The STUPIDEST VOTING in NL Rookie of the Year HISTORY

In 1987, Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Chris James, after hitting .293 in nearly 400 plate appearances, got honored by receiving some votes for NL Rookie of the Year, being named one of the top newcomers in all of baseball. The only problem? You guessed it- James was not a rookie, and was not even the slightest bit eligible for this award. This is the story behind how something like this was even possible

Edinson Volquez was fourth in NL ROY voting in 2008 despite it being his fourth season. He had played the previous three seasons for the Rangers where he racked up 80 innings (has to be under 50 to remain eligible

Sure the Phillies were second in 1986-a full 21.5 games out (marking the first time since 1902 that a division or pennant race was decided by more than 20 games). The Phillies, like the rest of the NL East that year, was laid to waste by the Mets..it was only when injuries and Doc Gooden’s rehab that the Mets came back to the pack in ‘87.

Oddly enough baseball reference states James exceeded rookie eligibility limits in 1987, not 1986.

Chris James WAS eligible as a rookie in '87. He was on the DL which does not count towards being on the ACTIVE 25-man roster.

Same happened with Sandy Alomar Jr. He played for the Padres in 88 & 89 before he got traded to the Indians for Joe Carter and Sandy won AL Rookie Of The Year in 1990

Sandy did play on those years but only for a few games and four at bats. MLB rookie eligibility is weird but less than 45 days on the roster, 50 innings pitched, or 130 at bats and you're still a rookie

Both awards take a back seat to the Grammy for Best New Artist. When the 1985 nominations were announced, people were shocked that Whitney Houston was declared ineligible for the award because she performed a duet on a movie soundtrack the previous year. That led to a rule change, describing an eligible nominee as "a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." The 2001 award went to Shelby Lynne, who had already released six albums--ten years after she won the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist. As an aside, I thought perhaps you'd raise the question of whether Ichiro should have been considered a rookie in 2001.

Anyone should be considered a rookie in their first MLB season (minimum 45 games, 50 innings pitched, or 130 at-bats)

I have to wonder. Was this a "stupid vote," or a vote by a voter who was ignoring a stupid rule? Chris James was a rookie in 1987. He played 20 games and had 48 plate appearances in '86. By any standard of common sense, he was a rookie in '87. Benito Santiago had basically the same amount of playing time in '86, actually had a few more PAs, and yet he was eligible. Santiago deserved to win either way. But James should have been able to receive votes. A truly dumb happenstance of the "service time" rules came in 1988 and 1989, when Gregg Jefferies was called up by the Mets in late August of '88 and went right into the lineup and played fantastically, and got enough support for ROY to finish sixth, even though he would still technically be a rookie in 1989. He then played the '89 season and finished third in the balloting that season!

Yeaaaah... BUT, this was pre-internet days, access to information was more limited back then, I could see some sportswriter looking at the Sporting News seeing James's stats for 1986 and thinking he was still eligible... This would fall onto the guy who didn't validate it and get back to the writer to tell him he slipped up.

Wrong.... According ro BBREF James exceeded his rookie status in 1987. Rookies are considered eligible in the MLB if they have under 130 at-bats, under 50 innings pitched, and have less than 45 days on the active roster. The service time does not include days on the injured list.

Yeah, I was going to say, you have to start with a discussion of how rookie eligibility works in MLB, how players can make their major league debuts and still be considered rookies the next year, and how due to only regular season at-bats/innings counting, you can even get players winning postseason awards prior to their rookie year, like Randy Arozarena winning the 2020 ALCS MVP and Babe Ruth Award and then winning AL RotY in 2021, or K-Rod tying the record for wins in a single postseason in 2002 and then being a rookie in 2003.

'87 was a year of a possibly-juiced ball. It was very much a preview of the late '90s. Wade Boggs hit 24 home runs and only hit double-digits one other year in his career before or after. So no one really came off as an elite pitcher.
