The finalized results for the tesla coil project.
This project began last year (2015) after realizing that Tesla Coils (at least the spark gap variety) are not incredibly complicated things to build. After researching off and on for a period of 6 months, I finally decided to spend the money and get materials. At the end of it all, I've put $175 and 100's of hours into this project. But it was worth it!
I'm going to the maker faire this coming spring in Salt Lake City, and it would be great to meet some of you. It's scheduled for April 15, 2017.
Some technical specifications for those who care to know:
-2 modified 12,000v 30mA neon sign transformers (each one now outputs 60mA or more)
-5.5" dia pvc pipe, 28" of windings
-Little more than 1/4 mile of 23 gauge wire, enamel coated
-12 bottle capacitors, with a total capacitance of 15nF
-50 ft of 1.4" copper tubing
-theoretical max discharge voltage = 320,000 volts
-peak primary current = 119A
-peak mains power amperage = 20A
-max arc length to date = 34"
