The STRANGEST BROADCASTING CONTROVERSY of the 1990 MLB Season

Remember when Fernando Valenzuela threw a no-hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a June game against the St. Louis Cardinals? Turns out, there was a giant broadcasting controversy involving ESPN during this game, where in St. Louis, they illegally showed the game, and chaos ensued as a result. This is a breakdown of the broadcasting controversy involving KPLR (Channel 11) and ESPN

I didn't know until today that a local person was responsible for putting the right game on. I had simply assumed that someone in a central location selected a bunch of feeds to get one game and a bunch to get the other.

If I had a nickel for every time there was a broadcast controversy involving ESPN and a no-hitter, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I was playing in an adult softball league, so I heard the last few innings on the radio. I don't remember seeing the game on ESPN, but then again, I wasn't home. However, listening to it on the radio was far better and a TV broadcast was unnecessary. We got to hear Vin Scully call the game, and as the crowd was a deafening roar after the last out, Scully says, "If you have a sombrero, throw it to the sky!"

This is very similar to what happened 4 years earlier with ESPN & their first ever World Cup. Before I go further, I should point out that the 1986 World Cup was covered by two different broadcasters when it came to the English language rights in the US NBC (who mostly covered weekend matches) & ESPN (who basically covered everything else). In addition to the weekend matches, NBC also was given the rights to air both semifinal games & the final. However because they were contractually obligated to show not one but two different soap operas (Days of Our Lives & Another World) during the daytime weekday slate & because both semifinals took place on weekdays, NBC was unable to show the semifinals of the World Cup. FIFA was about to tell American viewers that the only way they could watch the World Cup semifinals was in Spanish but at the last minute, ESPN unprompted decided to show both semifinals on their network. Both NBC & FIFA were absolutely livid with ESPN, NBC especially so since ESPN used NBC's camera crews & announcers (which included NFL play by play man Charlie Jones) to do this without NBC's permission. Unlike this, ESPN stayed with the broadcast of both World Cup semifinals even when told to stop by FIFA. Because of this controversy, FIFA rightfully decided that for future World Cups one American broadcaster would have the rights for English & Spanish broadcasts. For those wondering how those semifinals turned out, Germany beat France 2-0 & Argentina (with Diego Mardona) beat Belgium by the same score.

NBC could have pre-empted the soaps for two days to accommodate the World Cup semifinals. The problem was, doing so would have resulted in tons of angry calls from fans of the shows not understanding the importance of the World Cup and being selfish about it. Ironically, we NOW have seen CBS in recent years pre-empting daytime programming during the week for Champions league matches EXCEPT when such started at 4:00 PM ET (due to the period where the US is on daylight savings time but Europe is still on standard time) with the second legs due to the possibility of overtime and penalty kicks knocking out local and the CBS Evening news if such games went to penalty kicks.

In 1990, New York Met games were on WOR (channel 9) and a cable channel (I think at the time it was called "Sportschannel".. but they changed cable channels in the 90's a few times. Pretty much it was half of the games were on channel 9 and half on the cable.. Same broadcast teams for both. But only channel 9 games got Kiner's Korner after the game 😀 Kiner was a LEGEND. Both on the field and in the broadcast booth. Hall of Fame player, one of the greatest home run hitters of all time.. Some of his mistakes in the broadcast booth were legendary! Like when he kept calling Gary Carter "Gary Cooper".. or calls like "It's a long drive deep to left.. it's going... going... and Mazzilli catches it in shallow left field." Just look up "Kinerisms".. He made watching Mets games (especially when they had a BAD team) fun! Someone compiled a 3 hour video kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3um1diypJjeoNY.html

Another factoid about this pair of no-hitters that night, Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela were briefly teammates with the Dodgers, until Stewart was traded to Texas in 1983. What I'm trying to get is this also the first time one-time teammates pitched no-hitters on the same day .

Too bad you couldn't find KPLR's footage of this game given what you discussed here. This seems to be a headend issue and those still happen to this day from time to time. RSNs with multiple feeds sometimes show a game to a zone it's not supposed to go to.

I live in south alabama on the florida border. I have watched the braves play before the florida marlins were ever a thought. I am in the braves blackout area. After the marlins and rays became expansion team things got weird. If the braves were on espn the local broadcast did not show the game. Because i was in the braves blackout area espn would show the alternate game. We were supposed to get the home broadcast but got nothing, this went on for several years and hopefully is resolved now.

What's funny is that ESPN's practice at the time was to do only 2 feeds when they had non-exclusive doubleheaders... the Primary Feed, which had the main games, and the Alternate feed, regardless if your home game was at 7:30 ET or 10:30 ET. To have this incident happen meant one of two things. One was Cencom dropping the ball, and aired the wrong game at 6:30 (which would've been Red-Mets, when they should've aired OAK-TOR), and no one realized it, since either Reds-Mets or A's-Blue Jays can air in St. Louis no problems. OR 2) Once ESPN realized that Dave Stewart was on track for a no-hitter, they switched everyone outside of Oakland to OAK-TOR on Both feeds, and Cencom didn't realize ESPN consolidated the feed, since they got OAK-TOR from the start.

  • @brianoneill7186

If you had the alternate feed for one game, you had it for both. Reds-Mets should have aired in St. Louis.

Go to 9:28. That listing that JaguarGator showed that St. Louis was supposed to have gotten OAK-TOR, which along with MIL-SEA was the alternate game. That's why I speculated that either the headend or ESPN screwed up, and picked up the primary feed by mistake, or that once ESPN saw that a potential no-hitter was happening in Toronto, they switched everyone outside of the Bay Area to OAK-TOR, and the local headend didn't know until they got the phone calls about it.

  • @brianoneill7186

@@ElFuego35 That's not how ESPN did things in the 90s. They had separate feeds for 'A' and 'B' games, and, except for cut-ins when someone was going for a no-hitter or a record, there was not supposed to be any switching between feeds. St. Louis should have had Reds-Mets early, not A's-Jays.
