Tesla Coil - Initial Testing

Ғылым және технология

These are my first few tests with my Spark Gap Tesla Coil (unmodified NST). It runs off of a 12kV 60mA neon sign transformer, and has only reached a measly 18" max arc length.
This video is late due to being banned from turning it on by my parents until I got a line filter. I managed to destroy a very expensive internet modem.
Improvements are planned for the future. I hope to get some commercially produced capacitors, and maybe make an asynchronous rotary spark gap. I'm nearly finished with modifying the neon sign transformer; I hope to double the amount of current, and then submerge it in oil to protect it.

Wow does this bring back memories. When my son was about your age, we built a coil _very_ similar to this. But we used a 6-bottles-of- beer capacitor and a double spark gap. We did get 22 inch sparks. And we got a glow from a florescent tube all around the back yard. But boy was it scary. The gap was _really_ loud. When beer bottles started breaking, we quit. This was for a high school science fair project that was also a physics course grade. The teacher offered my son an A+ if he would agree _not_ to try running the coil at school. :-)

Nice start on the coil. I've made a few coils myself and posted some video of them. You can try adjusting the tap on your primary flat spiral coil (when there is no power and the coil is completely unplugged from the wall for safety) to try and fine tune the resonance between the primary LC and secondary LC. Did you calculate the resonant frequencies for each?

TechnoWizard I have. I've actually improved this coil drastically, it's now producing 31" arcs. I'll post a vid as soon as I have time to get more footage.

Basement Engineer also to tune it you can use a induction motor powered rotary spark gap and use a scariac/variac to adjust the speed, I personally would use a scariac because it's very cheap to make, just saltwater and electrodes

I have bought 3 nst. all 3 are 9kv at 30ma I know how and will phase them together well atleast 2 at first...but this will only increase the ma to 90 ( 60ma with 2 ) and it will not increase the volts overall or therefore the arc length....just the power and heat or thickness of the arc? or does phasing them in parallel increases the volts and ma???

Only amperage! Voltage same. Can't wire nst. s in series for obvious reasons, but if you could, it would increase the voltage.

you should look into making tesla energy lights they are about $5000 new but im sure you could make them for a lot cheaper
