The Truth about Surplus Gas Masks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The truth about army surplus gas masks/respirators.
There is a massive about of misinformation online about army surplus gas masks and respirators. Regarding how long they last, what type of filter you should get, how long filters last etc.
This video aims to explain the entire process of choosing a type of mask.
Once you have a gas mask, conduct a fit test by using Isoamyl Acetate/Banana oil or another strong smelling substance to check the seals. Once you know the mask works and hack a stockpile of sealed in-date filters, the mask will be perfectly reliable.

    I used the test on a vas’s mask I made from a 2 liter plastic bottle, and a rudimentary filter made with ground up charcoal and heavy duty paper towels. It worked against arisol deodorant for exactly 1 minute before I began to very faintly smell it. Basically, don’t use the masks they tell you how to make in KZread tutorials.

    Been enjoying your videos for the past few months. Always very well thought out. Have you thought about creating a gas mask wiki type website with all different models and accessories etc. and a filter identification chart and known information on their safety seeing as though you get so many questions regarding this. Obviously there would be problems with people putting in anecdotal information so the filter safety chart would probably have to be yourself or approved people adding to it whereas the gas mask part anyone could add information too. Merry christmas dude, thanks for all the content :)

    A while back I picked up two surplus gas masks just in case I ever need something like that. I just so happened to get the two worst types, apparently. On the filters expiring we use the multi acid gas filters and we had several that had expired but we were using them up. They did fine until about a year and a half after they expired, after that they were garbage. Once we have them open they can be on the masks for up to six months unused before they start losing effectiveness.

    The Mylar wrapping got flakey right when they expired so as we moved them around the seals broke. In our shop they were absorbing chemicals, cigarette smoke, etc once that seal was broken so once we put them in a hostile environment they went bad within a couple hours. We use 25% hydrogen peroxide to kill mold and it is frequently aerosolized so we are hard on filters.

    The MC1 will 100% take a modern NATO 40mm filter. I have it in my hand as I'm writing this and have threaded the NATO NBC filter onto the Polish MC1 mask. It's for an Israeli mask and labeled NATO STANDARD SIZE GB2890-2021 LDG3 P3. I've tried to breathe through it and it is completely sealed. Works properly. So for reference, the Polish MC1 will take NATO & GOST filters.

    It's a standard surplus British Woolly Pully also known as Commando jumpers, Army ones are green, RAF is blue and Royal Navy are a darker blue as far as I'm aware. A lot of other armed forces have very similar ones, some police forces have black ones, and some fashion companies make civilian equivalents that look the same but cost about 10 times as much.

  • @AshleyBlackwater

    @AshleyBlackwater

    I've found 60mm is easier to screw on than the smaller 40mm but as the guy above said since the intake is the same it allows them to design more compact masks. Take a look at the US M9 mask and its copys. The filter port takes up the entire side of the mask, any bigger and it would be entering the eye holes.

    In many of your vids, you talk about going to the hardware store and buying 40mm filters. Is this a U.K./ British thing? Do all hardware stores over there stock gas mask filters? Here in the U.S. we have Home Depot and Lowe's. Neither carry gas mask filters , just 3m filters for sanding and spray painting which are not 40mm.

    Truth about military surplus is that there are lots of better stuffs out there on civilian world. Military surplus simply means that it met the specs that military have asked the others, while maintaining cheapest price than other competitors, not to forget about the fact that by the time these surplus comes out for sale to civilian world, it’ll be outdated. There can be more expensive but way better stuffs out there on civilian world than the military surplus.

    It's bad advice saying the filter is the most important! The mask is the most important hands down! You could have the best filter but if you're wearing a Chinese mask, which most will not properly seal or their seal will decay over time, the filter will do you no good. We're as the other way around you could at least have a semi functional respirator with a crappy filter and a good mask. Masks are always the most important! Plenty of cheap filters on Amazon that are functional with some being top of the line. However there are plenty of masks on Amazon that do not provide a proper seal!!!
