The GREATEST ACCIDENT in San Diego Padres HISTORY

How can one bottle of Pepsi change the course of MLB history forever? Well, just ask San Diego Padres pitcher Ed Whitson, who in 1983, was about to flame out of Major League Baseball, and then, created his signature pitch that kept him in the majors for a decade longer... all by accident. This is the story behind the bizarre way that Ed Whitson developed his palm ball

Whitson is also known for fighting Billy Martin (his manager) late in the 1985 season after being scratched from his scheduled start. The two had an altercation in a bar in Baltimore that resulted in Whitson receiving a cracked rib, while Martin broke his arm, and was fired for the 4th time as a Yankee in his career.

Martin scratched Whitson because Whitson was pitching HORRIBLY at Yankee Stadium.. Rarely getting out of the 4th inning and an ERA well above 6.00.. He pitched decently on the road, but just could not pitch in New York. Even after the Yankees traded him back to the Padres, Whitson couldn't pitch in New York.. the Mets owned him at Shea Stadium.. and he pitched well against them in San Diego.

@@jimsturm2061 I remember it well.. they were doing everything they could to avoid pitching Whitson at Yankee Stadium. He'd pitch a good game on the road.. come home and give up 6 runs in 2 innings.

'I only have my palmball because a twist-off Pepsi-Cola bottle cap cut the middle finger of my hand,' Whitson said Tuesday, a day before his scheduled start for the San Diego Padres in Game 2 of the World Series against Dan Petry and the Detroit Tigers. So you were right, it was the glass bottles of the 1980s and those aluminum caps. Should have just used a bottle opener.

Ed’s brother Dennis was my boxing coach back in the 70’s. I remember during boxing practice, in an old building, downtown Erwin, Eddie would come watch. Eddie played Elementary School football for Rock Creek Elementary School. He could play any sport and excel. He was a tremendous basketball player in high school as well as baseball. He was as tuff as they come.

The palm ball. gone away just like the screwball and sadly the knuckler. I remember going to a Rangers clinic in 1982 where Paul Mirabella used the palm ball with limited success. I believe if mymemory serves correctly the pitcher used 3 fingers and a thumb to throw it. Or I might be thinking another forgotten pitch, the forkball.
