I have a Chihuahua that is 16yrs old that had a cancer tumor. The vet cried when we paid 2,000.00 to have it removed . He said that most owners would have had the pet put too sleep . If it were a child we wouldn't have given up on it.

I had a chihuahua who lived to be 21. She had multiple congenital malformations due to being a puppy mill dog. Sge was rescued from the shelter the day she was scheduled to be put down. When I moved to Israel, my friends all thought I was crazy for bringing her with me. It cost a lot of money and a ton of paperwork to get her approved to come into the new country, but how could I leave her behind? I was appalled that anyone would even suggest it.

I do the same thing. I have a 14 year old Jack Russell mix that has Leukemia. He is taking human medication because it isn't made for animals because it is expensive. I told my vet I will sell my car if it will keep him healthy and happy even 6 months longer. I can't stand to think of life without him. I hope he tolerates it well. I won't make him worse but I am praying it puts him in remission. ❤️🙏❤️

When I was newly married, my 17 year old poodle passed away. I got him when i was 10. That was 52 years ago and i think about him every day. I'm so thankful there are people like you who value those senior lives and it gives me hope. Thank you and God bless you, your staff and volunteers and mostly those dogs whose lives you have touched.

This is an wonderful documentary. Dogs are so intelligent, loving, loyal and kind and we use them in so many ways: to guide the blind, assist the disabled, smell out cancers, drugs and other contraband, in the police and military. And yet each day I'm utterly ashamed of the human race and their capacity for cruelty. Thank you so much for taking care of these golden oldies xx

When you decided to adopted a dog it's a contract for a lifetime - whether you or your dog first gone and rest forever. I personally always introduce my dog to my family, my sibling and some cousins even to my closest friends and neighbors who're also love dog. This is intentional and makes my dog used to these people - so if something happened to me, my dog will have a home and warm meal until their last breath.

Dear faith I hear what you say. Old dogs are hard to home because people want puppies . I am an old aged pensioner now and can see with newly opened eyes how important it is for old dogs and cats to find loving homes. I had a job which I loved and was great at. In my own way I helped people as much as I could in my environment and sometimes now that I have so much time on my hands especially during covid I feel unwanted. But you’re not never think that you are unwanted. I hope you have many years with your four legged friends. You are providing such a valuable loving home and they need and want you every single day. Bless you.

Puppies are fun and cute and all that, but there's nothing like the love of a older dog, especially a rescue. They have such a pure spirit, it's really unique. When I hear that someone is going to a shelter to find a puppy, I always try to convince them to look at the older dogs, especially if I think their lifestyle is not a good fit for a puppy.

Her "mom" and I lived waaay out in the country in two log cabins with all kinds of critters...really old chickens, her free range donkey named Dinkey, her Rhodie that would chase my cats (they are lion hunters) around..( the cats got used to her and would tease her as long as they could run into the cat flap. .It was really fun and funny living there. One of my cats learned how to bark when a strange car would pull in...it was pretty crazy there. All the animals started acting like the others. We named it the Banana Farm....I really miss those days...glad I had them. Rhodies rule! Take care!

A few months ago I lost my oldest dog (Roxie), she was a yellow lab 18yrs old, I had her since she was 8wks & we had such a tight bond, I felt so bad when it came time to say goodbye because covid wouldn’t allow me to be with her in her final moments & that absolutely broke my heart because I can only imagine how scared, nervous & confused she was. Seeing all these senior dogs is really making me emotional. Me & her brother (Zeek, my 8yr old Rott Shepherd Mix) miss her very much. A bright note to her passing is I feel she saw how miserable I was without her so she sent me an angle because a few weeks after she passed a little feral (yet friendly) kitten started showing up on my property, we became friends in no time & now he follows me absolutely everywhere, he got his name accidentally, I was calling him a pretty boy & before I knew it that’s all he would answer to so now his name is Pretty Boy or PB for short. It’s been 9months since he left his life on the streets & moved into my house, it’s been 10months since my oldest dog passed, thankyou Roxie for sending an angle (PB) to heal my broken heart.

What a sad but beautiful story. May your heart heal with the angel Roxie sent you. 💛 I have my little Mama Chula. I got her when she was 5 months old. She's 12 and half now and she blessed us with 3 beautiful babies. Angel, Elvis Presley and Junior. They're 4 years old on June 8th. Mama Chula has arthritis and a disc problem. She was on anti-inflammatory and gabapentin. I got her some Hemp about 2 weeks ago and she's doing better than she ever was. I still keep her other meds for when she has a cieze up. But she's doing very well. I know she's going to leave us but I just wanted her to live her best life as long as I could make it happen. Her children will help with the pain of passing but they can't take her place. Prayers for you sweet lady 🙏 ❤ 💕

Just a word to the Senior dog sanctuary. You aren't like a nursing home for old people. You offer a life, love, and meaningful connection. (and for that I am in awe of you) Nursing homes are parking lot devoid of humanity. (I've worked in them, had family members in them, etc.) It's unimaginable to me that I could give up any of my pets due to age or illness, but it's even more incomprehensible to me that a developed nation allows our less than humane care of seniors to continue.

It is so hard to lose a furry friend, it yanks your heart out. It is so humbling, here with us one minute, and the next, they crossed over. But I believe their souls are still visiting us, and we can feel this in our quiet moments, then call their name out and "pet". A moment of connection from the other side. When ready, trial adopting an old soul pet, it is a kind and noble thing to do. Life is full of "hello" and "good bye", it has been like this for as long humans have existed, and lo and behold, we are still here.

I cried myself a river throughout the video. Thinking back to my beloved Leo (yes, he had the same name, originally he was named Leon, because he came from Spain as a 8 week old puppy, but I cut the n out), who died in October 2020 because of pancreas disease. He was a mixed husky podenko breed, had thyroid disease at the age of 9 and needed medication for that every 12 hours. With him reaching the age of 10 in 2017 I got him a furry friend from a shelter from Bulgaria. This dog turned out to be epileptic and needed daily medication, too (and still does, he is around 9-10years now). Having 2 chronical ill dogs is a burden, but one I shouldered without thinking, just did it. Because they are family. I rather buy clothes in Aldi or kik instead of some fancy brands and save the money for my dogs. Happy new Year 2022!😘

I love senior animals and I cannot understand anyone who doesn't. I don't think you could do anything much worse than take your dog that you have had for years and drop it off at a shelter because it got old. That breaks my heart. However, maybe the animal was never treated very well and maybe this is their opportunity for a home that loves them no matter what. The story about Izzy is really beautiful. I bet the owner is looking down on her and he's very happy she is now a full time resident of seniors complex

As a former Director of Nursing of a skilled nursing facility….there was barely enough staffing budget to give the care we wanted to give the residents. Our patients were basically total care & wheelchair or even bed bound. The nursing staff, both nurses & nurses assistants worked the hardest that I’ve ever seen a staff to work for their patients with only two 15 min breaks & 30 min for lunch. We’d skip breaks on some days. Also, it’s hard to hire staff for these facilities because the pay, very, very, sadly, is the market minimum. We did however, have pet therapy and allowed family members bring in some family pets. It’s not as easy, manpower or budget-wise, just to say…let’s bring in senior dogs to our nursing homes. Many nursing homes are dependent on government money. A private nursing home may have the budget & be able to afford staff solely committed to caring for the dogs, planning for the activities, care, etc.of the dogs. It would be great, but with the patient demands of most facilities, and the limited funds, for now, it’s just not realistic to have dogs living at the facility.

I've adopted Siberian's my entire life and my experiences with the "unadoptable" old, emaciated and severely mistreated were among, if not the most beautiful and loving experiences with my Huskies. The elderly dogs who even "humane societies" kindest offer was euthenasia were so rewarding, words could sing never do any justice to them. Dogs that everyone had given up on after a horrible life learned to be loved, to love, to trust and learn what healthy dog food was... literally. One senior beauty that I picked up in very, very bad condition was a perfect example of how a 12 1/2 year old dog that was half the weight she should have been, literally did not know what dog food was (she had to be given brown rice with ginger for her joints and rotisserie chicken mixed in, as she'd only ever known table scraps ..if she got them that day) I slowly began mixing in high quality kibble with a raw diet I made with beef organ meat and a well researched recipe. Eventually she understood that she had her own bowl that none of the pack ever tried to challenge, her own posturepedic bed that she wanted right next to me. In far less time than one would think, Sasha was a respected and loved part of our pack of Siberian's and me, she knew she had a home and regular healthy meals that were never going away and 15 acres to roam around and experience all the things she was denied. She grew to be so confident, put all of her needed weight on as well as muscle and strengthened her joints. She played in four seasons of snow, as every Husky should with her pack and even snuck out to go visit her boyfriend, a young boxer at the neighbors. She truly lived a second act in life and experienced it all. She lived to be 17 years old and I truly believe that she, along with her health, wanted so badly to live and that's why she did. She was such a happy and always loving and grateful girl. She passed away in my arms and used every bit of energy she had to lean up and give me a kiss just before she went, which was extremely rare. She told me she appreciated her second chance and all of our love and that she was leaving this life a happy and fulfilled angel. That is one of a few stories of specifically seeking out senior dogs to give love, a good life and the love and dignity that they ALL deserve. It's the most rewarding thing in the world. They visit me in my dreams every now and then to let me know that they're where they belong and are waiting for me to get there. This was a fantastic video! 🙏💫🐾🐾❤️💙💯👈🏻

My favorite dog ever died on his 11th birthday. Having dealt with every disease, deformity, and weird condition with this dog, him being taken out by a stroke was even more heartbreaking. The other two members of his pack lived to be 16. I got them all as tiny puppies. The next group included a Yellow Lab who was horribly abused before I took her on. I had her for 8 months before she decided she lived here. The second was a Golden Retriever/Chow mix. He was still a baby when I brought Honey home. He, unfortunately, died at 14 from kidney failure. Honey was so heartbroken, she died 5 weeks to the day later. She was 18. I know I had almost all of mine for a long time, but it's never long enough.

Thank you for your kindness to senior dogs. My fur baby Piper, 15 years 5 months old went to dog heaven July 15th cradled in my arms. Due to Covid-19, I interviewed five vets until I found one that would allow me to hold her. 😭Even with her IV, when Piper saw me bawling my eyes out-she started to lick my tears… such bond and love I can’t find in a human being…

I have a very deep respect for the work you all do to ensure happy, healthy, and loving final years for these elderly dogs. I cannot imagine giving a dog who has been with you for most of its life to the pound. They give such unconditional love, and ask so little in return, and they deserve so much better in their twilight years. Those who take in elderly dogs, knowing they have a limited time left give the dog a gift that is rewarded by the quality of those months and years shared. Your photography catches the nature of each dog…and their people beautifully. I believe these dogs extend the lives of elderly or ill owners, just as the owners extend the dog’s lives simply by loving and caring for them. There is nothing so powerful in this world than unconditional love…and no one does that better than a mature dog.🖤🇨🇦

It was so sad that my last dog was going down hill right along with me. I cried because I couldn't take him for the slow walks he wanted and deserved. He was my companion as I went up the mountain of doom...the hill that my severely aged stubborn parents lived. He went with me to charm them and to comfort me. There was a reason I named him Samwize Gamgee, I knew what was ahead. Cancer surgeries for him , personal care for parents who refused "outside " help. It took its tole but the job was my last gift to my parents and then there was just SAMWIZE AND ME. Then I wound up in ICU and hospitalized for 8 days and when I returned he came to me and rested his body next to me.. Samwize remained here for several months as I said good by...I will always grieve his brave and loyal companionship.

I love this dogumentary and want to mention that I had 4 dogs in my life and never felt like they are too old to be with me. I have seen 2 of them pass and I was an emotional wreck. One is 13 years old now and we call him an old happy man. Like one person said in this video, Cliff comes by for his ear scratches and still throws me his tennis ball for some play time, daily. My youngest dog is 4 years old and we both will grow old together. There is no room in my brain to understand people that think dogs would be disposable. They are true and important companions throughout any stages of our lives. In Izzy’s terms, maybe even passed our lives…

I adopted 3 older dog and a cat named Eve who was 20. She was born on Christmas Eve. And she died on Christmas eve. 21 years old. I absolutely adored her. I held her and sang to her and she later died that night. I did the same with Niña. She was probably 6 or 7. And lived to be 11 or 12. She died also peaceful in her sleep. And a miracle happened and she had a baby! Our Beautiful Bella!

I was watching bits of this again. I can't get over the way Lucy smiles. It's beautiful. So are all the others but there is something to that dog. She has an almost angelic presence. That's from looking at her through a camera. I imagine in real life shes something else. As for the neighbours. What a bunch of selfish idiots. Tell you what let's hope when they're old and nobody wants them they get treated better than they treated you. I doubt it though. Karma can be a beetch.

Words don't seem enough to Express the joy that this dogumentary brings. I wish the whole world could see it. My best friend is Oskar. He is an 11, nearly 12, year old black and tan dachshund. Nearly 3 years ago Oskar developed diabetes, it was totally my fault, but not out of cruelty but out of misguided love. Oskar and I have shared everything since he came into my life a a tiny little 9 week old puppy. I am disabled due to a few health conditions, chief among them is a tumor in my head and neck. Oskar was the companion I needed. So my vet said that many people euthanized diabetic dogs, as the cost of insulin, syringes etc was expensive. I was aghast at that thought. My response was how do we make him better or at least stable so he can enjoy whatever time he naturally has left. Oskar went on a weight management program, I even make his diabetic friendly wet food topper. And we got his weight down to within normal parameters for his breed. Then one Friday I noticed he couldn't see out of his right eye, as I went to give him one of his home made diabetics dog treats ( learned that he's perfectly fine with them, it's not what he gets, but that I'm sharing it with him, I wish I had learned that earlier) . I called my vet immediately and we set up an appointment for Monday. By Monday, Oskar was blind in both eyes. I was devastated, and Oskar was very scared. Who wouldn't be right. I live in very rural Maine, the nearest veterinary opthomalagist is in Massachusetts, and simply put the cost of surgery was not possible even if he ended up being a viable candidate. So the learning curve started again. His diabetes was under control, but now it was time for both of us to learn how we could manage this blindness. It was a long process, but he went from being this scared little Weiner dog, who stayed in the bed with his toys, only came down to eat, drink and go outside to potty, and that meant a very short leash so he was never more than 2 feet away from me, to now he loves going to my friends house because he and his neighbor have a huge, safe back yard he can explore with his nose. He even plays a dog version of blind man's bluff with the neighbors 6 month old havanese pupper. It just takes love and patience. He has mapped every inch of our apartment, and he has his territory out front of the apartment which he explores and Mark's every day. I walk beside him, never more than a few feet away, and I constantly remind him in still there, but he leads the way. If a strange sound catches his ear, he barks to warn me and his tail goes up, the hair on his back stands up, his nose is up and sniffing a mile a minute. But he is my same old Oskar, fearless , funny, and never has met a person he doesn't like. Sorry I've rambled on forever. But I just had to share his story. Thank you for making such a wonderful video, and may all the gods bless the amazing people who care for our senior puppers. I hope people see this and learn that it's still the same dog you've had for all those years before and just like we do as we get older, they are moving into their next phase of life. Don't give up on them, afterall they haven't given up on you.

Seeing all these people with their beloved, elderly dogs (people like I am), it is hard to understand that there are also people in this world, that dumped their old dogs for younger ones. Because it is inconvenient to handle an older dog. Visit the vet more often, reduce your speed due to their energy levels, maybe giving dayly medication bothers them or the way the dogs may get incontinence due to their age. And instead of giving these old dogs the Appreciation they deserve, these people throw them out. That is what makes my blood boil.😠😠
