The CRAZIEST PUNISHMENT in Chicago Cubs HISTORY | 1985 Cubs

Imagine being fined for missing work to attend the birth of your own child. Well, in 1985, that's exactly what happened with Chicago Cubs catcher Jody Davis, when the team and his manager slapped him with a fine for being there to support his family. And to say that there was outrage over this would be putting it lightly. This is the story behind Jody Davis and the bizarre fine

People nowadays don't remember this, but there was actually an MLB player strike in 1985. Unlike 1981 and 1994, this one was settled quickly, it only lasted two days, and the games were made up. I bring this up because this strike took place August 6-7 of that year, and the game in question took place August 8, the first day back. Could be a contributing factor to management's chippiness.

that strike also nearly led to a what if situation that we'd never see before or since. they only made up 1 game, and going into final weekend, blue jays were 3 up on the yanks with 3 to play. they were playing each other, so if yanks sweep, it's a tie. so we'd have a tie, but no idea if mlb would make jays/yanks play the missed game (which wasn't against each other) or just declare it a tie, make game 162 the winner take all game. and beyond that, gaylord perry was looking for win number 300, but had slumped so bad over last 5 starts yanks probably wouldn't risk it had they not lost the friday game to give jays the win.

@@mfm4205 Looked into that, turns out that's only partially correct. The Blue Jays only made up one of their two games against the Orioles. The Yankees actually did make up both of their games against the Indians. But, you are accurate in the situation set up at the end of the season because the Yankees had a game against the Tigers rained out on September 27. According to the New York Times article the following day, the plan was to make up both the Jays-O's and Yankees-Tigers games at the end of the season if it was necessary. The pitcher looking for his 300th win was Phil Niekro, not Gaylord Perry, but otherwise, you're right, he had 3 straight losses with a no-decision before getting that 300th win after the Jays had clinched. Despite some of details being slightly off, though, you made a very interesting comment, thank you.

A 13 game losing streak for the Cubs in June 1985 was a major contributing factor for their disappointing 1985 season. They also had a 7 game losing streak and a couple 5 game losing streaks in 1985.

@@TimEric4d3d3d3 The Expos played the Cubs in Wrigley on September 23 and 24th that year. Galarraga played both games. You'll note that Galarraga isn't holding Davis on, meaning that there must be a runner on 2nd. Unfortunately, both games had that situation, so I can't narrow it down further than that. That game on the 24th must have been entertaining, though. The Expos scored 12 runs in the 5th inning to take a 15- 2 lead. The Expos pulled their starter, Bryn Smith in the 6th, and the Cubs emptied their bench for some garbage time, and that's when the fun started. The Cubs, trailing 15-3 put up 3 runs in the 7th to narrow it to 15-6. The Expos came back with 2 in the 8th to make it 17-6. Those 2 runs ended up being important, though, as the Cubs scored 4 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th, before Jeff Reardon nailed down an unexpected save opportunity as the Expos won 17-15. Future Cub Andre Dawson had 3 homers and 8 RBI. Our man Jody Davis also homered, going 2 for 2 before being pulled early. If this footage is from that game, it would have been in the bottom of the 6th after he drew a walk to load the bases.

Hey jaguargator. Been watching for years now. Love your deep dives. Being a baseball enthusiast, I was excited to hear you going to do a baseball channel. But I'm feeling disappointed. Maybe it's because you're trying to crank out so many videos that the quality is taking a hit. I'm not sure. But being a young channel, I would have thought more well known events would be highlighted, like Armando Galarraga. Or Cal Ripken taking a day off with no heads up until the day. But, for instance, in this case a player gets a small fine for missing a game for birth of his son. It felt like it wasn't much of a deep dive. But rather fluff to extend a small story into a 13 minute video. It could have worked as a minute video if you dove into KZread shorts, but left something to be desired. I'm not sure if it's the topic selection, or the number of videos you're producing, or it could just be the case of trying to figure out the right style/fit for the baseball channel, that there's going to be misses. I hope you don't take my critique as me not supporting your channels. I will continue to do so. I just felt like I'd share my opinion of how I think this new channel is doing from the watchers (at least mine possibly)end compared to the other two channels
