Notice how Mike Love always positions himself next to Brian Wilson, because he knows the cameras will focus in on Brian and therefore he will get as much publicity as Brian. No matter where Brian stands in a crowd Mike always tries to stand next to him

Well, Mike may be a jerk, that's true. But you have to remember he always stood next to Brian on stage in concert because they were the two lead singers. Also you have to remember that it was Mike who wrote the lyrics to all those number one songs with Brian. Mike may not be our favorite Beach Boy but he certainly has earned the right to stand next to Brian.

@@doraholden848 I am of the opinion Mike's lyrical contributions were limited at best. WIBN would have not been any less a hit without Mike's "Goodnight my baby, Sleep tight my baby. " Despite Mike's insistence, he did not write IGA all by his lonesome. Brian, Steve Desper, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron have all stated unequivocally Brian wrote Darlin' by himself. According to everyone BUT Mike, CALIFORNIA GIRLS was written by Brian in his apartment after watching a full day of westerns on TV getting stoned on grass with Bob Norberg. The BB were touring Japan at the time. MOST of the lyrics to GV was written by Brian, with Mike composing the first two lines. Maybe he edited a word here or there, but that is NOT co writing. No, the fact is Mike admitted in concert several times, from 1964 to 1983 that Brian wrote all the songs.

@@whiteandright1958 The credits of the songs disagree with you. It's always hilarious to see people try to discredit Mike. He has as big of an ego as the rest of them, but his contributions were essential and integral to the success of the band. Hell, his voice alone is what makes so many of their songs iconic. That's undeniable. Also, they're on stage together to receive an award. Do you expect Mike to stand away from the rest of the band? You people grasp at anything.

@@doraholden848 don't believe everything you hear... especially from Mike Love. He sued Brian for songwriting credits on 74 song, but negotiated for 34. Who does that? Mike claims he wrote "Darlin," but Danny Hutton, Chuck Negon, Chuck Britz and Brian all dispute that. Brian says that he wrote "California Girls" while he and Bob Norberg were getting high and watching westerns on TV. The BB were in Japan at the time, but somehow Mike came up with the lyrics when he was not even there. Mike once claimed he came up with the hook for "I get Around." Then he changed his story to that he wrote ALL the lyrics. Now he claims he wrote the words AND the music and that the song was HIS idea. In 2022 Mike is now claiming he wrote " Fun, Fun,Fun" and that HE asked Carl to come up with some type of Chuck Berry intro. He also claimed, " and WE put the high part at the end which made the song." Not one mention of Brian. It's telling that Mike has claimed he told Paul McCartney he should write a "California Girls" type song and said he gave McCartney some lines to use. McCartney has started it us a lie and Love has NOTHING to do with the song. But to this day, Mike insists he co wrote "Back in the USSR"

I moved to California from Michigan in 1976. Farm girl to major city. My Aunt told my sister and I that there was 2 young men sleeping in our cousins room. They guest came back from band tour Earope. Told us to be quiet. Then she had us act like turtles and grab all dirty clothes. Replace with clean. We were relaxing at pool. 2 young men came out 3-4pm. Found out we couldn't swim. Asked us if we knew them, band? We said no. Brian Wilson taught me how to swim just like his daughter Carnie. Karl taught my sister how to swim. When FBook on computer showed up I became friends with her.

I would state each and every member has value and forms the group bringing their own personalities into the mix... It's just a simple fact and very easy to see...Mike Love was very much in love with Mike Love! not hard to figure that one out! I quoted Brians observation and opinion... If everybody is against Mike how come his shows with Bruce are such a succes? Saw God in Amsterdam like 6 years ago or so. Recently i went to ML and BJ. And I must admit what a party!!! I really enjoyed it. Yes he may by far be the least popular , yes even the hated one but other stars do like him. Why not. As even it is so hard to be and stay yourself, it can not have been much different for him. And look he is still alive and still performing. Others...died. When starting Mike was slightly older and when you were like 16 or 17 in those days and had an older brother, sister or cousin, nephem, he or she would have probably been married already, having a job, family and kids. At age 20 or 21 you were not a kid anymore. That has changed a lot over the years but explains to me why the gap between the Wilson's and Mike Love became so ugly. Seems to me that Bruce doesn't hate him. And Al J. isn't he neutral although he knows Mike is a musical nitwit comparing to him and the others. I ask you all never to forget what Mike was and still is for a lot of fans, including...me. Maybe you should all wear a tinfoil hat.

Just remember that this show was 5 days after the fiasco at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame induction ceremony . It looks like certain members of the band were still upset at idiotic Mike

I believe this was filmed shortly after the 1988 Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, during which, while uttering the Beach Boys acceptance speech, Mike made some famously unpopular criticisms of other members, and he himself received much criticism, hatred, and vitriol for....hence the wearing of the hard hat. PS Can anyone identify who was screeching "inside outside USA" during the song? Typical cornball Dick Clark production that immediately ends up being unintentionally dated and embarrassing....but give him credit for recognizing them as deserving of accolades at a somewhat unpopular point in their careers, early in 1988. Six months later in July they would make a huge comeback (mostly sans Brian) with the #1 smash hit "Kokomo"
