The CRAZIEST DEMOTION in Seattle Mariners HISTORY

In 1988, following a poor start to the season, Ed Nunez was demoted by the Seattle Mariners to their Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, the Calgary Cannons. As for how Nunez took the news... well, he didn't take it well. Not in the slightest bit

After this incident, Nunez never spent more than two full seasons with a single team again. He was released by the Mets around the end of the 1989 Spring Training and signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent soon afterwards. Then, after the 1990 season, he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as a free agent, then he was traded to the Texas Rangers midway through the 1992 season, and after that, he signed as a free agent with the Oakland Athletics before the 1993 season and was ultimately released about a month and a half into the 1994 season, ending his career.

Even his relatives couldn't talk any sense into him! He sure needed to grow up. All he had to do was fix a few things with his game in Calgary and he would've been back in Seattle in short order. I'm glad he wasn't rewarded for throwing a hissy fit.

He got traded to the Mets that year and did next to nothing..I was hoping he would show something to complement the fine staff the Mets had that year (league leading 2.91 ERA) but he barely pitched in Flushing.

He never had the makings of an All-Star pitcher.

This is very similar to what happened with a demotion with another Seattle team the Sounders in the NASL back in 1976. Goalie Barry Watling had gotten off to an awful start to the season giving up 12 goals in the first three games of the season & as a result coach John Best decided to bench him & replace him with Tony Chursky. What made this move shocking is that the previous season Watling was one of the top goalies in the league & the year before that he was named the leading goalie in the NASL & named to the All Star team. However instead of accepting a spot on the bench, Watling demanded to be loaned out to a club in his native England & Rotherham United of the 3rd Division agreed to a deal as they were going through a injury crisis with their goalies toward the end of their season. The Sounders didn't mind making this move as they told Watling to get some playing time before coming back to the US in the summer. Unfortunately Rotherham did not honor the terms of the loan and Watling only played twice during that period. What makes this even worse is that Rotherham could have used Watling as they had the worst defense in the 3rd Division & got relegated. Watling never played for the Sounders again after the loan ended & ended his career at Sheffield Wednesday. As for Chursky his promotion to starting goalie paid off as he became the league's leading goalie for 1976 & helped the Sounders make the playoffs after that terrible start to the season.

It's funny how he brought up Langston. Mark Langston was another Mariner who didn't get along with Dick Williams, to the point that Williams even trashed him in the book he wrote after he left baseball. Williams was crusty as hell, but some guys would run through a wall for him--even Reggie Jackson--and others hated his guts.

I literally finished reading that book earlier today. Williams' burial of Langston was brutal. Williams' burial of a lot of guys was brutal in that book, though.

Ah yes. The tale of the kid so gifted, it goes to his head. Hell if I was a baseball player, I'd love to be making the same amount of money and play against easier competition for a little bit.
