Brent anything I need to know about my S240 I watch all your videos! You are the best

Brent, this is without question the best review I have seen on the S240. I learned more from you in 20 minutes than I did from my local John Deere dealer. Can’t thank you enough ... you also convinced me that this is the mower I need and will be purchasing.

I have owned the same rig for 4 years. Never have had a problem. My mowing area is 123' x 158' = 19,434 sq feet. It takes me 45 minutes to mow and I'm 75 years old with nothing else to do. I change blades twice a year, change oil and filter in the spring (synthetic blend 30 weight) and I use a Marine fuel injector cleaner in each gas can. I have owned almost every other brand and only the JD is a joy to drive.

Great review! I purchased a S240 this year. I installed the grass catcher on it as well. Love the mower. My only complaints are that with the grass catcher and the position of the filler, it makes it extremely difficult to fill the mower with gas without making a mess. The government mandated spouts on the cans don’t help either. Other than that, I love the thing!

@@WesternEquipment It is just over half acre. Mostly flat. I was between the x350 and this. Drove the x350. Seemed too big for my yard. Drove this. Felt just right. Also all the comforts of the x350 are on this. Cant really beat that!

I bought one in 2015, it has 200+ hours on it. It has the 42” deck. The Kawasaki engine is very quiet. Mine has a one piece fwd/rev(heel/toe) pedal and I would prefer the two separate pedals. It’s a good mower, very good fuel economy. The engine seems to not run at a high rpm but it will walk right on through tall grass with no bogging down.

I've owned my S240 since 2017. Best rider I have ever owned. I've had Allis Chalmers, Snapper, Husqarna Poulan Pro and I will only have John Deere for the rest of my life. (I bypassed the reverse button) I do wish that the transmission engagement was by a pull switch or leaver on the dash because I have a balance problem due to diabetes. Dave, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience.

Yeah, but it is an upgraded K46. Tuff Torq rates the K46 variant in the S240 as having 30% more capacity than those in the E100 series. Tuff Torq has like 30 different K46 variants that are OEM order/specification options, including charge pumps, steel vs powdered gears, drain/fill plugs, etc. The base K46 is not great for much. Deere specs a better K46 than most. Yes, it is still a K46, but the one in the S240 is better than most. Still not a super heavy hauler, but a good variant with decent life under normal light use.

@@turbodieseldumptruck Get Deere's hydraulic fluid out of it and put in 5/50 synthetic at 50 hrs . Any "spec up" they would do is negated by their BS factory trans fluid, against the recommendations of Tuff Torq. Won't take the heat nor will it properly lube the ring and pinion.

I have the S240. love it, no issues and it cuts like a champ. I am doing the yearly maintenance on it now and getting the kit. I did not know about the 8 hr oil change. but it is going to be now. I have lube my spindles and front wheels. this was a great review

My next mower is definitely gonna have an electric pto. My pto lever has become bent enough over the years that my blades aren't coming up to speed. I'll get it ordered tomarrow maybe,but it looks painful to replace.

Great review!! Do you think I need to go higher than the S240? My yard is about 15,000 square feet, back yard is a hill but not real steep, and I deal with a ton of leaves in the fall. Plowing my driveway in the winter would be great. I am leaning towards the S240 but wonder if I should go to the X series due to my slight hill and having the deeper deck for the leaves.

If your are looking at plowing your driveway then I would look into the X series just for the added frame strength and the better front attachments like the snow blower and front blade. Also once you jump to the X370 you get the upgraded transaxle which will be better for those hills. The X330 and X350 will have the same transaxle as the S240 so you're mainly gaining frame strength and better attachability there. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Only issue I’ve found with the deck lower handle is I inadvertently hit it a few times going too low for my cut height. Otherwise nice even cut.

Looking at the s140 and 240 have about an acre to mow that is uneven and a bit rough in spots would the 200 series be better option over the 100 series

They are going to be very similar and not much change in ride quality. I would look at a X350 or higher if it were me if you are looking for a more comfortable ride. If that is not an issue than I would go with the S240 for the better deck.

Thanks for an outstanding, informative video. I just ordered one of these yesterday. Hard to find now! One thing I didn't see covered in the video, how do you determine the level of fuel, since the gas tank is covered now? Is there a gas gauge?

There a fuel gauge right below your seat. It is a float gauge that is easy to see whether you are on or off of the mower.

I Just took delivery of a 2022 S240, my first riding mower ever. I was a bit overwhelmed until I watched this great videos, thanks for taking the time to post this! Initial thoughts its a good look machine, hopefully it gives me some trouble free years. I will say the entire hood and service panel assemblies are incredibly chintzy! Im disappointed honestly. The clip that holds the service panel was broke upon delivery or I unknowingly broke it. Either way I’m still shocked how cheap these area’s are constructed.

All these John Deere toys my family and in-laws keep giving my kid are going to make me have to paint my Craftsman green and yellow because John Deere just doesn't have a nice throttle system. My Craftsman has a hand throttle that you can bump forward to cruise control it's always in cruise control but it's got a mowing speed if you just push forward Bam cruise control mowing speed same every time so easy.

How would this do on hills? I your opinion is this good on hills or is there another mower in this price range that would be better? Or would after market tires such as super lugs be able to be put on this for better traction? Thanks for the excellent video! I always tell people to look for heavier framed mowers when dealing with a ton of hills like maybe into the X300 series. As far as adding aftermarket tires, as long as they are the right size to fit you current wheels you should be ok. Thanks for watching!

Question: I got the S240 48 inch mower and I’m trying to find out if it’s possible or if there’s a bagger that’s made without the blower for the 48 inch model? While at the dealership was convinced the 48 inch model may be better and got it but now I’m concerned that I’ll have to pay double the price for the bagger after having already used the machine.

Unfortunately, the 48" deck does require a blower because of the type of deck it is. This is a deep deck and handles a ton of material at once so it needs the blower to push the material back to the hoppers.

I think it totally depends on the amount of hills and the grade you are mowing on. The X-Series does have an upgraded transaxle that has shown to have some upside over the S240. I would suggest seeing if your local dealer would let you demo both to see which one works best for you. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Brent. Great job. I have really been hooked on your videos for ZTR’s and lawn tractors. I just purchased a corner lot in town that is almost a half acre. All flat. All Bermuda. I really had in mind to get a Z335 (my neighbor has a Z235). But I am figuring out that I probably need to bag the lawn periodically. So I am finding it hard to get past the ugly suitcase weights required on the Res ZTR bagger. So I am now leaning to my next fav, the S240. Does the bagging system for the S240 come off and on easily since I won’t leave it in all the time? Are these two mowers overkill for what I will be taking care of. I may be mowing the residence right next to my lot as well. It’s just as big but has lots of flowerbeds and trees (in laws yard). Any suggestions for the right mower would be appreciated. I bleed green and used to sell JD farm equipment in Sumner County KS. Thanks!

@@douggracy2909 for your bagging needs consider getting a cyclone rake. They're self powered,easy on and off,fold down and hang on a wall when not in use. Everything on them is high quality and the company has great customer service. Made in America too.

Mine is a 2017 with 330 Hrs. Kawasaki engine is the best part of these little machines. You won't regret it. Service that K46 Trans with 5/50 synthetic after 50 hrs. Deere puts hydraulic fluid in 'em from the factory which IS NOT recommended by Tuff Torq (trans manufacturer). Not a simple task as you have to remove the trans to do it, but you will notice the difference in response right off. Deere says it is a "non-servicable" unit. Won't make it much past 200 hrs if you don't, and by then you're out of warranty. There are plenty of horror stories around the net. This holds true for all their mowers up to the 500 series i believe.

@@thedadboddiaries8871 Unfortunately not, as Deere refers to the transmission as non serviceable. This is a widely known issue, so you should be able to find a local shop to do it. There are also many videos on K-46 service here on you tube. Well worth the effort.

What a great video! I was 75% sure I was going to get this model. Now, I'm closer to 95%. Thanks. Any thoughts on the S240 vs. the X350? I see it has better frame, electronics, deck, and warranty. I just can't seem to justify the $700 price difference.

I think it is mainly a matter of preference. Some people really want the electronic gauges, heavier frame, and foot lift for the deck. If those things are not a deal breaker then the S240 is a great option. If you'd like you could check out my X350 review on our channel to see those features in detail.

Haha, not sure how to feel about the nickname but to answer your question, if your mower has a fuel shut off valve then I wouldn't worry about starting it. If it was winter then I would say put a trickle charger on it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

It depends on which 42" deck you S240 has. Is it an Edge Dec or and Accel Deep Deck? It should say on the deck itself.

@@WesternEquipment I have the Accel 42” on my S240. I’ve been told by my local JD dealer that they don’t make a mulch kit or bagging kit for the S240. The 100 series obviously doesn’t fit on the accel decks and the 42” accel x300 series doesn’t fit either. Hope I’m not screwed. Same with the bagger :(

I totally agree.

9:27 after you engage the cruise control, what happens if you push the brake? Will that pause the cruise control and then automatically resume the same speed after you release the brake, or does that disengage the cruise control and then you have to manually re-engage the cruise control yourself?

Once you hit the break it will disengage the cruise and it has to be manually engaged again.

@@WesternEquipment ah, ok thanks. I think I'm starting to miss the days of being able to just release the clutch and go like on the D100, without having to press a drive pedal. I was wondering if the cruise control would mimic that driving style. Do you know if John Deere will ever re-introduce a low end lawn tractor with a transmission like the D100 had? I see they recently started offering gear transmissions in their compact tractors again like the 3043D.

Yes, the S240 got the same styling updates to the hood, it got the electronic fuel gauge and it got an engine HP upgrade from 18.5 to 21.5.

Excellent video. I am looking to replace my 23 y.o. LX173 and I think this is the one for me. My only concern is getting the deck through the door. I am looking at the 42 inch model, as I am certain that the 48 inch won't fit. Can you tell me the actual measurement of the 42 with the plastic cowl up....and then down? Thanks!

So with the plastic chute up it measures right at 50" at the widest point. I haven't taken a measurement with the chute down but if you remove the chute then the deck measure at 45". I hope this is helpful and thanks for watching!

So I bought this model 2 years ago. First thing I noticed is the gas tank is smaller than our previous JD mower. One problem is after about an hour it stalls, almost like it overheats. Let it sit for 15 minutes and it starts back up. I contacted JD but didn't hear a word back. I have the Kawasaki motor and run premium unleaded. Would it help to run b-12 in the gas?

This is interesting. I have never heard of one just stalling out like this. It may just be a carburetor issue or it could be a multitude of things. I would have your local dealer take a look at it in the shop. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Yes it can. It is very easily removable with only two round pins and two keeper pins holding it on.

The X700 series come with 9 gauge decks which would be the thickest in the tractor style mowers. Thanks for watching!

How is the mulching capability with 42 accell deep deck? We just ordered s240 today with 42 inch deck and mulching kit. Really hoping it does a nice job mulching.

When removing the deck, can you drive over it or do you have to slide it out?

You have to slide it out. Driving over would damage the pulleys and other components on top of it. Good question. Thanks for watching!

Another question for you Brent: Do the deck spindles have sealed bearings. I read somewhere they do? If that's the case, why bother with a grease fitting on the spindle? Thanks.

Yes, on some mowers the spindle bearing are sealed but you still need to grease to protect the shaft.

@@WesternEquipment Thank you for the reply. Everything I learned about this mower, I learned from your channel. I learned absolutely nothing from my salesman. He did find an S240 for me. That was it. After I made the payment arrangements, he loaded the tractor on my trailer for me, and walked off, saying: Let me know if you have any questions. Didn't offer to help with the tie down straps or anything. Disappointing.

are the front wheel bearings sleeve bearings or regular ball bearings?

I know the S series is a little more heavy duty than the 100 series as far as engine but what about the transmission are they the same on both models ?

Yes, they are the same except for the E100. The E100 has the cheapest transmission.

Well from my understanding the s240 has a 3 year warranty,better deck'better engine,better tyranny than the s100 series, correct?

Basically, but the engine is debatable depending on preference and the transaxle is the same as some of the upper model 100 series mowers.

After watching this video, I have come to the conclusion that I’ve been doing it all wrong. I need to paint my Tahoe JD Green and put a deck underneath it.

If it were me I would want the S240 so I had the extra deck capacity, heavier rear transaxles, and the Kawasaki engine.

So the s130 will be fine over the s240?

It depends on whether you want the heavier deck, heavier transaxles, and the Kawasaki or Briggs engine.

Did the S240 get a facelift in 2021?

Yes, it got the new hood design, the electronic fuel gauge, and an increase in engine HP from 18.5 to 21.5.

No, it’s not meant for that type of work. It’s a basic 100 series and you pay more for the Kawasaki engine.

I have the S240 with 42 inch deck and Kawasaki motor. I use it to pull a dump cart, mulch and bag clippings depending on the season. Also make sure to engage your PTO with your RPMs in midrange, then after it’s engaged increase your RPMs to full throttle. Electronic PTO puts a water hammer type of load on the spindles unless they have increased the quality of the pulley, it rounds out the pulley and it will start to just spin on the spindle in about 75 hrs of use depending on how much use it gets.

I think as long as you have tire chains on and just pay attention and not overload the machine you will be fine to move some snow. Just keep in mind this is a residential machine so it will have limits. Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

11:30 deck belt looks super loose. I understand the blades are not engaged.

It does have some sway in it when the PTO is not engaged, but once the clutch is kicked it it brings that belt tight. Good eye though and thanks for watching!

Or, you could just go under the dash, remove the two wires from the RIO switch, and wire nut them together.

The quality of deck is better on the S240 and then you have to make a choice between the Briggs or Kawasaki engine.

That's like asking you would you want to walk down the stairs or would you like to jump it's 10 ft it's your choice there's no way that's true that you should rather slam the lever on instead of gradually put it in place
