Daniel and Deborah thank you both for setting the record straight. I wasn't aware of the lung cancer. So sad he's gone. The man tried so hard to stay grounded. Immense loyalty and love for his brothers, and the band as well. A true rocker and that voice was a window to his heart.

Right on Randy, especially since he was the de facto leader. He was the one keeping it all together while everyone else was fucking up. It was an isolated incident, and as you can surmise, it never happened again.

It wasn't just one isolated incident, but your point is well taken and he definitely deserved to be forgiven. It was actually a series of incidents over about a two year period from 1976 to 1978, leading to when he hit bottom in Australia. Carl turned it all around very quickly, though, and ended up having just two bad years out of a stellar 36 year career.

Of all the members ! ------------------In '78, The Boys were at an all-time low, both on /off stage. So much bad was happening, it is amazing they survived that year. I saw them at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo., & that '78 performance was far & away, to that time, the poorest I had ever seen or heard. The energy was just not there. A year later it wasn't much better. However, by 1980, I saw them 3 rimes, & they were far better, with Bruce back in the fold , & DW back on drums.------------but yes, '78 was a personal low for Carl, with his marriage to Annie having fallen apart. ----------------It was a tough year for all of us. ------------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o

He was probably trying to get a good buzz, to experience joy and euphoria. Always being on the road can get depressing and stimulants are used to temporarily freem oneself from the monotony. Try being tied to a contract where you have to be depended on, you can't back out, you have to play this concert on a predetermined date, you have to do well on stage, there are sound checks and all kinds of things to be done before you hit the stage, it's not a job just anyone can handle, it is pressure, some take drugs to free themselves from ongoing tensions ...

I am reading the book 'The Endless Wave' by Rocky Pamplin. Some say that he is not trustworthy, but I wanted to give context of why the tensions were so high on this tour. In 1977, they had booked a huge world tour in massive stadiums. These were booked by manager Steve Love, Mike's brother. But they fired Steve and the whole tour got canceled. They lost a ton of money. They rehired Steve, and a lot of damage had been done. Instead of a huge world tour, they were doing small venues and colleges. He was then able to book this Australian tour. But on the condition that all the Beach Boys were there. So from a business perspective, there was a lot of pressure for this to work out. Their reputation was already on thin ice as far as dependability. So when it was known by Stan Love and Rocky (Brian's body gaurds to keep drugs away), that heroin was purchased by Dennis and given to Brian, they flipped. Dennis was funded by Carl. In a meeting, Carl was calling Rocky names, in which he flipped and punched Carl. Rocky claims he is proud of this. But this is when Al Jardine took the side of Dennis and Carl instead of Mike and wanted Rocky to be sent home. But manager Steve Love said no.

A minor difference in accounts here. In Mike Love's autobiography and in Steven Gaines' book it is stated that Carl not only funded the heroin purchase, but that Carl himself purchased it, at the behest of Dennis and the Frost employee from whom it was purchased. To my knowledge, Carl never said that he purchased heroin for Dennis in Australia. According the account in the Gaines book, however, he did admit that he was drunk at the time and that he may have bought the heroin and then didn't remember buying it.

Steve Love was also behind Blondie Chaplin leaving which really deflated the comeback they were riding. Rumours persist that Carl also took heroin during this brief period of his life which coincided with divorce from his first wife. Life on the road is tough, and even tougher on the back end of your career.

That is what I think is so sadly ironic about the Wilson brothers. People tend to discuss ad nauseum all the illegal drugs the three brothers did, but Dennis and Carl were killed by two LEGAL DRUGS. Dennis died due to an alcohol-related drowning accident, and Carl died from lung and brain cancer as a result of smoking. He started smoking at the age of 13, and while he quit for several years, it still got him.

Carl was an alcoholic and he did partake in drugs (including heroin) not nearly at the level of Brian or Dennis, but he was an addict, make no mistake.. He kicked his drug and drink habits almost completely but he did have two acknowledged relapses (after Dennis' death and after his cancer diagnosis). Nothing but love for Carl. It's hard to beat an addiction and he did for the most part.

The years from 1976 through 1978 were particularly rough for Carl, with an admitted addiction to cocaine and a rumored heroin addiction as well. Add alcohol and tobacco to that mix and you have the toxic stew he was consuming at the time. I find it ironic that all those journalists were concerned about the possibility that he performed while high, but they paid no attention to the cigarette he was smoking, and that was the thing that would eventually kill him.

Several of those in the know about Carl at the time have said that saying it was two drinks and a valium was a dodge. He felt he should apologize, which was to his credit, but he could not tell the press the real reason for his intoxicated state onstage the previous night: Heroin.

Now for the truth. Carl is definitely fumbling around for words and excuses because he couldn't tell the press what really happened. The story as I've read, researched and deciphered it for many years. This short tour of Australia would be looked back on with disdain as the 'Heroin Tour'. This would be around the time when the band was fractured into 2 or 3 'camps'. The 'camps' we're not speaking to one another and they would enter and leave a show from different sides of the stage. It shouldn't be to hard for a fan to figure out who was in each camp. But Carl was always torn between his love and loyalty for his brothers and his loyalty to 'the band'. So Carl often ended up as a go-between/peacemaker. This is also the period when Dr. Landy had been kicked out of Brian's life. At this time Dennis was getting into heavy drugs. Dennis had taken Brian under his wing as a drug buddy. The rumor is Dennis scored some heroin as soon as they landed in Australia. He shared it with Brian. Carl was drinking heavily with the pressure of keeping his beloved brothers Brian and Dennis alive... And trying to hold the band together. So Carl ended up getting high on heroin with his brothers that night. Which is why you can hear Carl, Dennis and Brian all out of their minds on stage that night. The last part of the story is they had to get Dennis on a plane immediately after the show and get him out of there because they had heard the Australian authorities had been tipped off and were coming to arrest him.

Yep. Quote from Stan's brother Steve: "Yes, Rocky did indeed knock Carl to the floor in Melbourne, Australia in March I978, my last tour with the band. Rocky has written a book titled WIPEOUT in which he devotes an entire chapter to what we participants in that meeting in Mike Love’s suite with David Frost and others refer to as “the heroin incident.” Carl was drunk and surly and made the mistake of saying “Fuck you, Rocky” in front of a roomful of men. Rocky wasn’t going to take that and leapt to his feet, bounded across the room and socked Carl hard in the jaw."

wrong wife, the punching/putting his arm through a glass door or window depending on what you read, happened when he was with Barbara Wilson. The clip I've seen from the second tv movie The Beach Boys: An American Family got the timeline totally wrong & made it look like Dennis punched a window in the studio anger, after Mike Love tried to stage an intervention to convince him Manson was bad news.

Actually, the stories that have come out since that time say that it was just Carl who purchased the heroin, but that the purchase was at least initially on Dennis's behalf. Astoundingly, apparently when they first arrived on Australian shores in Melbourne Dennis solicited the services of someone who was in the employ of tour sponsor David Frost to obtain the heroin. That person did so, but then he refused to sell it to Dennis, and requested that it be purchased by someone more responsible. Also, Dennis didn't have the cash, so he asked Carl to pay for it and make the transaction. Carl did the transaction in the bar of the hotel where they were staying (pretty ballsy), purchasing $100 of the stuff, which apparently yielded A LOT of heroin in Australia in 1978. Apparently Carl kept some of it and gave some to Dennis, and some found its way to Brian as well.
