    Great videos. Can you include some examples of what angles are too steep to mow before you tip the mower? Also those grease zerks on the mower deck, I understood that those bearings are sealed and thus no amount of greasing will do anything to prolong the life of those bearings. One fix to prolong those bearing is to remove the seal on the top of the lower bearing and on the bottom of the top bearing and then the zerk can be greased to prolong the life of those bearings. Can you address this point as fact or fiction. Again good video, good explanation of the various JD models.

    Yes hopefully soon we can get some videos out on traction and tipping points. As for the bearings this is true on some models but the spindles still need to be greased to make sure to keep moisture from corroding the shaft that the bearings ride on. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

    I have a question my last mower was the la 145 had problems for the beginning with the carburetor and deck the deck rusted out rather quickly bought it from Lowe’s and they keep there product s out in the weather so my question is how much better is the s240 than the e160 the e160 seems to have equal to better options is the deck and transmission that much better on the s240 ? I have and 1.5 and cut it weekly what should I get and yes price is important thanks for your help!

    The three main differences will be the deck, engine, and tranaxles. You move to a kawasaki engine in an S240, move up to the K46 transaxles, and move up to an AccelDeep deck which is a higher quality deck than on the E160.

    Do the spindles have sealed bearings like the mojority of residential mowers? If so greasing them is pointless.

  • @WesternEquipment

    @WesternEquipment

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes there are but the grease on the sealed bearing spindles is more to keep moisture from getting in the spindle housing and damaging the shaft.

    it's a democrat safety switch. some democrat ran over a kid and mowed him to bits so the democrats force the mower manufacturers to make their mowers democrat-proof. just be glad they didn't add a riding mower tax, insurance requirement, licensing and registration as well, although that may be coming next. California is already starting to outlaw gas powered lawn equipment, one county at a time.

    @@mrbubetube I felt compelled to celebrate that California mandate the day I heard about it. I did so by going outside here in Florida and starting every gasoline-powered engine I had on hand. Those consisted of three pickup trucks, my Jeep, my wife's car (she was out of the country), two push mowers, and two lawn tractors. I let them run for about five minutes after the last one was started. ;-)

    I don't know what John Deere was thinking with their easy oil change. Was a standard oil change that hard? When I removed the one on my 170 it wasn't so easy, also considerably more expensive than a standard oil change, and from what I am hearing it only replaces a quarter of the oil in the engine. They say it isn't a problem but that sounds like marketing to me especially when warranty is only 2 years or 120 hours. That's nothing! You can get warranties longer on cheap electronics. Fortunately there is an easy conversion kit to turn it back to a normal system and it's cheap too. I know I plan to do it next oil change interval here. I've only noticed this feature on their residential mowers so I suspect it is clever planned obsolescence by John Deere so these vehicles don't last more than 5-10 years. Can't think of a single engine in the world where they say it is fine replacing only a quarter of it. You notice it isn't on the S240, or beyond mower either. I got lucky though with being given the mower so I honestly can't complain with free. If I were to go out and buy one of these mowers it probably be the S240 or this 160. I've got hills and I need better tires and I am having difficulty finding tires that fit the rims for the rear tires for the e170 since it has a larger rim. I noticed the s240 and x series have different tires. Are those superior for getting up hills over the stock ones on the e series?

    I'm waiting for the E170 myself. Will change to regular oil change after my 1st service. The quick system replaces .8 of a quart, so nearly half of the oil since it takes about 2 quarts but like you said, not sure why JD went to that. My yard is pretty flat so tires shouldn't bother me. I initially wanted the E160 but they couldn't get their hands on one anywhere here in Nova Scotia.

    Thanks for the comment and I totally understand the concern about the Easy Change System. The one thing I would point out is just how far engines and oil have come since oil change practices were implemented. With the advanced engines and superior oils we have now, I believe John Deere has spent the time in research to see that with the amount of use the mowers get that the Easy Change System does the job and helps out the residential customer that may not be as mechanically inclined and does not have the time to mess with a normal oil change. Just my opinion. I hope you continue to enjoy your E170. I would say that I do get good feedback with the upgraded tires on the larger models.

    @@WesternEquipment I'd go so far if you can't do an oil change on your mower you probably should just hire a mowing company. It's just like with car companies and these sealed transmissions. The fluid lasts the life of the transmission! Yeah because the transmission blew up in 100k miles because you never bothered to change it.

    Where I work we had a test truck from Volvo about 15 years ago we ran it 700,000 miles never and never changed the oil per manufacturer it had a fancy filtration system that was removed and cleaned every 35,000 miles and the oil was topped off other than normal Volvo issues injector cups the engine still started and ran great when Volvo got it back with 700,000 miles on it so if Deere and B&S did there home work on the filter media this system should work just fine given the end user follows recommended service intervals

    Got a new 2020 E160 about a month-and-a-half ago, my first John Deere... Formerly a Husqvarna owner. I am on my fourth belt in less than 2 months, in over 10 years I only ever went through two belts on my Husqvarna. the John Deere doesn't cut worth a damn, even with brand new John Deere brand blades, the gas tank is way too small, the engine is too loud, and there is no fuel economy. Selling this garbage at the end of the season and buying another Husqvarna.

  • @WesternEquipment

    @WesternEquipment

    4 жыл бұрын

    Something is wrong to have broken 4 belts in 2 months. Why don’t you take it back? Maybe you got a bad unit. We rarely hear those 3 things. Normally we hear that they are quieter, cut better and fuel economy is normal with similar tractor styles.

  • @RedboneUnincorporated

    @RedboneUnincorporated

    @@WesternEquipment the fuel economy is the least of my concerns, and I considered "taking it back", but that seems ridiculous. How does one return a machine that is two months old and has seen almost 60 hours?! Seems dishonest to me. No, I'll just eat this decision, and quit Deere. I'm pretty loyal to a brand if I don't have issues and it is a positive experience. I had every intention of purchasing a Husqvarna, Home Depot simply doesn't sell that brand anymore though, and I needed a new mower asap. Had I known there was a difference between box store models and "dealership" options, I would have got a 240. All that being said, everyone of my neighbors, except for the rich insurance dude, never replaced their old Deere equipment with another Deere, they have all gone for alternatives...maybe I should have seen that as a hint! Thanks for the response, I literally found this video looking for an explanation on the belt issue, so maybe I do have a lemon.

  • @WesternEquipment

    @WesternEquipment

    I hate to hear that about your mower and about your negative experience. I do think there is a knowledge gap about the dealer exclusives and the "big box store" models. So I am doing my best to try to get that info out there. Two more questions, are you leaving your spindle covers off when mowing and does the bad cut quality appear to be from the deck being un-level? If not I would say to check with your local John Deere dealership as they should be able to help with the belt issue being as that you have a 2 year/120 hour warranty with that mower and if the cut looks un-level I also have a video to help adjust this. Your local dealer should also be willing to demo you another model if you wanted to look into the S240 or even an X Series model. And if not then that is understandable too. I hope this is helpful!

  • @RedboneUnincorporated

    @RedboneUnincorporated

    @@WesternEquipment I do not leave the covers off, but I do have rough landscape and I wonder if I have the deck set slightly too low, thereby allowing it to possibly be shifted upon ground contact and potentially stressing the belt...my best guess, anyway. Thanks for the info, I will look into it. I really want to like this mower!
