I love the response he gave when his father was mentioned, speaking positively and highly of an extremely imperfect and unpleasant yet important part of his career. If it would’ve been Brian or especially Dennis they probably would’ve taken it a different direction (that would’ve gotten uncomfortable real quick.) but Carl (who I’m pretty sure was beaten the least.) took it very professionally and only said the positives. We need more Carl Wilsons people.

Carl had the voice of an angel. Still sad to this day about his passing. One time in about 1983 or 1984 I had tickets to see The Beach Boys at The Garden Stat Arts Center. Well, show time came, and Carl walked out on stage with an acoustic guitar, and told the crowd that the rest of the band was stuck in an airplane circling over New Jersey. He went on to do an entire concert, solo - and no one regretted it - it was awesome!

That's a fun bit -- the C.H.P. & Brian Wilson! Brian just had the vibe about good 'ol coastal California! As a CA native -- I'm damn proud of him & his band. They made some terrific memories! Maybe it was the sun, sand, women, the gift of youth .......... or the relentless need to make cool music amidst the joys of life by the Pacific Ocean. God only knows indeed! Peace & Love, Cav = Univ. of San Diego, CA Class of 1980 & member of their Surf Club. *

@MrNotyag Brian took Four Freshman chord structure, Chuck Berry Rock n Roll, and Dennis Wilsons love of surfing. Jan and Dean were pretty much simultanius. Brian even wrote "Surf City" for them for their first #1 hit. Surfin USA was essentially stolen from "Sweet Little Sixteen" by CHuck Berry, who, after a lawsuit, has songwriting credit.

Carl was in the process of getting healthy during this time. He was going through a divorce and experiencing a lot of debilitating back pain, both which caused him to gain a lot of weight and self-medicate. He quit the "hard drugs" (his wording, and rumored to be heroin) and lost a lot of weight in short order. If you look at him in photos from less than two years later, in 1980, the difference in his physical appearance is astounding. He looks so much better. In some ways, Carl and Dennis were experiencing the same sort of struggles as Brian during that time. I hate to be so cynical, but in some ways I think that because Brian was the group's cash cow, it was all hands on deck to save Brian, but Carl and Dennis were left to fend for themselves. Dennis was too far gone to save himself, and too hyperactive and addicted to spend any length of time in rehab. Carl enlisted the help of some good friends for his own rehabilitation, and fortuntately it worked.
