Spark Gap Tesla Coil parts & old/dodgy things (quick unedited video)

Ғылым және технология

I'm looking for components for my big Spark Gap Tesla Coil (SGTC) and talking about them. Capacitor bank, also called a Multi Mini Capacitor (MMC), Microwave oven transformers (MOTs), primary and secondary winding, current limiting inductors and a top-load. I also show some old, dodgy or interesting things, like my Marx generator, my old DIY x-ray machine and analog x-ray cassettes with amplifying screens, a book from 1886, some soviet CRTs and clocks, Zenit cameras, a mercury blood pressure meter, dodgy wall socket above a bathtub, dodgy DIY fluorescent fixtures, antique thermometers, a cheap Chinese stun gun... At the end of the video I wanted to say that I've lost a spark gap I've made for a tesla coil, but as always, I ran out of memory :).

You haven't communism back in time yes? :D You can get these things everywhere. On our re-sell websites like sbazar.cz or bazos.cz I personally collect old Czechoslovak vacuum tube radios and I can get most of them from 20-40 euros and some rare from 50-120 euros. We were from 30's to 70's one of the biggest manofacturers of vacuum tubes, so you can today get them from 0.50E to 10E for normal types and 10-20 for rare types :D

That really reminds my of the cellar of my grandpa! He was really hording everything he could get his fingers on! He was also busy in electronics and built an early radio reciever without external power, just with a germanium (?) diode, capicitor, antenna and earth and maybe coil or some other components like transistor. As a child i was very impressed it worked without electricity - just by the antenna! Seems you need a wife to take care of your home and your safety :-)

When I was a boy in England in the 1950s, shoe shops used to have X-ray machines that showed you your feet inside shoes. That way parents could check that their children’s shoes had enough growing space before buying them. You stood with your shod feet inside the bottom of the X-ray machine and looked into viewing facility at the top to see an X-ray view of your feet in the shoes you wanted to buy. I enjoyed playing on those devices aged 5 or so.

Same here with my mountains ⛰ and mountains 🏔 of electronics gear!!!! Oh but I don’t have a box of 2 Watt Soviet Russian Resistors that are as old as I am 😉!!! My wife keeps telling me that I have way too much stuff, I have to agree with her, especially when I can’t get to my desk or dining room table because it’s buried under a huge pile of boxes full of electronics and components. Everything from Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pie, PC & Laptop parts, capacitors, resistors, transistors, mosfets, transformers, magnetrons, Tesla coils and a bunch of other random stuff. So this video was like a tour of my house 🏠 🤓!!!

Hey, it's electrical safety violations galore! Had fun watching though. The X-ray machine is indeed dodgy and I wouldn't dare to plug it in, and the old book is a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. I like these Soviet scope CRTs. Nice to see the parts of your wiring - how old are they? Looks '80s to me; I'd be pretty surprised to see circuit breakers resembling DIN rail mounted ones like in the '90s and later. From my Polish experience, fuses or threaded circuit breakers (fuse replacement) were used here; I wonder how Czechoslovakia did it. As for the socket in the bathroom... brrrr! The minimum distance here is 60cm or 1.20m for a shower with no basin. We still use these stupid sockets with the grounding prong, meh. Stupid because a device that doesn't require grounding (no hole in the plug) can't be plugged to the pronged socket, and a device that requires grounding can be plugged anywhere, pronged or not. I like those vintage cables. They were THE real deal, none of that copper coated aluminum rubbish. Thermometers, you've got me there... Things of beauty, joy for ever. I like the Zenit cameras, they were sturdy and reliable, though I never had one. Some very old amplifier? Intriguing. Pity the video was so abruptly ended.

Hello Mr. DGWild. I have the same problem. I allways think that that old part will give me some componentes for projects in future, so i keep all the junk and dismantle it. But what happens in reality is that the things wait there for years, collecting dust. I allways think that I should move on to a new chapter in my life where i realise that a very complex device it is cheap nowadays with greater effiency and almost disposable. I am 42 and after all our future is now. This is a question that will never be solved in my life. I think I will keep collecting and if get to old man then I will put all the garbage in the container to clear the house for my descendents.

Many years ago I had a friend who enthusiastically experimented with an old x-ray tube in his doggy-flat (he got it from the junk room of a nearby hospital). Sweet Peter often told us about the fascinating bone structure of his forearms of which he took "pictures". He always assured us to handle it very carefully and to avoid all risks as far as possible (if you knew him, you knew what that ment) After I moved to another city, we lost contact and I never heard from him again. From a certain point, he was also considered to be “missing” for his former circle of acquaintances and no one has heard from him ever again. It is to be feared that he left us with a bright, shining smile ./
