The History Of Steven Furtick

Steven Furtick is one of the most well-known pastors in American Christianity. Known for founding Elevation Church and Elevation Worship, as well as writing and recording some of the most popular worship songs of the day.
In this video essay, I aim to lay out an understandable timeline of how Steven Furtick began his ministry, when he planted elevation, and how different people in his life have influenced how he approaches ministry and scripture now.
This isn't a hit piece, which will disappoint some, but rather a video in which I present the facts I've discovered while researching Steven. My goal is to present that information and let the viewer decide. To assist in this endeavor I have provided a list of links to the full videos I used in this video.
Below you will find links to the full context of the clips used in this video.

I've been in ministry for 25+ years...and have seen growth and our church is fairly large...but to be fair, I get on my knees and thank the Lord for the servant pastors at the small country churches that I pass when I drive. Those individuals, faithfully serving a flock, feeding, nurturing, from the cradle to the grave...for none of the earthly glory. They are the real heroes of the faith.

I'm grieved for anyone who has been deceived into believing this is what Christianity is. This man is in it for his own glory. He doesn't shepherd a church, he owns a brand. Christianity isn't an experience or self-help, it's a person, Jesus Christ.

Here is my story…I have been going through a very difficult time in my life. One of those times that nothing goes right and hope seems lost. I was in my car crying out to God for help. I literally yelled “God I’m scared please help”. Later that night I was scrolling through KZread looking for something to listen to while I fell asleep. About the 3rd video was title was “God, I’m Scared”. I thought no way… it was a sermon by Steven. No matter what you think about Steven or his past, I know God put that in my path for a reason. Thank you God and thank you Steven for giving me the motivation to pick up my bible again. I truly believe that is what matters.

This was a very well researched video. I’ll admit, I loved his sermons in 2009-2012ish, however, they were always about about me and my feelings rather than Jesus. It “felt good” to listen to him. But my eyes were opened. He is charismatic and able to sound good yet it’s fluffy and doesn’t fill up someone spiritually. The church is still feeding on milk and should be eating meat.

I feel like a lot of these ministers’ empathy is also their stumbling block. Where in scripture does it say the Church is for unbelievers? By definition, the church is the Bride of Christ and while evangelism is a huge component in church-building, the purpose of evangelism is that unbelievers will come to the saving knowledge of Christ and be grafted into the spiritual family. God cares about the growth of his children so to push believers to the side for the sake of only reaching unbelievers is unbiblical. Discipleship is very important to God because he cares for his children’s edification.

@@HonestYouthPastorMany of the faithful who followed God and had to speak for Him were very direct in their judgments against men and nations. There is nothing wrong with being direct as Ephesians tells us to expose wickedness. Often times our hesitance to judge and expose is actually disobedience. Modern worldly culture deceives us to think we are bad if we share strong truth. We are to judge righteously and warn mankind. It’s always nice to present accurate information and avoid pushing subjective opinions. But truth is not subjective. When dealing with false teachers it is important to be bold in warning people. The truth of God and the salvation of mankind is at stake and we should never be afraid to call out false teachings that lead people to confusion and destruction. Thanks for the vid, Blessings 🙏

That clip between him and his son about to be baptized got me choked up. I remember my dad baptizing me, and I pray I get the honor to baptize my sons. That's the most sincere and "real" I've seen him while holding a bible in a while. You can tell he's conflicted. He needs to let the Holy Spirit convict and change him. We can call him out as a false teacher all day long (which he is, not denying that), but we also should pray for him, too. I also can't stand when people say things like "if it weren't for *insert name (Furtick for this example)* I wouldn't have found God and/or they brought me to Jesus." Nope. The Holy Spirit is the only person who brings people to the realization they need a Savior. The Holy Spirit can work THROUGH people, but we should never once say it was because of any man but Christ that we find salvation.

"He used to be very well dressed" I'm sorry what does that have to do with "taking a turn". A lot of people ( not saying SF ) feel obligated to dress a certain way to please church people and keep up an image. If I was unfamiliar with church or God I would feel welcome if the pastor dressed like a regular person and not in a 3 piece starched-up suit. I know people who left churches because of shallow things like clothes because they felt unwelcome or people made comments about their clothes. Well done. It confirms, yet again, that evangelists Should not be pastors. Those five fold ministries have distinct strengths and responsibilities, as well as weaknesses. An evangelist wants people saved, but sometimes misses the boat on discipleship. The conversation between Furtick and Matt Chandler is a good example of Firtick being unable to see the value of rigorous discipleship. This piece also reinforces my thoughts that too many young, charismatic men are being prematurely given platforms before they’ve had a chance for their root system to be established. I’m angrier at the older pastors who continue to trust these guys into the spotlight than I am at the young men. Let them learn what it means to be faithful, be taught by older saints, grow in humility and service, and patiently wait for the Lord to raise them up. Also, I’m tired of pastors getting rich off the writing of junk food books. Take a reasonable salary from your church and actually pastor the congregation. Write the books AFTER you’ve done that for a couple decades.

The phrase "evangelists should not be pastors" gives me pause. Yes there are different giftings, but wasn't Timothy told to "do the work of an evangelist" and aren't all evangelists suppose to disciple? We are Afterall told to "Go and make Disciples" not just converts. Maybe it would be better to say some folks in the office of pastor are better at evangelizing than the are discipling making and shouldn't be in the first chair, and some pastors who aren't as good as evangelists, need to do more evangelizing and the two should ideally be working together to make a more balanced church.

When your converts say the church saved my life it tells me who you worship and who your god is and that you don’t know the real Jesus. Please don’t take my word for it. Please be in the Word of God and seek after truth. Salvation is only found in Christ alone, through faith alone. No man should be elevated to celebrity status. As someone who was part of Elevation Matthews for eight years I can very sadly assure you that it is the case of a lot of the attendees that they are, as someone put it, "one atheist talking point away from shattering". I was a volunteer and a member of our short-lived choir. I got to know A LOT of people including new converts, a few of whom ended up crashing & burning when 2020 hit. I tried to disciple a handful of the women and at least two of them have since gone off the deep end. They were not interested in actually digging deep in The Word or being discipled once they realized the giving up the world and taking up their cross part of things. Others I knew and observed, including some staff, even "pastors" were extremely immature in the faith with little interest in changing that beyond the feel good crap PS Steven taught. I got to know Holly a bit and I do believe she & PS Steven love Jesus and want people to know Him. I still pray for their eyes to be fully opened to His Truth as it could help to bring a great revival to our state, maybe even our country and world. If they would just stop missing that mark. I should add that being a part of this church did get me to dig deeper into The Word myself. Though I am now part of a different church I am still an (unofficial) co-leader in my women's group where we dig deep and disciple one another in the Truths of Christ and His Word. We most certainly have our own responsibilities as Christ-followers to mature in our faith but EC does not tend to cultivate that culture in the day to day. Spiritual discernment and sin and sanctification are not words that are used. I was there when PS Larry Brey was there and I wanted SO MUCH for him to be authentic. His wife is and, I don't know that she would admit it, but I think she was adversely affected by things that she saw. I knew her fairly well and she believes the Truth. Sadly, Elevation Church very much reminds me of Pharisees and phalacteries. All show, little substance. It's actually quite heartbreaking in the long run. Pray that they would have ears to hear and eyes to see the Truth of God! Pray for God to REALLY use this church for His glory!

i went to his church when it first started. One campus on an elementary school property in charlotte. I thought at that time Steven seemed sound... but the whole church "vibe" was off. I watched and listened as it descended into the heresy that it is today... mostly from afar but was at one of the early code orange revivals or whatever he called it with all the visiting "pastors" and knew then and there it was on a bad path. I suspect the Lord has rescued many sinners from hell through but despite the ministry of Steven... and there in lies the eternal truth and good news.... That it is all about Him and He gets the glory and His eternal plans will come to fruition no matter the faithfulness or faithlessness of the people and ministries He uses.

I dont care about money~ I care about the message that touches my heart and soul. I cant think of many of Steven’s sermon’s that have not touched me in some way. Its all in the perspective of each individual person. If he leads me to Christ, teaches me the Bible and leaves my spirit and soul feeling fulfilled~ He is good enough for me. I will continue to follow and tithe to this ministry💜.

When I hear comments like someone downing a brother or judge not, I am convinced that one doesn't read the scriptures in CONTEXT! Scripture clearly reaches we are to judge what someone is preaching according to the Word. It says that in the last days there will be many false teachers deceiving people. Too many charismatic take a scripture here and there and make it fit a train of thought, What one should be doing is reading the chapter to get what the context of a passage is. And most often the sermons are about come get your blessing, give your seed offering so God will bless you etc. RATHER then we are sinners in need if a Saviour, we need to repent (turn from our sinful behaviour), and ask God for forgiveness of our sins. And that isn't repeating a little prayer with everyone else. The so called sinners prayer was something false preachers Charles Finney came up with. And who us the ones living a life of luxury. These preachers asking for your money. Steven's net worth us about 50 million. He works with other multi millionaire preachers like Todd White, Kenneth Copeland, TD Jakes, Joel Osteen etc. I remember seeing a clip of a message by Steven where he said God said I am that I am, but I tell you that I am. Blasphemy that is. Please read the Bible folks and compare what is being said in the Name of God. Read 1 Timothy, 2 Peter, Titus, to see qualifications if a Pastor and what the Bible says re false preachers. There are good study guides out there like versebyverse.org online, or the ESV study Bible and others.

If we focus on the principal itself we may miss God and his characteristics. If we focus on story alone we may mis God and his characteristics. Excellent research. I don’t base my faith or relationship with God on what a pastor on KZread does. I get encouragement from his messages and it simply points me to the Bible. Trust yet verify is a good perspective when it comes to faith and organized religion. I just watched that Matt Chandler sermon a couple days ago and *MAN*, it was downright prophetic. I can understand Furticks reasoning behind his approach with preaching, but it’s a much greater issue with church in the first world overall. We’ve pushed the responsibility of leading people to Christ to the pastor instead of being equipped to evangelize ourselves. People don’t get trained in how to study and understand scripture, so they never go any deeper than a surface level understanding of God. And yes, i understand how much good Elevation does for the community, I commend them greatly for it. But, the Bible makes it clear that works aren’t what saves us. My fear is that Elevation, and many churches like it, are simply giant spiritual daycares full of infants and toddlers in the faith who are one compelling atheist talking point away from shattering like glass.

Every person is free to have their thoughts, feelings and opinions so mine is this… Pastor Steven ask God daily to lead him and God does just that. He provides scripture at every turn of each and every sermon we are fed the word with his personal examples and I take away so much but I also go back and listen and read again as I ask the Holy Spirit to give me insight for where I am in my life and where I need to be. As God watches over His word to perform it in my life, I also pray for those Pastors that speak into my life so that wisdom and discernment will let me know if I need to walk away and Pastor Steven is not one that God has placed on my heart to walk away from but there are certain SM influencers that I no longer listen to. As a child of God, I am called to spend time with God for myself and learn of Him as we all are and pray for those we might have concern for but to not speak ill of any man or woman of God but pray for them.🤗♥️ (I also believe that babies should be in the provided nurseries not the sanctuary) As most parents trust the daycare & school daily, with their kids, they find it difficult to allow the child to be in a setting suitable for them on Sundays at church is beyond me. Lastly, yes Pastor Steven preaches from the word and believes in Father Son & Holy Spirit and that Jesus was born of a virgin and died on the cross for our sins.🙏🏽
