How long do gas masks really last?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How long do gas mask/respirators really last? Do they expire as soon as their shelf life is over? Or do they last forever?
In this video I aim to truthfully answer this question that has plagued Preppers for years.
I also stress the importance of filters in this video, which lots of Preppers seem to forget about.

    One thing to be aware of is that natural rubber does have a finite lifespan. It is not the same as plastic that takes forever to break down. Rubbers have volatile components that dry out over time. This is why you'll have seen rubber that has began to crack and crumble. There are likely special products on the market to help preserve old rubber things, which antique collectors should be aware of.

    The only note on the surplus masks having expired filters, make sure you can readily get new filters. shouldn't be a problem for most masks as they have standardized filters, but some have filters that are hard to get, like the Avon M50 or some older models made before the current standard or masks with filters made in countries that might be embargoed should the world hit the fan.

    Because gloves get damaged and oil soaked and otherwise fucked up during use. Troops don't just sit around and cosplay anime and movie characters, they have to work and fight. Doffing the top of a chem suit or doffing a coverall chem suit to change gloves in the middle of your work day in a contaminated area would be dangerously negligent. OTOH troops can swap gloves (and spot decon their briefly exposed skin if needed) and continue the mission. Glove fit is of course an issue because fixing aircraft (my career) requires tactile feel thick gloves for other missions do not provide.

    GP-4u. Soviet-made, 1974. Factory-sealed filters, their rubber caps were never ever opened. Rubber just sealed to the filter cases. They worked fine in 1996 - we painted car inside out using them. No acetone/paint solvent aromas passed through. Just slightly more than 20 years. You are absolutely right, sir! Edit: caps were factory attached to the filters with a slight solvent to adhere to the case. That's the point. I wonder who's downvoted this video?..

    I have the exact same chinese TF1 filter (came free with a mask I was going to use in a paint booth). The filter has a 3 year shelf life and the October 2017 date stamped on the side is the date of manufacture. The filter itself hasn't expired. It's just a garbage filter. I have ordered replacements for mine.

    Thanks for making, yet another, brilliant video! Where I work, we sell a variety of rubber composites and artificial rubber, in different formats. Regular black rubber (added carbon is usually what makes it black) wouldn't last nearly as long as black nitrile, for example, in a hot environment. Going by that knowledge, it seems evident that the materials any mask is made from will obviously affect its shelf life. Also, the conditions a mask is kept in, such as temperature and sun exposure, will also have an impact on their durability. I presume mask manufacturers don't tell everyone what their masks are made from, other than the generic use of the term "rubber".

    @@Weaponsandstuff93 That's what I figured. They wouldn't want other companies copying their products. Unfortunately, that slightly impedes people's ability to make informed decisions. Although, I also realise most people don't even realise there is more than one product that gets called "rubber".

    I have a question not related to the video but I was wondering what’s the difference between RD40 and 40 mm NATO threads or are they the same thing. • @Weaponsandstuff93

    RD40 as in the industrial filters? As far as I'm aware they are the exact same thing as 40mm NATO, 40mm NATO came first and lots of the same companies making masks and filters designed civilian or industrial masks with a 40mm thread, they called it RD40 I guess because it might sound weird to civilians looking for a work respirator that says 40mm NATO STANAG. I have a P3 filter that's technically RD40 that I use when dealing with fibreglass insulation, connectors absolutely fine to my NATO masks.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    Yes over time "clean" air will still break down a filter, there is always dust in the air that will slowly clog a particle filter as well as various vapours in the air that will slowly get adsorbed by the charcoal.
