We had no choice but to downshift... So we bought a narrowboat and moved onto the canals to live slower.
Since then, we've chosen to embrace a simpler lifestyle. Concentrating less on our careers and more on what makes us happy.
In this week's video, we discuss what slow living means for us, from spending time outside in nature to having the time to cook nutritious meals. Slow living is all about balance.
As always, thank you for watching & we'll see you next time

ABOUT US
We're Jack and Gabby. Since 2019 we've lived an alternative lifestyle travelling the canals of the UK.
Truthfully, we had wanted to find a slower, more simplistic way of life for a while. But, it was a shock redundancy that gave us the final push. We stumbled across boatlife and haven't looked back since.
Living on a narrowboat is not without its challenges. For example, the lifestyle is fully off-grid so we have to manage our resources such as power and water. For us though, boatlife has provided that 'real' life that we were desperately craving.

Thank you so much for watching this week's video, it's something a little different to our usual boat building vlogs. Has the spring weather been encouraging you to spend more time outdoors in nature? 🌿 J&G xx

Just watched your latest video. I love the idea of slow living. Being connected to nature. I just watched a short video yesterday about ‘grounding’. Walking out in nature barefoot to ground yourself. I used to run around as a child barefoot out in nature and it always made me feel wonderful. I think we need that now more than ever. You get stuck in the everyday rat race. Slow living is a great way to get away from that. Truly enjoy watching you two. Peace and love from the US.

Hey Elaine, thank you so much for comment. I'm currently reading The Way Home by Mark Boyle and he talks about deliberately walking barefoot... To feel the ground and be more conscious about how you tread... Thank you for watching :)

Reminds me of the story of the businessman and the fisherman One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish. About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. “You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” said the businessman to the fisherman. “You should be working rather than lying on the beach!” The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, “And what will my reward be?” “Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!” was the businessman’s answer. “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, “You will make money and you’ll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!” “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman’s questions. “You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!” he said. “And then what will my reward be?” repeated the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. “Don’t you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!” Once again the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?” The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won’t have a care in the world!” The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”

Lovely video and message. I do so understand what your saying, I hate my job and just before I start my 2/10 shift I love to take my dog for a walk through the woods down to the seashore it's so relaxing to hear the birds and listen to the wind and the sound of the sea. Your right slow living. Slow living maybe poorer financially but much, much more richer in other ways. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

You are so right. There is so much out there to enjoy at a different pace. When it came time to cease working I moved a continent away, from the non stop stress of Johnanesburg to the greater tranquility of northern Thailand. Learning to speak another language, badly, savouring different foods, being able to walk in temples in the city and full on nature only minutes away from home have so greatly contributed to a much better quality of life. Watching your vlogs is always a tonic and I thank you for the wisdom and joy that they contain.

We’re building a homestead on 2.5acres to try and live more intentionally from the land, and teach our children too as well. It’s lovely to see you foraging for so much - being in the middle of a crop farming area here in Australia there isn’t much to forage as most of the area is regularly sprayed with pesticides. We’re hoping to change that in our little pocket by setting up a permaculture food forest to encourage biodiversity and provide for our family. If we all do our bit to slow down and provide for ourselves away from the supermarkets we’ll all be richer for it in other ways.

What you're doing sounds incredible - such a lovely way to bring children up too. All the best with setting up your own permaculture food forest - that sounds amazing. Are you going to document your journey? Something we'd love to watch and be inspired by ✨ Our dream is to be self-sufficient one day!

Slow living vs hustle Culture is a better way of saying it. It's definitely not "simple". In hustle culture, people do, maybe, six different things. They repeat the same six things day after day. On their days off they spend the time "relaxing", like they do between supper and bed. Slow living is a life of constant learning, experiments, and new experiences. One needs to have skills in a multitude of things.
