The Deconstruction Of Andy Stanley

Andy Stanley is one of the most well-known pastors in American Christianity. Known for founding North Point Community Church, the Catalyst Conference, and producing a number of resources for believers and church leaders.
In this video essay, I aim to lay out an understandable timeline for where Andy Stanley came from and how different events in his life have influenced how he approaches situations now.
This isn't a hit piece, which will disappoint some, but rather a video in which I present the facts I've discovered during researching Andy. My goal is to present that information and let the viewer decide. To assist in this endeavor I have provided a list of links to the full videos I used in this video.

About an hour in. The whole section where Andy is preaching that the church needs to be a "modern family" situation is absolutely wild. The issue for him isn't the fact that there is a gay homewrecker that tore apart his family who is trying to volunteer as a sort of deacon at one of his church plants, it's that the gay homewrecker's "partner" isn't divorced yet, so they need to do that before they can help out. Also, it frames the WIFE as being in the wrong, because she doesn't want the husband and his partner to be in the community, and then the church community grooms them into being becoming complacent and accepting of their sin. And it's presented as the most casual thing. Wild...

Charles Stanley was the first pastor I listened to when I was saved nearly 40 years ago. Isn’t it amazing that the son of such a faithful preacher can fall so far away from the tree? I’m sure Charles saw it but probably felt helpless. God hears our prayers - let’s all say a little prayer that God would convict him of his errors.

Since Charles Stanley was a fire and brimstone type of peacher, Andy went the other direction and became a rainbows and sunshine peacher, just like Joel Osteen. And just like Joel Osteen, Andy is a false teacher and should be outcast and shunned. I read Andy's last book and not only does it seem to be written by a teenager, there are so many contradictions and false arguments an no real coherent thought in sentences. It's really bad. I've been an anti-Stanley(Andy, not Charles) since Andy's influence is felt in my church because they are in the same community as my church.

not to worry. Remember the story Jesus told abotu the rich man and Lazarus? Remember he said the rich man's brothers have the prophets (the scriptures). what Andy did is first discount the scriptures. I used to attend NP and glad I left. I had times over the. years when I felt uncomfortable with their vision (a church where the unchurch want to attend, the rock music atmosphere, etc). I pray people will flee from this place, if they remain they like Andy are destined for hell. Christ will deny them since its obvious they are denying Christ even though he preaches in Jesus's name, based on the fruits from his tree, if he does not change Christ will deny him.

Pastor Andy, I'm so sorry that you from your testimony of what happened when you watched the atheist's presentation, allowed the atheist to convert you to his way of thinking rather than you converting him to God's way! That's so sad. God's Word IS the source of absolute truth. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. John 14:6, He told Nicodemus. He told Satan: Man shall not live by bread alone but by EVERY Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 Review Psalms 119 and note all the attributes given to the Word of God. And finally note how in John 1:1 Jesus is referred to as the Word. No subjectivity there. People must be saved on God's terms. So preach the whole truth and nothing but the truth for their sakes and yours.

@@barbarakuks2034….yes, that was my biggest objection with Charles Stanley….the Once Saved Always Saved doctrine. It is false and does not align to Scripture. The Word of God says we must “continue “ in our faith, growth and walk. Many do not continue but actually fall away. Even the Bible says there will be a “great falling away”. Charles Stanley always quoted the Scripture that no one including the Devil can snatch you from the Father’s hand. That is true, but God gave us human choice and will…..people choose to leave the Father’s hand and let go of following the Lord. God does not force use to stay with Him and follow him. God will never hold us hostage to following Him. OSAS is on every level a false teaching that will lead people into Hell thinking they have the security of Heaven when in reality they do not.

Andy Stanley reminds me of the Corinthian church. In the Corinthian church they seemed very proud of how accepting they were of the sinner in their midst. Paul had to write them a letter of correction telling them to disfellowship the sinner until they repented from their sin and stopped doing it. When the sinner stopped Paul then wrote a second letter and told them to welcome the repentant sinner back in. Paul did not rejoice in how open the church was to the sinner while he was still sinning it is not a reason to celebrate. The wages of sin is death. We are told to repent and turn from our sins.

Thank you ! This is it exactly. Paul even told the believers that they needed to repent & mourn, being in grief with the grieving of the Spirit of God, so that the sinsick person would be taken away & delivered unto Satan with hopes that as he was beat up by him, that he would repent, also. And for this brother, it worked. That mourning by the believers, was the goodness of God leading him to repentance. Then in repentance, like the woman caught in adultery, he could hear the powerful words of Jesus: Go & sin, no more.

What did Jesus said to the woman caught in the adultery? " Who condamn you?....Neither do I"...She WAS NOT ASKED TO REPENT FIRST FROM HER SIN ... Indeed, He mentioned at the END of the conversation. and of her hearing that shes not being judged by him either " : go and sin no more".... Sin in not good because it destroys you and your neighbor and that's needs to be " preached"- as Jesus did, not as church does. If "christians" would follow Christ, instead of a book or a religion, they will actually follow in Jesus' steps....and become a LIGHT in this world...the book was INSPIRED....but not even Jesus followed...instead of trowing stones AS THE BOOK INSTRUCTED, he told her " NEITHER I CONDEMN YOU"....He was supposed to condemn the woman with issue of blood....it was against THE BOOK for her to be in public!!! Did Jesus blindly obeyed THE BOOK, or applied what he preached? If the book wins instead of GODS LOVE, Satan wins.

The church I was a member of soon after I got saved ('95) was fairly scriptural, albeit Arminian. However by 1998, the Pastor and Elders went to Willow Creek to see what the new Church Growth Movement was all about. When they came back, EVERYTHING changed. All of us were put on the back burner and ignored. We were told we couldn't even say anything to the Pastor after service when shaking hands, that they were there for the unbelievers only! The Pastor and his wife were two of our best friends, but that went out the window. I was on the building commitee just as this started up, and we were looking for property near-by, and we were sent out door-to-door asking "what would it take for you to come to church?" ?'s such as No Steeple? .... Less talk of sin? ... more fun activities, such as a built-in pool? I couldn't believe what I was hearing! I felt very strongly about witnessing to the lost, since I had just come from being that myself 3 or so yrs earlier. But I also knew this was completely wrong. Willow Creek (Bill Hybels) / Saddleback (Rick Warren) and their Seeker-Friendly ways are not God-honoring if you ask me. The sheep are starving in those churches!🐑🐑🐑😥

A preacher is called to preach it is a gift not all have that. Those that came out of seminary and started mega churches seem to always fall yet become big & famous. They seem to avoid many things in GOD's Word that may cause controversy. I love how their study bibles refrain on comments concerning setting issues. Yet a small church mountain preacher down a dirt road that was called to preach will take on topics where the flock get stuck such as so called "bible contradictions". Rather than pass over the potters field & the field of blood, who bought the field the priests or Judas, were there 2 fields, Judas bought an estate, the priests later bought a field. God bless the man of GOD that is called to preach, the teacher that is called to teach. GOD judge the man who is not called yet taught by man & teaches the religion of the world and it's god. Andy seems more bothered by the fact that the gay partner was married and committing adultery than the fact that he was having a homosexual relationship. As if one sin was for some reason greater than the other and is therefore a disqualifier for serving in the church when both sinful lifestyles should be a disqualifier. Andy is more concerned about hurting people's feelings and stepping on some toes than he is about the standards that God has set forth for His creation. You cannot be a follower of Christ and live out an adulterous and homosexual lifestyle. We are commanded to deny ourselves and carry our own cross if we are to follow Christ.

Exactly. If we determine “what is sin” based on this approach, then its definition easily changes to whatever is comfortable in culture. If the mutual consent to a sin makes it OK (“so long as nobody is harmed”) then what is wrong is entirely determined by the individuals involved. This is so flawed because it assumes we are better able to determine what is wrong/bad/harmful for ourselves than God. Essentially, we become the authority on what is/isn’t sin.…. not God.

The thing is that Jesus called people to repentance. Yes, he sought out the lost, but he didn’t allow anyone to feel at peace with their sin. Zaccheus is a good example. His immediate response to what Jesus said to him was to repay all he had stolen. To the woman caught in adultery he said, “go in peace and sin no more. “ Andy’s underlying assumption is that sin is not a big deal and we shouldn’t cause offense by calling it out. Sin is why Jesus died on the cross.

@@TheGodWalk The problem is that y’all are humans that think it’s your job to go around calling out other humans’ sins. That is God’s job. A pastor’s job is to teach the Word, not to point fingers and call only specific sins out to ostracize people. Just a question…which sins would he call you out for? Just bc yours might not be as obvious as a homosexuals, doesn’t mean it isn’t real or less than theirs. “Let he without sin cast the first stone.” Remember that verse? This type of attitude is one of the main reasons that people turn from God. The Church. A bunch of self-righteous, sinful humans going around judging people. And I grew up in a church. Shouldn’t church be the best place for a sinner to go? The pastor should be welcoming enough to get them there, then let GOD do the condemning or working on their hearts. It’s not our job. Christians have become so insufferable that I don’t even wonder why people turn away from God anymore.

@@TheGodWalk Last thing and then I’m truly done with this topic bc honestly, it makes me so upset when Christians are this intolerable and unsympathetic to OTHER sinners, just like them. Andy absolutely declares that homosexuality is a sin, and that marriage is only between a man and a woman. So per your argument, he has called them out. Just like he’s called the rest of us out for our sins (including himself). Andy has always believed that Jesus’ main function on earth was to show God’s love, so that’s what he has modeled his church after. He believes the most spiritual growth is best done in small groups, or circles, not in “big church.” He teaches about Jesus’ life on earth, and tries to help us be better at life by showing love to others and treating others well, no matter their transgressions. You don’t have to agree with that purpose, but trying to take him down by making some chopped up documentary showing small portions of his messages, which almost always can be construed in the way you’ve portrayed, is completely counterproductive to furthering God’s kingdom. Go after the Satanists or other denominations that are REALLY misleading people…don’t go after someone that loves God and believes his sole purpose on earth is to show God’s love. One day, we’ll all have to answer to our Heavenly Father, so I really hope you’re right here, or you’ve turned many away from learning from someone that truly loves God and has nothing but the purest of intentions. My mom has worked for Andy for 25+ years and I can attest to his character. I feel terrible for him and the criticism he faces, but after hearing last weekend’s message, I believe stronger than ever that he’s got it right, and most other pastors have it all wrong.

So read your Bible first before going on a rant, because if the facts are put on the table you'll be embarrassed. Anyway sin ought to be spoken about in the context of us pursuing a Holy life as opposed to rebuke and rebuke is reserved for those who blatantly refuse to change knowingly what they are doing is wrong. Paul suggested disassociating with them actually. ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭5:9‭-‬13‬ ‭ESV‬‬ [9] I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people- [10] not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. Yes, love them because we all have family who have someone that is a homosexual and we love them, but we have to make a stand for what is right and homosexuality is clearly wrong.

May the Lord have mercy on Andy. When I see him preach and teach, I see no humility at all. I see pride and an arrogance. He is a pragmatist. Know idea what has happened to him in the last 20 years but clearly something got a hold of his heart. I fear for him. Any minister of the gospel that teaches us that we need to unhitch ourselves from the Old Testament is to be avoided. He has denied the faith.

I used to attend an Assembly of God in Lansing NY, and the straw that broke the camel's back for me was that for their morning adult sunday school, they just showed Andy Stanley videos and when they were over, the assistant pastor would stand up and say, "Well what did you think of that?" Meaning 'actually Wasn't that great?' but not meaning, 'Did you have any issues with that which you disagree with?' Because with most of these types of churches, what they want is Kool Aid drinkers, NOT people who dispute their message. But according to Paul in 2nd Corinthians 10: 5 "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." So when Andy Stanley said junk like "If you have sorrow (about your sins) you're not trusting God" and then he taught that it was sin not to trust God. So it became 'If you have sorrow over your sin, THAT is a sin.' So I quoted to them "Godly sorrow [over sin] produces repentance that leads to salvation." They weren't happy to have people dispute with their Andy Stanley videos. When I went to sunday school after that I began more and more to dispute with Andy Stanley. People were uncomfortable with me. BUT! A FEW people appreciated what I brought up. But they kept up Andy Stanley as a replacement for the gospel for their morning sunday school. So I left them.

One thing that stood out to me was Andy admitting he never necessarily felt called to ministry and that it was other people that told him he should do it. Similar with Mike Todd, actually. A big reason I haven’t gone into ministry is that I haven’t felt God calling me to it yet. I’ve been told I’m a good speaker and I’d like to think I have a fairly good grasp on scripture, but I’m not sure I’m being called to ministry. There’s a man at my church who’s been filling in as youth leader while we’re searching for a new youth pastor. Everyone keeps telling him he should apply for the position because they think Gods calling him to it. His response is always the same: “if that’s His will, He’s got my number.” And I worry how many pastors came into the role because other people convinced them to do it rather than God calling them.

In other words, they don't put their 2 cents in the scripture or they make it say what they want it to say. This is what Andy Stanley has done. Tell me where in the Bible does it say homosexuality is NOT a sin. God destroyed a whole city because of it. God made male and female. I have listened to Andy Stanley for years and loved his teaching. He had a way of making the Bible come alive, making you feel you were there at the time it was all happening. This is all so disturbing. I will never see Andy in the same way. The way he condemned adultery but said nothing of the act of homosexuality when the Bible is so clear on those issues! Even if homosexuality wasn’t an issue in the story about those couples, letting someone who was actively committing adultery jump into serving in a church the minute the divorce papers were signed is ludicrous! But then you add in the fact that the adultery was a homosexual act, well I’m just speechless. Letting someone attend your church that is engaged in ongoing sin is one thing. Putting them in service to your church is another. I believe that the Bible speaks so strongly about homosexuality because when left unchecked it leads to all kinds of debauchery. Look at the trans movement now which I believe has come out of the acceptance and affirmation of the gay lifestyle. They just keep pushing the bar further and further seeing how far into debauchery they can go. I know many in the gay community are not a part of this but nontheless, many are and they are going after the children, lying to them and telling them they can change their gender. It is frightening and It’s become an epidemic. These people need to be told that Jesus can change their lives and give them peace they can get no where else, not tell them Jesus is affirming whatever sin it is they continue to engage in! They are going to affirm these people right to hell!

As iron sharpens iron… I get it, but he needs our prayers. Andy’s goal right from the beginning was to serve the world, it was not necessarily a bad goal. He was trying so hard to meet the world where it was. To introduce the world to God in a non judgmental loving kind way. Growing up in the church he saw mean hateful “Christian’s”. His father was one of the most godly men I have ever seen, and we see here how he was treated by “important people” in the church Andy tripped up by not serving God first, it seems he went around God instead of through God. Right from the beginning he said he was never called by God. He was following in his fathers footsteps, (with a college ideology) trying to reach the unreachable. I believe his intentions were/ are humble, but he was too focused on the world. We are all being slowly indoctrinated by the enemy. In slow bite size pieces, through educational system, social media & TV, in many ways most of us have grown to accept the ways of the world. Now we have a world rejecting Gods Word, and falling into the enemy’s hands. It does not have to look evil for the enemy to win, it can even look like love & often does. All the enemy cares about is pulling people away from the Truth of Gods Word. We all need prayers.

“Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.” ‭‭I Samuel‬ ‭8‬:‭1‬-‭3‬

So sad - “if you go verse by verse through the Bible, you’ll never make it to Jesus.” Possibly the most telling statement I’ve heard so far. So different than what has become my experience - Christ fills the Old Testament. Jesus used the OT to reveal Himself on the road to Emeus. Only a church missing the depths of relationship with Christ is unable to see Christ communicated through the entire text. He is not a schizophrenic God. He is the same. His nature did not change. People are so in need to meet Jesus or be reintroduced to Him again. Oh, how He loves us!!!

Interesting comment. I started listening to this podcast because I was lead by God. In my observation of the church today it seems that most do not have a relationship with God the Father. They are worshipping an idol that was created by the Roman church. It is going to be devastating for many when the realize the fathers of the faith have sold the world a pack of lies. One cannot have a relationship with someone they do not know. There are definitely going to be so call Christians from this generation who will hear "depart from me I know you not"

Jesus is the Beginning and the End. Alpha and Omega. He is the Word and is God. God will not be mocked. It’s simple, some will repent others will not. They will mock, scoff, condemn, guard their sin, and follow satan straight to hell. Follow Jesus and have eternal salvation.

We visited his church around ten years ago. In his sermon, he said that one didn’t need to believe that the Old Testament was infallible in order to believe in Christ. My wife and I were stunned and as we looked around; there didn’t seem to be anyone shocked at his statement. We never went back.

There are several instances in the Bible of children of Godly men who didn’t follow in their father’s footsteps, such as Eli. Many people are abandoning the absolute biblical truths they were raised with. Conforming to culture modifies and waters down our biblical foundations. The goal of the gospel is for us to be conformed to the image of Christ and crucify our own desires. Stanley’s message is the same as the satanic creed - “Do as thou wilt” Or, as people started saying bk in the 70’s, “If it feels good, do it!” Pride goes before a fall.

1:31:38 “What would his ‘late’ father Charles Stanely think of his [Andy’s] position on homosexuality?” That answer does not matter at all - not now and certainly not in eternity. The relevant, eternally relevant and consequential question is “What does HOLY GOD command regarding homosexuality?” That answer is in the Word of GOD. It is HIS Command and nothing else matters.

Both men thought nothing of Anna’s pain, not even her son - Andy. When I learnt of Anna’s story, I lost all respect even for Dr Stanley! Excellent doc. My deeper instinct tells me Andy is a closet Gay (hence his easy acceptance of homosexuality). I had thought how embarrassed Charles must be of how Andy has turned out, yet hearing how in this video, Charles so affirm his son/son's ministry, it reminds me how "love is blind" 😢. I have to wonder what guilt Charles felt in how his son turned out. May God have Mercy on both their souls. 🙏

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. When you stop being more worried about what God thinks about a subject than what fellow humans think about that same subject then you’ve turned down the wrong path. Because you see, Christ will never love someone into the pits of hell. That’s why there is such thing as accountability & conviction. What we see unfolding here is lukewarm Christianity & that my friends is way worse than being black or white on a topic. Truth without love is zealotry, just like love without truth is a lie. All of this has been predicted, I pray that Andy gets back on track. 🙏🏻
