US M17A2 Gas Mask Review and Test

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Review and test of the American M17A2 protective mask.
The M17 series of respirators were cheek filter gas masks used by the US army from the late 1950s until the 1990s when they were eventually replaced by the M40 and MCU-2P.
The M17 uses cheek filters which makes it fairly unique, cheek filters are ultimately a bad idea because they are impossible to change without removing the mask and difficult to swap even then due to stretching the rubber to insert them into the mask.
There were three variants of the M17, the original mask, the M17A1 and then the M17A2, both the A1 and A2 had a drinking tube system.
A lightweight silicone prototype XM-27 mask was made to replace the M17 but did not go into service, the even lighter XM-28E4 "Grasshopper" was chosen as a new design later on but also was not made in substantial numbers.
Many nations made clones of the M17 to varying degrees of quality. The M17 is an interesting mask but ultimately a very flawed design.

I carried the m17 and the m17 A1 throughout my career when I went in the Army at 6:30 holding the filter if you look on the filter casing it'll be banded I believe it's an orange band, represents is the training filter use for CS gas only, I forget what NATO filters were color coded banded, but if NBC Warfare was deployed, if you do not have the right filters in it you were toast. From the time somebody called (gas) or banging on metal to metal, your allowed time to mask was 6 sec,? Undo snap case, withdraw the masks, spread your fingers on head straps, secure mask on head, clear the mask, or you were a no-go! I believe 3 seconds was allowed to secure the Hood. You would practice this! and practices this! until you become very proficient ...it was a pain in the ass, when you going through Decom station, the m17 was completely broken down and it was thoroughly washed and rinsed 55 gallon trash cans in almost boiling water, another pain in the ass to air-dry and reassemble. Qualifying with your M16 was another story, but another pain in the ass. Active 1975 to 1984.

Thanks for the great comment, I've been talking with several US veterans on here now regarding the M17 and M40s and my opinion over the years has certainly improved on the M17 as it seems it was fairly good at the roles the US wanted it for at the time. The nice thing is how the Avon M50 which is in current US service has a similar profile to the M17 but with removable exterior filters.

@@Weaponsandstuff93 yet another interesting fact about the M17A1 they were definitely a pain ....during NBC nuclear biological chemical environment... station on the Soviet border for 36 months 75 to 78 we prepared for the real event, The Soviets took it one step further they literally deployed biological chemical warfare during their training exercises.. it was not uncommon too watch on DOD classified films. dead Soviet soldiers on there FTX. A U S Company Commander during the Cold War was authorized to have a soldier of the lowest rank Echelon to remove his gas mask and take three minutes deep breaths, then re mask, for all clear was called out. @@daleslover2771 This is still protocol in US Tank platoons. The 3 tanks loader(The 3 tank was by doctrine the least experienced of the platoon) could be ordered to remove his mask and exit the tank and take deep breathes to test the air. However this would be the last case scenario. The tanks would have NBC detecting tape on the sides that the TC would see, hopefully the NBC system works to. US Army 19K 17-20’

May have been pointed out below already, but the A1 and A2 look pretty much identical on the outside (apart from the manufacture dates, A1s are all early 70s), but the A1 will have the resuscitation tube right next to the drinking tube inside, you won't miss it if it's in there. There's also internal differences in the exhale valve because of that system, gotta really dig to find that though. The A1 resuscitation system also had a long external hose that would clip in around the exhale valve and run to your "patient" on the other end, but I've yet to see one included with any of the A1's I've seen for sale online. Numerich Gun Parts Corp does have the tubes for sale on their website for about $12 though, just ordered one myself to go with my A1, along with a winterization kit.
