The best Soviet gas mask - ShMS

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I get asked a lot what the best Soviet gas mask/respirator is, and I will always answer ShMS.
The ShMS, also known by the East German designation SchMS stands for special helmet mask, where as normal ShM masks would stand for helmet mask.
The ShMS is designed for looking through optics, so the lenses are flat, sit very close to the eyes and look directly forward, this features provides both a very good field of view and makes the mask better than many newer masks in regards to looking through optics or using a rifles iron sights.
The mask came in both black and white variants, and a special version called the PRVU was designed for rocket crews.
In my opinion the ShMS is one of the creepiest gas masks, ever designed, it bears a resemblance to a skull, and along with the PBF and PMG masks, was one of the influences on the Combine soldiers and police from Half-Life 2.

    ШМС (ShMS in English transliteration) means "helmet-mask, special". But this code only applies to a mask itself, not to the whole system that includes filter box, bag and accessories. This problem comes from the fact that in Russian there are two different terms "противогаз" and "маска" ("шлем-маска"). The first term literally translates into "anti-gas (system)", the latter one - into "helmet-mask". While in English, these things are commonly translated into a "mask" with no distinction. By the way, the same ShMS has been used in several different systems. SchMS is just a German transliteration of the same Russian abbreviation ШМС because Germans write Ш as Sch. There is another common mistake. ПМГ (PMG) is a code of the whole filtering system, not a mask. ПМГ means "anti-gas (system), compact". It uses ШМГ (ShMG) helmet-mask with a filter port on its side. Same thing with a ПБФ (PBF), "anti-gas (system), box-less, filtering" (box-less stands for no external filter box) that uses ШМБ helmet-mask. I hope, this information will be helpful.

    You are welcome. Surely, I'm not suggesting you changing anything, it is purely for the sake of clarity. Even in the USSR/Russia, a lot of people were using these codes interchangeably. It was only important for logistics to know the exact designation.

    Yeah thanks for the info regardless, it reminds me a bit of how lots of people don't like the fact I use the term gas mask for respirators because gas mask is not really a proper name for them anymore, true but most people call them gas masks all over the world. You can even take that to a silly level where Americans use the term Protective Mask not respirator or gas mask. I just use the words interchangeably.

    This is a really excellent educational resource. It is fascinating to learn about little quirks regarding the masks. for example a long range prolonged battle situation in which a spotter and sniper would require long term active NBC protection whilst having good forward facing optics while scouting is sort of hard to imagine. But one upon a time it was not hard to imagine ! and the masks reflect that. a design detail so easily over looked and forgotten when masks now are no so often CQB or for limited use in defensive stance.

    *ШМС (Шлем маска специальная).* The *"Helmet-mask Special"* - this is the *abbreviation ShMS* comes from. Like someone said bellow it's only helmet-mask itself, wich is correct! The full set with hoses and filter usually called *"RSh-4" or "PRV-U".* (РШ-4 или ПРВ-У) *Gasmask Rsh-4* (Противогаз РШ-4.) That you call *ShMS* It was designed for officers, snipers and crews of vehicles (APC, Cars, Trucks, Tanks - etc). So when you said that it was designed for snipers this is correct, but only partially. Or it's me with my "finest english" i could missed a lot in your story with it! If i did, my bad. I didn't mean it. There is also more rare version of this mask *"ShMS-R"* (ШМС-Р). for rocket tankers. (im not sure if my translation is good, so i try to expalain it is intended for those who refuel rockets. It differs from the usual ShMS with a modified protection of the mouth membrane, which protects the membrane from direct hit of rocket fuel elements. It was used in the PRV-U set. (Gas Mask of the Rocket Forces, Advanced). In both masks, you can insert anti-fog films with a diameter of 44 MM, which usually come with a gas mask and are in a metal container with the letters "НП". As far as understand that *НП* in english means itself as non-fogging films. (Yeah, i know so very original)... And *thanks for a video!*

    Hey mate, I recently bought a model which looks exactly like yours. Its just black instead of white. I mounted the GP5 filter (built in 1978). I removed the upper silicone chip but I didnt remove the one at the bottom. I took it off quickly because I of course could not breathe. After seeing all these asbestos videos Im a little worried. Could I have inhaled some of it or is it unlikely because I didnt remove the silicone at the bottom of the filtre? Can I still use the mask itself? Can I just clean it with soap? Which filter do you recommend? I read 40mm NATO filters dont exactly fit? Great videos btw!

    Nice vid. I got a few questions. 1: How short do I need to cut my hair to use these masks? 2: I've heard one difference between black and white soviet masks Is that the black ones are more durable, however I agree that the white one looks creepier, so how durable would you say that mask is? (I would store it when I'm not using it, but I will most likely wear it more than I will need to, and no I don't plan to intentionally cause damage to it) 3: What website did you use to get that mask? I've looked around on Amazon and different versions of eBay but I can't find any unused ones in my size. (I'm assuming my size is a 3 since I'm sure that's what it is for the gp-5)

    nice video but I still have a few questions. 1. How is the FOV? it looks like you couldnt see much through the tiny glasses and the thick middle part and the space between eyes and lenses look not like it really gives you a good view. 2. Can you remove or replace the inhale valve or speaker part on the front? I bet it could be pretty annoying if you try to aim with a solid butt stock 3. Can you wear it with glasses underneath? Looks to me like there could be enough space for glasses under that, usually you would have to get special gas mask glasses to wear underneath

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    6 жыл бұрын

    1. As I said in the video, the FOV is good because the lenses sit close to the eyes, a small lenses close to the eyes is better than a bigger one further away. 2. You can't replace the voice diaphragm, other than removing it and ruining the mask, but you could in theory remove the intake/outtake, no point though, the mask was designed for snipers and is one of the best masks ever made for using with a rifle. 3. Probably not unless they are very small but tough frames, remember glasses break the seal of the mask.

  • @weirdounknown7323

    @weirdounknown7323

    1. Just wanted to make sure because just from seeing it looks not like the FOV is that good 2. well couldnt you screw it off and put a smaller version of it back on?`should be possible. Or maybe put a tube in between mask and voice diaphragm to lower it a bit(I have a Auer MSA 3S at home with that part being on the lower end behind the filter which I would prefer) 3. Hm, guess you either need inserts for goggles like used in airsoft, contact lenses or old fashioned gas mask glasses. I dont think it breaks the seal, the mask goes beyond the ears after all which the glasses frame does not

    The name difference in german (Sch instead of Sh) is because of the pronounciation of the sound "sh", because that's how it supposed to be pronounced (not 2 letters separately like "s-h" or "s-c-h"). Similar with the PPSh-41 SMG. It had to be different in some way because if it were "PPS" (in pronounciation), then it would be a different weapon, propably similar here with the role of the mask or just the original russian name of it. In russian, it is ШМС, where "Ш" is pronounced like "sh" (the C is the actual "s" sound).

    I'm in the UK so that's probably why they were cheaper on postage, but most were £20-30 total. Just searched ShMS or SCHMS mask.

    Two questions: One, can gas masks filter radioactive dust particles? Or any light kind of radiation such as Alpha Waves? I'm asking just because in Metro 2033 The gas masks filter leftover radiation on the surface that has clung to the air, and I was wondering if this was true.

    Masks filter fallout yes (alpha), but can't stop gamma rays, beta would depend on the thickness of the masks.

    Very nice and informative video! I know this video is a year old, but I have a question you might be able to answer. I originally intended to use a GP5 for Airsoft by switching the lenses for polycarbonate lenses. Would you happen to know whether you can switch out the lenses in this mask? Thanks in advance for your answer.

    It should be possible in theory, but I've never attempted it, you could definitely put polycarbonate in front of the regular lenses on it.
