How I Stopped Comparing My Life & “Success" To Others | slow living & minimalism

A little video about how to stop comparing yourself to others and start living life on your terms - a new definition for how to be "successful" in life | slow living, simple living & minimalism.
It's true that it's more difficult than ever before to compare ourselves and lives to others. We have exposure to the lives of others on a daily basis, and although this new connection and insight can appear intriguing on the surface, the impacts of this can be more detrimental to us than helpful.
As someone who was always deemed "different" by conventional standards, I found this particularly difficult to step outside of the ordinary and see the positives to being unique. But now I can honestly say that since I have lived a life on my terms that's true to myself, I have never felt more happy and that's how I measure success.
I have adopted a slow living and minimalist lifestyle because it's what makes me happy each and every day. That's what it means to be successful in my eyes - living a life that is true and individual to you.
I really hope you find this video helpful and beneficial if you are struggling and need some advice as to how to stop comparing yourself to others.
Please like, share and subscribe if you haven't already!
Wishing you a happy and peaceful day wherever you are!

My idea of success is being a stay at home mom in my 20’s! I’m not a girl boss, I don’t make a lot of money. But I’m raising children and it’s the greatest joy of my life and fills me with meaning. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who think I’m wasting my potential. Children are looked upon as burdens when they are really. ..The greatest blessing. Cheers! Great video 💗🌎

Your comment resonates with me. I have always loved to be a homemaker or doing something creative. Just living the simple life and slow living. But being a homemaker speaks to me the most and is absurdly frowned upon in todays society. I am not made for this era it seems but still I am here so trying to be authentically me. Channels like this helps me feel not alone in this.

This is mindblowing. Our success shouldn’t be measured by a number in our bank account or being married by a certain calendar age, it should be measured by our level of vitality and happiness.

Reflection : it seems to be a contradiction in terms if you conclude after seing this video account that "success" should be measured by "happiness" and "vitality" and not with age and money ( Bank accounts ) : with age we invariably loose VITALITY and without money ( or with economic distress ) we can not be happy. May I suggest that if you want to "measure success" at all... then it would be noble to consider cultivating a "peaceful soul" a healthy body and a supportive social network ( either trough marriage or a friend(s) ).

I appreciate this very much. I’ve never quite fit in in life. Always liked my solitude. People can never understand this. Don’t watch tv. Don’t do social media. Have finally found my confidence to just allow myself to be me and be happy the way I am. My son has gone off to university and he’s so similar to me. He seems to already have the confidence to be happy the way he is. For this I am grateful. It took me almost 50 years to achieve what he has now. He’s found friends who are like him and he’s content. I’m blessed in life. Wish I’d seen this video years ago. Thank you.😊

The hardest person to be in in life is your authentic self..for someone so young, you have life sussed..some people take decades to have the realisation you have.. we are molecules and water passing through, enjoy each day,and have the self awareness to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you..

Just because there’s no one that I know of that’s in my position. Don’t get me wrong, I truly feel like I’m blessed, but comparing myself to the society I live in, some might think that there’s something wrong with me. I’m thankful that I’ve come across this video. Thanks for this lovely video. I needed to hear this. I’m an older viewer and after ticking all the boxes of work, family, rush and never stop, I can finally work part time and spend time on walks, reading and other introvert hobbies. However I often feel like I “should” be doing more. Especially as hubs is the opposite, always busy with work and projects. I need to remind myself that it’s ok to be content and to spend time on things I enjoy even if they are not seen as productive by society.

Thank you for sharing this!😊 It’s a difficult one when it comes to calming the instinct within us to constantly be “doing” as opposed to just “being”. I think the main thing is awareness when this feeling crops up, realising that it is just a feeling and you don’t have to act on it. I agree with you it’s okay be content and enjoy the little things and more often than not that can lead to us being more productive and feeling energised in the long run🙂 Wishing you the best!✨

What a great talk, I needed to hear that as a little reassurance to myself. It resonated with me and made a lot of sense as all my life people have tried to tell me I should be living my life this way or that way but I’ve always resisted. I’ve never conformed to what people expect & mostly done what makes me happy as we only have one life & I want to live it my way. This is not to say I don’t have moments that I question myself & wonder if I’m doing the right thing, have I become successful doing my own thing? Well I kinda thought maybe not but now after listening to you then maybe I have, thank you 👍

I love this video Holly! I relate to you, as someone who has always been slightly different than others since growing up, I often doubted myself. I’m not surrounded by much people (besides my family) who are like me. I grew up in a quiet but very loving home. We love our music, art and literature here and since being a child I never knew why I felt different, why everybody around me was louder than me, liked different things, acted different and so on. Now as I’m a little older I realize that I’ve always had the greatest privilege and blessing with my family. Not many people get me, but the ones that do, I hold close to my heart. My dream is to create a family like that on my own one day.

If there’s one thing that’s helped me navigate life’s ups and downs over the last few years, it was realising that authenticity to me, is living by my core values. For me, these were having freedom, treating others with empathy and being creative and as long as I’m living by these values (there’re some others but these are the main ones) and by my ethics, I’m staying true to myself. I had an awful life-screwing up experience about a year ago but the one thing that got me through it was knowing I did the right thing. If I’d give any ‘life advice’ to anyone, it would be to spend some time really working out what your values really are. Who are you, when you strip everything in life away, right down at your core? When you’ve worked that out, it doesn’t matter what anyone else or society says or when terrible things happen in your life, internally you’ll have inherent stability. And even if life knocks you off balance for a while, you’ll always rebound. Anyway, I know that all sounds a bit overly worthy or something but hopefully someone out there will find it useful. And as for being different… it would be a very boring and mundane world if everyone was the same.

  • @lagomholly

Thank you so much for sharing this, it’s genuinely resonated with me on such a deep level🙂 I absolutely agree that when you know yourself and what you stand for nothing can knock you off course and make you question who you are. Always acting with integrity and kindness whilst simultaneously executing your core values and morals will allow you to move through life and difficult times with grace. Of course it’s not always bullet proof and things may happen that still lead you to question your behaviour with things or whether you are accountable for acting poorly subconsciously, but when you act in alignment of your core values with everything you say and do no one can take that away from you. Absolutely loved this, what a brilliant way to summarise things. Wishing you the best✨

@@lagomholly I’m happy if you’ve found it helpful. 🙂 You're right though, we can still make mistakes and not act in the right way, particularly if it's over an extremely stressful situation or something we're gotten emotional about but having those values and ethics solidified in your head does keep you right-sized when the seas of life get rough. It's ok to make mistakes though, it's what we learn from them that's important. I do think that if there's a reason to this life, it's to learn and grow. The only way we can do that is by experiencing the hard situations or decisions in life and then reflecting and trying to understand how we responded to them. Going against the grain of 'normal' society is hard though. The vast majority of people are obsessed with externalised success, ambition, materialism and status but those things are vacuous - they just lead to a never-ending, empty desire for more. The good thing about knowing what your core values are is that it gives you an inherent purpose and those materialistic drives then become largely irrelevant. That purpose can take many forms; it may be to live simply, to find peace, to express yourself creatively or to do some good in the world. Whatever form that purpose takes, it's fulfilling because it's shaped by your values and therefore, it's intrinsic to you. That being said, unfortunately, we do still need to eat and be able to pay the bills!🤷‍♂️

@@mark_tolver thank you for sharing more of your wisdom here, I feel I could talk about this sort of thing for hours, if not days!!😄 I absolutely agree regarding making mistakes. I think it’s the way we look at making mistakes which is what makes it the most powerful - are we angry at ourselves for not being “perfect” and wallow in self-pity? Or seek it as an opportunity to learn and grow as an individual, with knowledge we can then share with others to benefit them too? I always look at mistakes with the latter mindset and no matter how bad something may seem or feel on the surface, there is always something I could learn from it for the greater good🙂 I also agree re how difficult it is to go against societal expectations and norms. But again you’re absolutely right it comes down to our core values that bring purpose, meaning and then subsequently the happiness we’re all craving, which can never be filled by things like materialism and status. Honestly Mark this has been such a refreshing insight and I appreciate your perspective and wisdom a lot here!☺️ Thank you for this and taking the time to share your experiences✨

  • @mark_tolver

@@lagomholly Thank you for the kind words. I too could talk about this sort of stuff forever.🙂 We all have that craving for happiness, that lack that people seem to try to satiate with external things which, at its core is most often a need for validation. I think it's better though, to think of it as a need for completeness, for fulfillment. That way, you focus more on the internal things that will get you there instead of the external distractions. Having a good idea of that sense of meaning and purpose for you as an individual is absolutely essential to getting to that place of completeness but I don't think it's still the full answer. We still need something more and I think that, somewhat ironically, is more external although in a different way. That ‘something more’ is in those connections that we have with other people but those deep connections rather than the many shallower ones, in the connection that we feel in nature or when a piece of music, literature or art really speaks to us. Maybe it's because these things are subjective and based on how we feel about them rather than them having a more rational basis that I'm struggling to articulate exactly what I mean. I think what I'm trying to say though, is that in the end, it's those things that make us feel deeply human that are the things we really need.
