Prepping for winter on our narrowboat by gathering this free WILD superfood
This week we’re prepping for winter on our narrowboat by foraging this free wild superfood.
As we’re coming towards the end of summer, and starting Autumn, it’s the perfect time to harvest nettle seeds. They’re little powerhouses of goodness and packed full of energy to give a much-needed boost during winter months. We go through how to pick them, how to process and store them and how best to eat them in the winter!
If you enjoy this week’s episode, are feeling kind and would like to support the channel, you can buy us a coffee on Ko-Fi and we'll be eternally thankful! Thank you to everyone who has bought us a coffee before - you’re support keeps us making films like this one!

Hey everyone! We're curious..... have you ever tried nettle seeds before?! Jack has a tendency to snack on them as we walk down the towpath, and now we can have them all year round :) We think they'll be especially needed this winter with our new tiny life here in December! xxx

You didn't say what they taste like. Why waste the leaves by the way - nettle soup! (the only way I've ever consumed nettles), and then a long time ago. They don't grow here in the tropics.

@@user-xw6wj2qh5n they have a fairly nutty flavour. The leaves aren't good to eat this time of year. As they get older they grow more bitter. Soup and teas are best made with the younger growth in spring
I wanted to let you know that stinging nettles are medicinal. They are anti-inflammatory and that's how they relieve arthritis pain and muscle pain. They are also one of the most nutritious plants on the planet! If you rinse them with hot water the little stingers will melt away like sugar crystals. They are good in a salad or cooked up like greens. I'll bet there are lots of great plants in that area! People just forgot. A hundred years ago people knew. Love your videos! 💕
Not me, walking past a MASSIVE area of nettles on my daily walk, completely oblivious! Thanks for opening my eyes to the treasure on my doorstep, can't wait to get foraging💛
My favourite quote so far… “I’m at one with the nettles… ow ow ow!” lol 😂

Nettle soup is also said to be really nice
I love your foraging tutorials. I hope you continue to do those. I really want to learn more about foraging for food.

We love making these sort of videos, thank you - we'll definitely be sharing more foraging and cooking content this year ✨
Hi. Don’t eat too many of the seeds,too much iron is not good for you. You know that the easiest way to harvest seeds is to cut the nettles,tie them in bunches and hang them to dry with a cloth beneath them ( not easy in a narrow boat but if you have a Shed ? ). Just give them a shake every now and again and the seeds will drop until none are left ( my Dad used to harvest nettles for the seeds and the leaves for Tea and dried leaves for adding into bread etc. Dad was a Harvester of everything and anything,Apple,cherry,walnuts and potatoes from the edge of the farmer’s field ( he had a few run ins with them for that )😂. One of the things that always surprises me with people who Drink Camomile Tea is they don’t even realise they probably have some growing 10 Feet from them ?. Dad when he was alive would go for walks for Hours,foraging as he went,definitely my favourite he would come back with was Wild Strawberries 🍓 and he would make Jam with them ( best tasting Jam ever 😊), he would come back always with something :- Cobnuts or Rose Hips ( omg Rosehip syrup is amazzzzzing ). Dad wasn’t a Hippie but he believed in All Things Nature and he was always prepared to try something new ( He once built a Large cabinet you sat in and it was wire wool encased in plywood ? It was I think meant to help you channel your inner energy,I was only 11 years old at the time and a bit skeptical but it was certainly extremely quiet in there and quite enjoyable and comfortable ). Love the videos ❤

Your dad sounds awesome!! Wild strawberries are such a beauty when you find them, tiny little flavour bombs. Gabby declared the other day 2024 is the year for expanding our homemade foraged tea supplies, nettle leaves will definitely be in there! Rosehip syrup is just the best isn't it.... can't beat it drizzled over vanilla ice cream! Thanks for watching ✨✨
Never tried nettle seeds, might do now. Thank you.

The shots of Green "Arti" going along the canal are lovely. She was meant to be green, she's in tune with the Canal.

Not by the time they're seeding, the leaves become very bitter. Best to use the new growth in Spring for tea

I knew that nettle leaves were good for you but I didn’t think about the seeds! Nettle tea is good for essential vitamins and minerals too, so maybe next time dry the leaves as well!

Fascinating, thank you. Nettles aren’t something I’d considered eating before but the seeds look more innocuous than the rest of the plant!

Still have to be a little careful picking them to not get stung, but they're a brilliant free superfood!
I haven’t seen any elderberries yet, I usually like to make a cordial for winter. Another great episode.
So interesting, loved the vlog, thanks for posting looking forward to next weeks. You have a great natural way of life.

Stinging nettle is a very important plant, our popular butterflies Red admiral, Small tortoiseshell and the Peacock butterfly and the Comma butterfly lay eggs on the nettle so the caterpillars feed on the Stinging nettle makes me wonder why people don't grow Stinging nettle in the garden. xx

Hi Jack&Gabi hope u r well? I read in news about a new law, and wanted to now if u heard it too or even if this is true.. It says that from this winter people r not allowed to have wooden burners on their narrow boats. Do u know anything about it? Please share some information
@thistinylife
10 ай бұрын
Hey Anna. The law is about the type of fuel burnt in woodburners, rather than banning woodburners themselves. It's to try and tackle air pollution - and so you can still burn smokeless fuels 🔥
nooo why would you compost the leaves?! make tea, soup, cordial!
@thistinylife
10 ай бұрын
We love to make soup and tea, however, by this point in the year the leaves are older, tough and often too bitter. The best time for soups and teas is after the new growth in spring
