Tesla Terafactory Texas Update

Welcome back guys, it’s Randy! Today’s footage shows the latest updates happening at the site. We see new concrete being poured, some new bridge cranes that I overlooked in yesterday’s video, and most noticeably, great progress with all of the drainage-related work as they are building miniature megastructure right before our eyes! As a quick note, I did fly over the eastern side of the property but there wasn’t anything discernible observed, so I’m just leaving that footage out.
Here are today’s key takeaways:
- The GigaPress area shows a large new excavation is underway in the area between the road and angled corner.
- The BIW area shows the sections we saw yesterday being prepped for concrete are in fact having concrete poured today in the part that had rebar work completed. We can see that the rebar work has started in the next section and it looks like the drainage in front of the loading bay doors has been fully prepped and formed for concrete too.
- The East detention pond looks to have all of the holes in the concrete wall finished and now efforts to finish applying the final grade to the fill soil is what’s taking place.
- The east side of the Stamping area has a lot of orange colored parts and pieces of equipment and they are definitely parts to additional bridge cranes, albeit they are much smaller than all of the others we’ve seen delivered to the site and noticeably are not red with Tesla branding.
- The southern gap north end shows all phases of the roof covering process in progress from the applying the steel decking to the final application of the waterproof membrane. The south end shows that once they finish placing the beams on the right side of the structure in progress, one more section remains to erect and then we could see the final topping off ceremony in the next couple of days!
- The south detention pond continues to show tangible daily changes and we can see the massive wall forms still being added as the workers continue to prepare for concrete to be poured on this end of it. The massive drainage vault box shows major work taking place inside of it and on the outside, lots of work being done to properly bury the drainage pipes connecting to the box.
- On the GA west-facing side, we can see that the Model Y that is suspended from the ceiling inside of the factory has in fact been covered for the time being.

PSC Crane & RIgging is crane services company. So hired bridged cranes. Not Tesla owned. So Tesla or sub contractor must have hired them to move some equipment. PSC's top listed service is "Press Installation & Relocation". Those bridge cranes are in their photo showing "Press Installation & Relocation".

Great to see you out with the drone again Randy! I'm fairly sure the parts in the yard at :1:20 are all temporary, it's a modular load lifting system for moving and placing industrial machinery. Tony, you are correct, this is two hydraulic gantry cranes on a short track. 1:20 They will probably be used to unload a very heavy shipment. The load will be secured to the top cross beams and the four numbered jacks will extend to raise the load and allow the truck to drive out. The four jacks probably have a lifting capability of about 20' vertical

Thanks for the video today Randy. The area between the north parking lot and the entry road 19:40 will probably be landscaped and add to the overall appearance. But it also has another function, the lower area in the middle of the berm directs water runoff to the drain located near the center of the picture, right of the car, protecting the parking lot.

Anyway, putting a tree right next to a building is problematic: the branches hit the building, storms break them off, roots go places you don't want them too. @@LinasVepstas I think we can agree that the most important asset Tesla has is its workers. Without workers the company wouldn't exist. Landscaping, just like windows, makes the place a better place to work at. There is no engineering reason that prevents landscaping near the building. It just requires landscape maintenance. It is a billion dollar factory! They can afford landscaping. Anyway, that is my opinion.

David and Elton, how is your fluid dynamics? My engineering gut-feeling tells me that a zig-zag weir is not effective. My reasoning goes like this: at t=0, the water is flush with all the weirs. At t+0, the water starts to rise further. The water then encounters an effective straight weir which is the width of the box, because the space between the zig-zag is already filled with water. The total flow that goes into the river (over the zigzag weir) is then the extra height that the incoming water pushes above weir height (delta h) times the width of the splitter box (w). And not delta h times the total length of the weir. I hope Tesla engineers read this and let us know..

@@hardernl8893 As the level of the water reaches the top of the weir it flows over the entire length of the weir, The only effect of folding would be if the folds were so narrow as to prevent free flowing into the fingers. Look at it this way, some of the water overflows straight ahead as you suggested, but some also flows to the left and some to the right using the total length of the weir. With the long weir the velocity over the weir is reduced and accuracy increased, also much easier to keep it level.

@@hardernl8893 Weir design. I had trouble visualising how it would work. Decided to make a model, and while I was thinking about how to do that I had this light bulb moment where I imagined a bunch of cups in a kitchen sink. As the sink fills up and water begins to flow into the cups the total volume flowing into the cups depends on the number of cups. Imagine only 1 cup in the sink versus 6 cups. Same effect with a longer weir wall. I can’t not understand it now, but I couldn’t grasp it at first. Ultimately the flow to the river is restricted by the outlet drain diameter regardless of weir design.

If I were Elon, I would install a huge Battery storage facility near the substation as soon as possible. Maybe Elon will, as he as already tweeted that Tesla will provide electricty this winter in case power goes out again like last winter..... Although Tesla has already installed a small megapack station an hour or two away. The crane that they are building beside the stamping facility looks like it is for lifting a large quantity of heavy stuff up to the stamping roof. Maybe Elon has also decided to put solar panels here first as the roof protusions are at a minimum and the concrete has cured long enough. A movable crane constantly lifting the heavy panels might damage the newly poured roadbed which would explain the new crane platform.

I'm quite sure there will be backup generators at the factory to provide power to critical loads. Generators are the most reliable, cost-effective source of backup power. I have a large broadcast customer that has four 1050 KW gen sets feeding two true UPS systems which are also fed by two different power substations. They only need two but four makes damn sure.
