    @@jp-us9rq briggs and Stratton does offer some good top tier engines,but the intek line are entry level. That's not saying that they're bad. Theyll run close to 1000 hours with frequent maintenance and valve adjustment. A fr651v is mid range for Kawasaki, but still would easily reach 2000 or more hours without anything but routine maintenance.

    The 170 and 180 both use 22x9.5 tires while the 240 uses 20x10 tires. The tread pattern on the 20x10 is better than the 22x9.5. The taller 22" tires may ride just a hair smoother,but the difference would be negligible. I'd rather have better traction.

  • @ciphercode2298

    @ciphercode2298

    The bagger would have a different part number because the 100 series use the edge deck and the 200 series uses the accel deep deck. The accel deep deck has greater capacity to cut because its 5" deep from front to back and has a much larger chute opening for better dispersion of clippings. Snow blade,blower,tow behind stuff is interchangeable though. If you get the accel deep model you can also opt for mulch control,which allows you to side discharge or mulch at the flip of a lever.

    Back in 2019, I bought an S240 with a 42-inch deck. This was a good comparison between the models, but one thing that was left out was the transmission. The S240 has a Tuff-Torq K46 which with a rating that is 25% better than the ones in the 100 series (100 through 160) John Deere tractors. One thing I use the S240 for is clearing snow with a blade. You are going to think this is ridiculous but I inherited a craftsman riding mower when I bought my acreage almost ten years ago. Its a 42" and I mow 3 acres and pull harrows on my driveway and turn around. Since I got the mower for nothing I've been trying a little experiment. This mower has NEVER had the oil or filter changed. Ever. Since we got it. I've had to replace every bearing on the deck, all the belts multiple times, the battery etc etc. If this thing can survive that and fire up perfectly every time I'm pretty sure a couple left over ounces of oil left in there after the quick change filter comes off won't hurt anything. Hell if I had that quick change thing I might have even changed the oil in mine once or twice. Lol.

    "The Kawasaki engine is better." You left out its size, HP rating, and cylinder count. Would be nice to know. I do like the idea of being able to start the engine without having to be at full throttle. I have an old Craftsman with the 24hp B&S V-twin. That engine is a beast. The deck rusted away, so it's pretty much a play tractor now. I bought a JD E-120 to replace it. It also has a B&S V-twin, but rated at only 20hp. Plenty for my use; having two cylinders for more torque was more important to me. Before getting it, I tried another Craftsman with a 21hp that had only a single cylinder, and it struggled noticeably going up hills. The wheel/tire setup on your S are what are on my E120. I kind of like what's on your E170 better, though. Thanks for sharing. Love watching JD lawn tractor talk. ;-)

    That S series I think is a paltry 17 or 18 hp rating. That is one of the reasons why I went with the E130. The Kawasaki may be a better engine but there were far too many positives over negatives concerning the E series. Run synthetic motor oil and use ethanol treatment and your Briggs engine will never have an issue. Besides, John Deere even sells a conversion kit for 40 bucks that replaces that stupid EZ oil change with the conventional system that the S series uses.

    JD has been doing a 'special edition' model for years now, they just don't call it that anymore. You typically get bigger rims/wheels, a nicer seat and fenders along with the vtwin. Now you need to be getting an S170/S180 to get everything instead of middle model. The seat and wheels are basic models on the 200s, although the tires are supposed better than the ones on a 100. The 200 includes the Accel Deep deck and Kawasaki, and let you speed-mow while achieving a commercial quality cut.

    This guy is absolutely full of it when he says on the E170 that the filter holds the majority of the oil! It actually holds only .76L! The total oil capacity of that engine is 2.6 L so in actuality when you change just the filter you are only replacing a small amount of the oil. I have a E160 which has basically the same engine and the way I do it is I installed a drain tube on the side of motor opposite of oil filter and I first drain all the oil. Then I remove the filter and once Im sure oil is out I close off the drain tube. Then I install a new oil filter then top op the other almost 2 quarts of oil and Im done. Some guys switch the entire 30 second oil system out and run the smaller oil filter. I have read that these engines run a higher oil pressure so Im unsure if the little filter is adequate. Also the larger oil filter helps cool the motor. I live in Canada and these damn filters are 70 dollars! Im going to research if there is another filter that will work in its place that is cheaper.

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzread.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

    1. It appears that the E170 has larger diameter tires and wheels, front and rear, compared to the S240. 2. Belt drive: Do both units have a single belt drive, or does one have a belt that drives the deck, and another separate serpentine belt that drives all spindles ? 3. Transmission: Is the transmission serviceable by the owner/user after "x" number of hours on the hour meter, or is it unable to be serviced by the owner/user ? I mention this because my wife's L130 (from parents estate) has a singe belt, and a lot more noise and vibration, compared to my same-era GT235, which uses a two-belt drive system. L130 has a non-serviceable transmission, compared to the GT235, which is serviceable.

    The regular oil change models will leave dirty oil in the pan too, maybe not as much but it shouldn't matter so long as you're changing the filter. I don't mind paying the extra for the quick change filter either because it's so easy to change as it actually takes more like 10 seconds to change it (after the first change). I also change the oil in my car myself so one less damned thing I have to screw around with.There's also a conversion kit available for like $20 if you want to convert it to a regular change system.

    I’m an S240 owner and I can tell you the S240 is just a 100 series with Bling. The 100 series is not a great series, unless you actually move up to an X series. Are the spindles in the S240 100 series quality or are they X370? I have been through 3 spindles on my S240 in 3 1/2 years of ownership. I take care of my machines, I grease the spindles, and I only have 125 hrs of use on the machine: no reason any mower should have 3 spindles fail. If you want a JD that will actually compare to the great JD machines of old you have to jump to the X370. It has the FS600V Kawasaki motor and the K57 Transmission. That’s the combination you want, even the X series with the K46 transmission is an average machine that no one should be paying that type of money for. John Deere has become the Harley Davidson of Lawn Mowers. Greatest marketing a company could have where people buy because of the name. The actual entry level product is poor and overpriced. My recommendation for an JD mower is the X370, but at those price points you might as well look at the Kubota brand, Kubota is for entry level machines what JD used to be. Good entry level machines that last a lifetime. After my experience with the s240 I will never buy another JD product again. The money you spend is not worth it.
