Taking another look at the PMK and GP7 respirators

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Taking another look at the PMK and GP-7 respirators, the two Soviet gas masks produced near the end of the Cold War and into the new Russian Federation.
Both in my opinion are bad masks and far worse than the simpler preceding Soviet masks. Both use cheap rubber straps rather than a latex hood and are difficult to adjust.
The quality control on these masks can be bad as well due to the period they were made in.
Overall I would recommend a ShMS, PMG-2 or PBF over these masks.

I'd recommend getting a larger size. These run small, so a size 3 is effectively a Medium.

Speaking of those straps; the plastic buckles on my GP-7V still have the flash on them from when they were cut out of the moulds. So adjusting the straps is about as comfortable as trying to pull a lump of super glue through a razor blade.

Something that makes changing sizes easier for me is pulling on the loop that is made on the outer side of the buckles, until you make a nice big hole, which makes an easier time of pulling more slack until you've resized it enough, and then pulling on it depending on whether you want it tighter or looser. Kinda hard to describe.

Weird, I have a GP-7 from the third quarter of 1991 and it's really good quality, everything works as expected. I gotta say, one of the more comfortable masks in my collection. It's really uncomfortable to get on but once you have it on your face it's really comfortable. The fogging issue can be easily fixed with a anti-dim soap or a anti-dim wipe, small enough to have in your pocket or satchel.

the anti fog lenses that usually come with the masks are pretty good at preventing lense fog, i have the GP-7V M (militarized version of the GP7 itself, unlike the PMK which was specific to military only.). Also it was the same experience for me until i messed with the straps (which are a pain to loosen up or tighten). The mask became significantly more comfortable and way better sealed. Im american but im also partially russian and i still have the slavic head shape, so that might help. Also the drinking tube is in a rather uncomfortable place for the mask, you have to maneuver your mouth a lot to actually get your teeth in the cut outs.I suggest using the anti fog lenses and get a bigger size.

The PMK 2 from what I heard has some weird sort of filter blanking system, rather than using a straightforward system you have to prise something into a gap to either seal it or insert a GOST thread, a lot of people hated them for that feature.

Not too worried by the unorthodox filter attachment, I'm sure I could get used to it. From what some people have said on KZread comments and videos I've seen today, the post-2000 made MPK's should have better quality control than ones made towards the collapse of the USSR, no idea how true this all is, but it makes sense to me. The plastic parts may also be badly molded, supposedly the PMK 1's have better plastic parts, than later PMK 2's, and the rubber could also be cheap and finner in places than they should be. The drinking tube is supposed to be garbage and falls apart, one guy said he replaced his with and an Isreali drinking tube. I'll have to wait and see, but it will be good to have the kit for my small collection.

I like the look of them a lot and I have a GP-7v which is the same thing as yours just with a drinking tube, however due to the late Soviet Era quality that’s all it will ever be. Cool looking. But I also have two GP-5 masks one from ‘70 and one from ‘90. The one from 1990 is x10 more irritating to put on then both the other GP-5 and the GP-7v. So I’d say try and get early versions of Soviet stuff because they seem to be better quality. (Marginally)

Speaking of straps. Strange thing you said about the M65 though, I think you told me that M65Z is better with the straps, I've got to say that adjusting the M65Z straps was a really painful experience for me. Which makes sense because they are supposed to be difficult to adjust so you don't accidently loosen the mask up during a chemical attack. But for all I know, the M65Z is difficult with the straps as well.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

Is there an actual way to tell which ones which? Hmm would it be possible to provide you with some photos? Quick Edit: It's probably the Z one yes. It seems that the Z variant has less holes and slightly bigger on the voice diaphragm. gasmaskandrespirator.wikia.com/wiki/M65_(Germany)

There isn't really a voice diaphragm on the M65, that's just the exhale cover, so yeah if you think those straps are bad, they are worse on the regular M65 apparently.
