Tesla Terafactory Texas Update

Welcome back guys, it’s Randy! Today’s footage shows many of the expected updates to the exterior and immediate surrounding areas of the building, in addition to some new deliveries. The weather and wind conditions were excellent today, so I could get some better looks at the things that we see without having to worry about battery range. Let’s dive right into it!
Here are today’s key takeaways:
- The North End shows the closing up of this open section of the building we suspected would happen after seeing the crane and wall panels in position yesterday has in fact begun.
- The BCP building shows some new deliveries being unloaded and moved to the upper level. I’m not sure if these are actually more electrical cabinets or actual equipment or modules used in the battery cell production process. Let me know what you guys think in the comments below.
- The GigaPress area shows work being done to cover the conduit and fill around the boxes in the last remaining section that needs concrete, so hopefully we’ll be seeing concrete here in the next day or two if they’ve finished all of the electrical work involved.
- Shout out to Elton Ray in the comments for some great explanation of what is likely to be happening with the Worker Lot drainage system pipes. Here we see the current status of what’s been installed, and the others nearby. Elton stated that at the far north end of this lot next to Tesla Road, there is actually another pipe in position that these will extend to and that should finish up the system. I’ll be sure to use another battery and get a look at that end the next time I go out.
- The Stamping area still shows the PSC crane crew working to move the heavy equipment. We pretty much see large items covered with this green tarp each day we come out, but what I’ve noticed is that the number of what look to be discarded steel “pallets” or frames that the equipment was originally on seem to be growing in that pile between the blue lift and power transmission tower, so that could give us an idea as to the number of large pieces they are actually moving into this section.
- The south end shows that the application of the roof membrane layers is still in progress and it looks like they have some, but not all layers down in the remaining area that approaches the edge.
- The south detention pond still shows work backfilling all of the buried drainage system sections, as well as dug out areas of the original shape of the excavated pond taking place.
- Lastly, we get a quick look at the progress of the GA building window installation and see that the bottom row has almost reached the end of the building where the angled corner is.

The heavy tarpaulin covered items by the stamping area are probably stamping dies for all the different panels that go to make car bodies. Such as sides, hood, trunk, doors, fenders, etc and most large panels have an inner and outer pressed panel welded together. Each finished panel probably needs about 4 separate dies each consisting of a lower and upper die. These dies are loaded into the multi stage press, mostly automatically nowadays for high volume manufacturers, from one side of the press whilst the dies that have finished their production run automatically move out of the opposite of the press. Once one set of dies for a particular panel have finished their production run they will go to the tool room for cleaning and maintenance so they are ready for their next required production run. Each die can weigh up to 50 tons.

Things are definitely coming together. My main concern has always been making the building weather tight so production can begin. But perhaps this is misguided for such a large project. A few leaks, a few openings here and there doesn’t seem to be a problem when you have so much under cover. I was concerned many months ago when they started bringing robots in. Watching the videos I guess I’ve learned something about huge building construction and sequencing. Terrafactory: Time to start spitting those Model Ys out !

If you could get a closeup of the activity on the south east corner of the building, they have set up a tent area. Joe Justice said that is how agile manufacturing works. Set up a tent and design what you need from there. I noticed they staged 2 concrete pumpers there but that could be a coincidence. AS fast as they seem to be moving on the dirt work, we won't have to wait too long to find out. Also would love to see some after dark shots through the windows again.

Thanks for the flight today Randy, At 1:49 the two green tarped items under the gantries appear to be bases for a stamping press and the two items in the near field are the draw works that will be placed on the bases. It appears that they are assembling the second transfer press line. Near the base of the tower are more frames that were removed from other presses. The original line has five presses and this one could be similar. This is the start of the second assembly line to produce ---- what ?

  • @acmefixer1

    @acmefixer1

The 2nd line of stamping presses does not seem to be for the Cybertruck because the CT bodies are much heavier sheet metal and would require larger presses. The throughput of one Gigafactory is a car every 90 seconds on each of two lines so I assume they would need the stamping presses for the full production of the model Y.

  • @eltonray2934

@@acmefixer1 Acme, The stainless 304L cold rolled .118" thick cannot be formed in a stamping press. The stainless only covers the outside of the cyber truck. The interior passenger cabin, door frames, bulkheads, glass mounting surfaces and other parts have compound bends and will be pressed of another metal, not stainless, before connection to the die cast front and rear. The stainless will be shaped only in straight lines or as Elon says, origami to form the exoskeleton. I do not know if this stamping line is for the truck. Actually a stamping lines production only has to do with the dies and are changed for the production requirements. Stamped parts are usually produced ahead and stored to feed BIW.

They recently published government paperwork saying that the expected completion date such that they will get a certificate of occupancy which will allow normal production is December 31. That would make sense for certain tax purposes. So i expect them to be officially open for business on the 1st of January. That matches up with the Tax year.

I reckon they will try to have transporters loading as quickly as possible once vehicles come out the factory door. Elon's recent email about reducing costs, minimising staging and vehicle movements saves money, it also gets the vehicle to the customer more quickly and therefore reduces the number of vehicles 'in transit' at any one time. This is also a working captial advantage for Tesla. Ford, GM, etc. have huge numbers of vehicles on lots, unsold, that costs them, increases market risk, discounting, incentives. Also I guess the volumes will be ramping from a low level, it will be many months before big volumes. It looks like the drainage is progressing well in the main carpark to the east. Once the area to the south of the building and the southern pond is levelled it can be prepared as a contractors zone for the southern gap. Then the main carpark to the east can be paved and there'll be clean roads from the factory door.

Of course they could have a dyno inside to check performance. If I was going to build a permanent track I would build it near the river in the flood plain, area cannot be used for buildings without a lot of fill. Good for test track and ecological paradise though. Of course if you are serious you could drive south a few miles to The Circuit of the Americas.
