How to Unpot and Repair a Neon Sign Transformer - SGTC

Ғылым және технология

This video is intended for those who have broken, damaged, or underpowered neon sign transformers, and want to do something about it. I am not responsible for any damage you inflict on yourself or your property.
Higher powered NST's are certainly not for lighting neon tubes anymore, but for powering tesla coils and other high voltage projects. This is a messy and time-consuming process, so be aware.
I have taken apart Franceformers and an Acme Electric NST in this video. By the time I'm done, they have twice the amount of power they started with. This is dangerous.
Please feel free to ask questions about the process or results. I want to help people with their coils.

That crinkly translucent paper is mica sheet paper. Used for insulation.

I have been in the neon business for 35 years. What you are handling is EXTREEMELY DANGEROUS!!!!!! That black stuff Is PCB TAR!!! VERY DANGEROUS!!!

Well, it’s pcb’s only if the transformer was manufactured before 1977 (canada) or 1979 (usa)

From my experience from removing the shunts out of an MOT I had, the primary still moved around, so for the best and highest possible current output while still maintaining perfect insulation, put the secondaries as close against to the primaries as possible while still maintaining good isolation by use of the insulation you have.

hey i need to replace a transformer , can you tell me what does the kv rating matter. i see 3, 6,10kv for sale ?

I got my own NSTs to play with lol but I don't want to change them by removing the shunts. But that's pretty interesting that you got the shunts out without damaging any part of it. I hope we can talk soon!

Bobby M. The fit was pretty tight due to the design of the transformer cores, so vibration and movement of the coils was minimal. As they are right now (no shunts), these things get noticeably warm within 5 minutes of use. I don't dare move the secondaries any closer as they could cause more heating, and/or an arc that would be impossible to insulate.

no, there will still be a short somewhere in the coil(s). that will not help.

Pretty slick idea on more power budget friendly. Could always go 100% balls deep with multiple MOT's. Just be so careful dude you are at lethal levels now only gets more lethal from here. Peace
