Reevaluating Cheek Filter Gas Masks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Reevaluating Cheek Filter Gas Masks, after chatting with Tom from 13 O'Clock Podcast about the US M17 respirator I thought I'd do a more neutral reevaluation of cheek filter masks in general, especially because the actual US M17 series is far higher in quality than some of the Communist copies of it.
In this video I take into account the quality of the rubbers used on the mask, the quality of the filters, the overall weight and bulk of the masks and the operational requirements of the mask.
I'm still not convinced Cheek Filter masks are a better option than 40mm masks but they are certainly better than I first thought.
The masks in the video are the US M17A2, XM28E4. Czechoslovakian M10 and M10M. Polish MP-4 and MP-4B. Bulgarian PDE-1. Soviet PBF. Chinese Type 65.

My grandfather said that he thought the m17 was very comfortable and liked it more than the m9 because he was left handed and got issued a right handed shooter’s mask

This video encouraged me to buy a pde-1 just to modify it extremely. It's got a 5 point skull cap, 3d printed 40mm adapters that i attached hoses too, though i would like to get my hands on some m10m rebreather tubes instead. I also bought a opch 90 chemical suit, but it has yet to arrive.

One thing I heard from someone who was a US army paratrooper in the 80s, was that the side mounted filter could get tangled up in equipment (parachute cords?). This is an older memory, so I'm not sure about the accuracy of it, but it does seem logical that interior check filter masks would lack that problem. The same would apply to riot control situations. The M50 seems like the best of both designs.

Yeah it's why the M50 style masks will probably become popular, one of the things lots of service men praised the M17 and PBF for was as you said, not catching on anything and being ambidextrous

Good video. I would say that the changing of the filters in the field wouldn't be a top priority. The twin filters must be good enough for the combatant to escape the toxic situation they are in. Sod the spare filter. I think the filters would provide enough time to do the job. Like you I have the Czech and polish masks and find them pretty good on the whole. Thanks for sharing.

I made a couple of fake GP-5 filters by taking them apart and glueing or taping the bottom back on. It’s still the steel or metal filter but is empty and doesn’t have asbestos.

That M50 looks like a toy compared to the M17 gas mask. Put then side by side again and look at them. Durability. I bet the M17 outlives any of those mask. Its good old fashioned American enginuity. Its quality. And I agree. The Polish MP4 is nice. You can interchange M17 filters on to MP4. Only wish they made the MP4 in black color. Ill take the M17 gas mask any day. Its proven. MP4 good too and very affordable
