The STRANGEST TRADE in Arizona Diamondbacks HISTORY

In 1999, the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired pitcher Matt Mantei from the Florida Marlins in exchange for Vladimir Nunez, Brad Penny, and a player to be named later. And it was the player to be named later that caused a ton of controversy, with the details of trade going back-and-forth and taking eight months to complete, and the Commissioner of Baseball, Bud Selig, having to get involved to sort out the mess, since the D'Backs thought they were giving away one player, and the Marlins thought they were entitled to someone completely different. This is the story behind the bizarre trade drama

I remember Mantei's first appearance with the Diamondbacks. At Texas he came in with a 2-0 lead in the 9th thanks to Randy Johnson. He got the first two outs easily. Them amazingly he walked three batters in a row and then gave up a bases clearing double to Mark Mclemore. Incredible. Of course he got better after that.

That i think ended up being a lose trade for the dbacks. Penny became one of the key pitchers for the 2003 Marlins.

There have been a few times where a player to be named later winds up being the player sent back-think Harry Chiti 1962 (of course it involved the Mets) being, in essence, being traded for himself.

I can understand the Marlins passing on Randolph. The PTBNL didn't pan out for them, but Penny turned out to be worth it for them.

George Allen coached the Arizona Wranglers of the USFL for one season. Clearly his spirit lived on in the desert, specifically agreeing to include the same “player” in two trades.

The DBacks messed up by including one player in trades with two separate teams.

JG7 left out the fact that Brad Penny turned out to be a key player on Marlins World Series team.

This is very similar to what happened between the Portland Timbers of the NASL & English clubs Aston Villa & Wolves in 1975. As part of their expansion season, the Timbers basically assembled a roster of mostly British players on loan from English clubs with the condition that those players be returned to their respective clubs in August when the English League started. This was a fairly common practice in the NASL at the time especially for expansion teams as the local talent pool of players was not very deep at the time & for many foreign players they viewed the NASL as a league to keep their skills sharp during the summer before heading back to their clubs in Europe or South America. However in their first season, the Timbers unexpectedly went on a deep playoff run all the way to the Soccer Bowl (the NASL's title game) & this really angered both Aston Villa & Wolves because the players they had loaned out had yet to return to England for the start of the English League season. Both clubs demanded that the commissioner of the NASL Phil Woosnam step in & order the Timbers to send back the loaned players immediately & pay both clubs compensation. The Timbers absolutely said no to this because they needed those players for the Soccer Bowl and defied the mandate to do so from the league office. It is no surprise that a few days after the Soccer Bowl (which the Timbers lost 2-1 to Tampa), the NASL fined the Timbers GM & coach a league record at the time $2500 for not only not returning the loan players on time but also for hurting the growth of American players by basically recruiting these players from the UK & persuading their clubs to do the loan deal. Because of this debacle, the NASL changed the rules the following season that required teams to have at least 6 Americans/Canadians on their roster & put severe limits on the amount of loan players from Europe & South America that teams could have (though the NY Cosmos exploited this rule big time by basically signing foreign players who were at the end of their contracts with their clubs back home).

oh, the abraham nunez age thing: at the time of the trade, hadn't been exposed as lying about his age, hence the 3 year gap. octavio dotel would get caught in 2000 as having been 4 years older than thought (going from key piece of the mike hampton to the mets trade to being converted full time to the bullpen by 2002 because he was 27 by then, not 23). once 9/11 happened, a ton of players then got caught lying about their ages. funny enough, there are 3 guys i know of who actually were younger than what was reported when they signed, 1 of whom is in the hall of fame (babe ruth), one who will be next year (adrian beltre) and one whom injuries destroyed a potential hall of fame career (jose rijo, which if you look up his minor league numbers and realize his last full season in the minors was what would have been his senior year of high school had he been in the states makes them that much more amazing)

something to note: back then, pitchers striking out over a batter per inning tended to be the exception, not the norm. a guy like mantei averaging over 13k per 9 was quite a big deal, and a reason my brother and i targeted guys like him in fantasy baseball back then (1999 was our first year playing, and despite only being 17 and 16 when the season started, the salary cap game we played, we came in top 250 out of 9000 plus entries). also, gregg olson had been a terrific closer from 89-93, until he got hurt. never really recovered after that. shame, considering at the time of the injury, in terms of age, he was ahead of mariano rivera 160 to 5 in terms of saves, barely to end up at 200 (217, to be exact).

So the Marlins system clearly ruined Abraham Núñez. A five-tool player like that, his potential was to the moon, their system clearly wrecked the lad.

Acquiring Matt Mantei for three players under any and all circumstances is suicidal. One of the all-too-many grossly overrated players that infested MLB from the late-1980s through the aughts.
